Pledge of Resistance
Pledge of Resistance members march on TransCanada
Pledge of Resistance volunteers march to TransCanada’s office in Houston. September 16, 2013.

Ran
When the march began, I was nervous. I had never done anything like this before, but by the time we reached the Houston office of TransCanada, the company trying to build the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, my nervousness had washed away. I was resolved and ready to be arrested for blocking the entrance to TransCanada’s office. When the police came for me, my voice was hoarse from chanting for President Obama to stop the pipeline.
I decided to risk arrest because I don’t want to leave my four grandchildren with a hellish world of climate disasters and resource wars. I hate that they might have to live in a much more dangerous, polluted and inhospitable world when they are my age. To protect the climate and usher in the future they deserve, we must collectively take on hundreds of tasks to transition to a clean energy economy in next five years. And stopping Keystone XL is one very concrete thing that we can do to protect the climate RIGHT NOW.
Will you help me stop the pipeline by joining the Keystone XL Pledge of Resistance?
The Keystone XL Pledge of Resistance is a project bringing together tens of thousands of people to risk arrest in peaceful civil disobedience, if necessary, to make it politically unfeasible for President Obama to approve the pipeline.
As for myself, I am organizing a Pledge of Resistance action in Atlanta because I want to demonstrate to the President that people all across the country are commited to fighting climate change, even in conservative Georgia, where I live. Hundreds of other volunteers are organizing actions in every part of the country. We need your help to make the actions as big as possible. If we do that, we can demand the President represent the people and not the corporations and reject Keystone XL.
Please join me in the Keystone XL Pledge of Resistance and commit to participating in a peaceful civil disobedience action to call on the President to reject Keystone XL.
The bonds I formed with the twelve others arrested in Houston are some of the most powerful I’ve ever made in such a short time. Those bonds, along with the tens of thousands coming together in the Pledge of Resistance, have made clear to me that we are finally ready to take the urgent stand necessary to protect the climate. If we take that stand, President Obama will not be able to ignore us.
Join the Pledge of Resistance to stop the Keystone XL pipeline.

For the climate and our grandchildren,

Greg Sutherland                                 Keystone XL Pledge of Resistance Volunteer

P.S. Have you already signed the Pledge of Resistance? If so, please forward this email to your friends and family.

Stop palm oil slavery … Ashley Schaeffer, Rainforest Action Network

The palm oil plantations that Cargill has purchased from—and distributed to America’s household food brands—are rife with human rights violations, including slavery.

Want to remove this shocking reality from your pantry? Start by letting Cargill know that slave labor is unacceptable.

www.ran.org

In Java last year, I interviewed two men with identical stories of being lured away from their hometowns with the promise of well paid work by Cargill supplier Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK).

The two were exposed to toxic chemicals in the palm oil fields with no protection and kept under lock and key at night by armed security. Each finally escaped these horrendous slave labor conditions without ever being paid.

I need your help to convince Cargill to stop filling America’s food supply with palm oil that causes environmental and human rights violations like these.

www.ran.org

You’ve already been a massive help in putting Cargill on the path to protecting Indonesia’s rainforests. Just last week, Cargill announced it will finally be offering North American customers palm oil certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Just two years ago Cargill claimed this was impossible. Your pressure made it happen. Thank you.

We’ve clearly got a few more steps to go to ensure Cargill’s on the right side of rainforests, and I’m asking you to take those steps by my side.

Are you with me?

A New Tool For Fighting Right-Wing Lies

MediaMattersweekly_email_header_logo_altFor most of us, conservative misinformation is part of everyday life. A relative worries about Obamacare “death panels.” A coworker is certain that scientists manipulate data to support climate change. A friend posts on Facebook that more guns mean less crime.

Too often, we let lies stick around just because it’s tough to correct the record in mid-conversation. But what if it were easy?

Media Matters is excited to introduce Mythopedia, a new tool for fighting back against right-wing misinformation: http://mythopedia.mediamatters.org/

Mythopedia is the dictionary of conservative lies. It’s a simple factchecker that fits in your pocket and even responds to voice commands. We’ve seeded it with 400 common myths — and we want you to tell us what to add next.

Check out how Mythopedia works in this short video:Mythopedia Video

With the truth at your fingertips, it’s easy to call out right-wing lies wherever they appear. Try Mythopedia today: http://mythopedia.mediamatters.org/

How veterans are treated by their nation

VoteVets.org

George Washington once said that, “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.”
I was reminded of that quote last week after the filibuster of legislation to provide veterans more access to health care and tuition assistance, while restoring the cost of living adjustment for military retirees.
Senator McConnell and his Republican caucus halted the bill because of an increasingly partisan disagreement over diplomacy vs. sanctions in Iran: no sanctions, no increased care for our veterans from their perspective.
I think this is the wrong approach. The same Congress that approved our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has a responsibility to recognize that the costs of those wars continues long after the troops return home.
Join me and over 400,000 veterans, military family members, and VoteVets.org supporters and send your Senators a message that you expect them to pass the Comprehensive Veterans Health and Benefits and Military Retirement Pay Restoration Act.
Whether it’s Syria, Iran, or the shocking crisis unfolding in Ukraine, Republicans have developed a horrible habit of reflexively using national security in a completely partisan attempt to score political points.
It’s terribly disappointing, and it’s one of the reasons I am happy to partner with VoteVets.org on this important issue. It seems that all too often, the voices of those who bear the disproportionate burden of keeping our country safe are forgotten once their service is complete.
That’s not right.
Join me and write a letter to your Senators telling them to pass the Comprehensive Veterans Health and Benefits and Military Retirement Pay and Restoration Act.

The American Legion believes this legislation should pass cleanly and the American public agrees. Let’s put partisanship aside and provide for the veterans who risk so much for the country we all love.
I’ll be in touch,
Chris Murphy Senator, Connecticut
