a message from Nancy Pelsosi FW: Barack Obama’s Urgent Message

On Wednesday, President Obama issued an urgent call to action for Democratic supporters nationwide: $1 million in grassroots dollars before Thursday’s final and most important quarterly reporting deadline. The amount of money we have in the bank as of midnight on the 30th will be used to judge our chances of winning tight races and retaining our Majority. This is also one of the last times to effectively expand advertising time in districts.

There has never been a more critical time to give. If we don’t want to see what we have worked so hard for come undone, we must stand united. Time is running out and I need your support now more than ever. Please contribute $5, $10 or more today and our matching program will be an unprecedented triple match by a group of committed Democrats.

Thank you as always for standing with us.

Friend —

In the coming weeks, Americans will make a critical choice. Do we continue moving our country forward? Or do we bring back the very same ideas that devastated the middle class and resulted in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression?

There is no doubt that Democrats can retain our Majority in the House of Representatives in the same way that we won in 2008 — by going block by block, house by house, voter by voter.

September 30th marks the final FEC quarterly fundraising deadline of this election, making this the most important deadline we have ever faced. Your support by Midnight on September 30th will decide how strong our voter contact team is, how far they can extend their reach, and how many Democratic voters they can get to the polls.

Contribute before the crucial Midnight September 30th FEC deadline to fund our get-out-the-vote effort and ensure that I keep my great Democratic Partners in the House. Your gift today will be matched by a group of generous Democrats.

Keep the House Blue

The challenges we face as a nation are too great to go back to the same old Republican ideas that got us into this mess in the first place. We simply cannot give the keys to the car back to the very same folks whose ideas led to the worst economy since the 1930s.

Since taking office, I have been fortunate to have extraordinary partners in the House like Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues who have fought to move our country in a New Direction. They have put our recovery on track, fought Republican attempts to privatize Social Security, and heroically taken on the powerful special interests. Now they need your help.

When my own campaign for this office began, we weren’t given much of a chance by the pollsters or the pundits. You proved them wrong through your belief that 2008 had to be different. Now I need you to do it again for my great Democratic allies in the House.

We simply cannot afford to spend the next two years wishing we had done more in this final push to keep the House in Democratic hands.

This is our moment to retain a Democratic House so we can continue working to create millions of jobs, strengthen our middle class, and make this economy work for every American.

Thank you.

Barack Obama

We must act fast!

CARE Action Network

On September 20, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Water for the World Act, which would enable the United States, to help provide 100 million people around the world access to sustainable – and lifesaving – water and sanitation services.

Now, this landmark bill is in the House of Representatives, but time is running out to pass it. Right now, the House is rushing to complete their work before recessing in October.

Simply put: your help is needed to bring the bill to a vote.

Access to safe water and sanitation lies at the root of achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. If we do not achieve the goal of halving the number of people living without access to safe water and sanitation, we will not achieve many of the other targets, such as establishing universal primary education, eradicating hunger or reducing child mortality.

For women and girls in less developed countries, water and sanitation are critical issues. All across the world, women and girls walk miles carrying back-breaking loads of water for their families. School girls are often doubly-affected. They miss school in order to gather water. And girls are less likely to attend school when the school is lacking clean water and proper sanitation and hygiene facilities. But it doesn’t have to be this way. A study carried out by CARE and Emory University in western Kenya found that access to these vital resources reduced school absenteeism in girls by 37 percent.

For new mothers, access to safe water is critical as well. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, diarrheal disease caused by lack of access to safe water and proper sanitation is the leading killer of children under 5 years old. But we know when women can access safe water and sanitation facilities, they have healthier families and more time to devote to education and business endeavors. In essence, women become more productive members of society, helping lift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty for good.

We must act fast to ensure that the Water for the World Act is voted on in the House before the fall recess.

The time for the United States to make real progress on this critical health issue is now! Please let your representatives hear that you expect them to take action to save the lives – and protect the dignity – of millions of the world’s poorest people.

Thank you!

When a caterpillar grows up, it becomes a beautiful butterfly. When curious kid David Inouye grew up, he became an ecologist. It’s the kind of metamorphosis our world could use more of.

Now, David channels all of his curiosity into the study of bees, butterflies, and wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains. For the past 40 years, David has returned to the same piece of land, tracking its changes. And over time, David has found substantial and disturbing evidence that the world is warming like never before. That kind of curiosity deserves our support.

Yet, it seems like no one’s listening. Corporations that deny global warming for the sake of their own financial interests are taking over the airways, and convincing the public that nothing is wrong. They are killing the curiosity, and thus, squelching the truth.

We need your help to make David’s voice heard. Can you make a donation now to help us spread the truth about global warming?

It’s hard to believe that, with all of the progress science has made possible, people still doubt its truthfulness. But they do. According to a recent study, the wildflower meadows David loves so much will likely be entirely displaced by sagebrush in just 50 years if current rates of warming continue unchecked.

Please support the Union of Concerned Scientists in our efforts to bring sound science to the public and spread the curiosity and the truth about global warming. Your donation allows us to be an independent voice for policy change and to continue developing science-based solutions to crucial environmental, health, and security issues.

Together we can help save the bees and wildflowers and protect all of this planet’s wondrous curiosities.

Sign the Pledge

Do you hate pap smears, but LIKE the idea that they are now free?

Join the club.

Today is the six-month anniversary of the new health care law and the day when a number of important consumer protections go into effect. Insurance companies can no longer drop you when you become sick or deny health coverage to children with pre-existing conditions. Also, when you enroll in a new health plan, you no longer have co-pays for preventative health care services. And the law provides even more relief to women, like making it illegal to charge them more than men for insurance. These are some of the improvements that women and their families can enjoy because of the new health care law.

In honor of these new provisions coming into effect, the National Women’s Law Center is launching a campaign to help spread the word about how the new health care law works for women. Digital public education ads will appear on websites such as Huffington Post, Facebook and Politico, and based on Facebook’s “LIKE” function, the campaign allows you to “LIKE” the improvements the health care law makes in your life and the lives of those you love.

Join the campaign! Take the Sharing is Health Caring pledge to get informed about the new health care improvements, share the campaign with your friends and family, and make sure that you know where your candidates stand when you vote in the November 2nd election.

You’ve fought hard with us to pass this law and today we can celebrate — perhaps with a free mammogram or pap smear? Or how about just LIKING that it’s free and taking our pledge today?

You can also find out exactly what goes into effect today by checking out our new fact sheet.

Lindi, Kassidy, Ashley, Jay and Matt

Let’s face it; this election is going to be close.

It’s more important than ever that we defend our progressive leaders already in Congress and continue to lead the charge to pick up open seats and challenge vulnerable Republicans.

DFA has already raised over $500,000 for progressives candidates, made over 50,000 calls to voters in targeted districts, and delivered thousands of boots-on-the-ground volunteer hours focused on working to win.

Now, we’re stepping it up another notch.

Meet Lindi, Kassidy, Ashley, Jay, and Matt — our first five trained Dean Corps staffers already on the ground on some of the tightest, most important races across the country. They’re training and recruiting volunteers, organizing events and phonebanks, and contacting voters and making a difference for DFA endorsed candidates up and down the ballot everywhere they go. But they can’t succeed without our support.

Contribute $10 right now to fuel our aggressive campaign to win

It’s coming down to the line. The November election is only 40 days away and, in some states, early voting has already started. Polls show many progressive Democrats barely ahead, in the margin of error, or worse… behind by double digits… even against racist Tea Party Republicans that shouldn’t even have a chance.

Matt Winner is working to deliver victory for Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy and progressive Democrats across Ohio.

Kassidy Johnson is mobilizing voters for Democrats in Rep. Tom Perriello’s district in Virginia.

In Iowa, Lindi Conover is focused on taking down Republican Chuck Grassley and electing Roxanne Conlin to shake up the U.S. Senate.

Ashley Green‘s in Pennsylvania helping Democrats and Manan Trivedi win a Republican-held seat that Obama won in 2008.

And Jay Matthew is on the ground working for Bill White for Governor to make sure Democrats finally turn Texas blue just in time for redistricting in 2011.

It’s up to us to make sure progressives win in November. All of them. Alan Grayson, Raul Grijalva, Barbara Boxer, Elaine Marshall. All of them. Working together, we can win these races, but we can’t hold anything back.

Make sure progressives win in 2010 — Contribute $5 right now to fuel the campaign

The first five Dean Corps staffers are already on the ground making a difference in these campaigns. It’s up to us to back them up.

I know I can count on you. Thank you for everything you do.
