Jobs … Coming from Wind ~ a repost

Tell Congress: Support pregnant workers … a repost

by Emily J. Martin

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching — but for some moms, celebrating is the last thing on their minds.

Because Congress has failed to act, some pregnant women might be spending this holiday facing an impossible choice between risking their health and risking their family’s economic security.

Tell Your Members of Congress
to Support Pregnant Workers

No mom-to-be should be forced to choose between risking her health and risking her family’s economic security this Mother’s Day. Write to your Members of Congress now.

Lots of pregnant women don’t need any changes on the job, but some do, and for them the stakes are high. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is commonsense legislation that would require employers to make reasonable accommodations when workers have a medical need for them because of pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions — just as employers are already required to do for people with disabilities.

Over the next several weeks, we’re turning the pressure up to raise awareness and take action in support of pregnant workers. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act will be re-introduced in Congress soon. But to give it a strong start, we need to make sure we have as many co-sponsors on the bill as possible.

It’s time we turn it up a notch and push for what moms really need. Please take a minute to honor the mothers in your life by supporting the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.

Thanks for all that you do.

Sincerely,
Emily J. Martin

Defending the Amazon is a daily battle

Defending the Amazon is a daily battle. It takes the deepest commitment and fierce dedication from each and every one of us. Despite the construction of the monstrous Belo Monte Dam, the communities of the Xingu have not given up, and neither have we. As a result, the final operating license was recently denied by the Brazilian environmental agency IBAMA and the flooding of Altamira was halted!

That victory was possible because we all worked together in solidarity and refused to surrender to destructive forces in Brazil. Communities on the front lines are doing their part, and we need you to do yours. That means both action to generate pressure and funds to make the work possible.

Donate today with pride and know that you’re helping to stop a grave threat to the indigenous communities of the Xingu River and to our global climate.

Belo Monte is just the beginning. More than 60 large dams are planned for the Brazilian Amazon. The challenges will only get bigger, and we’ll continue to stand with our partners on the Xingu while ramping up our support for the Munduruku struggle to defend their lands and the Tapajos River from another destructive mega-dam.

Please support the fight to stop Belo Monte and other Amazon dams so that we may build upon this recent victory for justice in Brazil!

For the people of the Xingu and the Tapajos,

skin care products …. how about sleep water and good food

shoesandblackgirl

Have you been getting digital product ads for Holiday events that are months away. I have and while I do love and buy products from certain sites, others are annoying offensive and you have to wonder how the FDA gave them the greenlight. Anyway, the ads in both print and digital have been focusing on women’s looks … how awful or our sagging skin or wrinkles … lest we talk about those aging spots oh and don’t stop there why not just lighten brighten and whiten your skin to make yourself look younger. Say what? I have admitted to having had a tough time with my skin when I was in my 20’s. I did not have acne in high school but moving to the city and indulging in food I had no idea existed … probably full of Tran’s fat and the environment forced me into doing time under the lights. I had allergy issues eczema and so on but the dermatologist was fantabulous. I did what I was told which is the most important thing during those years so my skin recovered, but the issues of wrinkles, lines and saggy parts of the face actually seem to be less when you go to sleep at a reasonable and consistent hour and to-be-honest water has and will always be our body’s savior. I have to admit, 2015 has been stressful, the heat, and working odd hours has a tendency to bring out wrinkling sagging in the neck area while the face is fine right now.  I look at those commercials, scream then wonder if I should finally break down buy the anti-aging stuff.  I actually decided to product test anti-aging wrinkle reducers’ in 2013 and did not feel the product I used made a difference.  If you just test my advice for a month in 2013 let me know if you saw a big difference; by going to sleep earlier than usual, drink 2 liters of water, and eat right you will definitely see positive changes. I love coffee tea and prefer water mixed unless it’s seriously hot or cold then I will drink what I call “naked water” … they say try to drink half your body weight though getting advice from your friendly doc or nurse is a better suggestion.   I try to drink 2 liters of liquids a day…. I do drink naked hot water. I stand by my statement in 2013.  I also went back to using coconut oil, moisturizer/creams with high SPF, vitamin C, E and B5 least we talk about adding more fan time

Too many Black families … a repost

It’s a time of celebration and joy, but every year there are too many Black families who have empty seats around their holiday dinners.

Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Tanesha Anderson, John Crawford, and many, many more.

But there’s a vibrant movement on the streets demanding that our country value and protect Black lives, and it’s forcing many Americans — particularly our elected officials — to wake up to the realities of everyday violence against Black people.

We’re in the middle of a transformative moment, and ColorOfChange has bold plans for 2015.

We are going to:

  1. Strengthen the police accountability work we’ve spear-headed throughout 2014. From ensuring Darren Wilson, Daniel Pantaleo, and other police officers are held fully accountable, to securing nationwide structural reforms addressing discriminatory police violence, there’s a lot to be done.
  2. Lift up the voices of our 1 million members to fight back against the new right-wing Congress. The Republicans who now control both houses are determined to pass legislation that will put our communities in harms way. And we’re determined to hold them accountable.
  3. Continue to combat toxic media representations of Black folks and the movements for justice springing up everywhere.
  4. Keep our fingers on the country’s pulse, ready to jump on rapid response moments and influence the national dialogue.

…and there’s a lot more in the pipeline.

Make a $1 holiday donation today to strengthen ColorOfChange’s civil rights campaigns this coming year. (Or give whatever you can.)

Every donation you make, every dollar you give, makes a BIG difference. Our small staff will stretch it out and ensure it has a real impact in 2015.

Thanks and peace,

–Rashad, Arisha, Matt, Bhavik, and the ColorOfChange team
