a message from Gov.Jay Inslee

mapofWashingtonstate

As we wrap up the second week of our second special session, I want to share an update from Olympia.

While quite a bit of time has passed, my priorities remain the same. Every day, I am working to protect our commitment to funding education, while keeping our vital services to our most vulnerable intact, and every day, I’m pushing to pass a transportation package to protect our communities and grow jobs.

All over the state, Washington’s transportation infrastructure helps people get to work, moves crops from the field to the store, and carries freight to market.

Keeping that system safe and strong is mission critical to our state’s economy and it’s one of state government’s most important responsibilities. The recent Skagit Bridge collapse is a stark reminder of the critical role our transportation system plays in our communities and economy.

My team, along with a diverse coalition of stakeholders, is working day and night to get a transportation package passed that keeps Washington moving forward.

But this isn’t just about supporting the economic activity moving through our transportation system — it’s also about the jobs a transportation package would create. If we can come together in Olympia and pass a strong transportation package, it will generate well-paying, middle-class jobs in every corner of the state and help jump start Washington’s economic recovery.

My team and I are also working hard to support our long-term economic recovery by meeting our moral and constitutional duty to fully fund our kids’ education. My budget principles continue to reflect my values — making sure our kids get the best education without continuing to slash the critical services kids need to help them be successful in school.

Your support, and your commitment to the values we fought for during my campaign, helps me stand strong for our shared beliefs every day.

As the budget deadline nears and we seek to avoid a government shutdown, I will continue to insist on a budget compromise that reflects our values. Thank you for your continued engagement. I’ll keep you posted.

Very truly yours,

Jay Inslee

A great way to save some money

This week, we got some big news about the immigration reform bill. It’s a little wonky, but it’s so great that I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

The nonpartisan experts who estimate the financial impact of legislation for Congress concluded that because undocumented immigrants will start paying more in taxes for things like education and Social Security, the immigration proposal in the Senate will make the economy fairer for middle class families while cutting the U.S. deficit by almost $1,000,000,000,000 over the next two decades.

With every passing day, it’s becoming clear that we can’t afford not to act. Now we know exactly how much is at stake, and it’s the kind of news that can help to change the policy conversation in Washington.

So we’ve put together a graphic that explains exactly how this works, and we need your help to share it. If more people get the facts, it’ll be easier to build a nationwide, bipartisan consensus to get this done.

Take a look, then share this graphic with folks you know:

According to the CBO, immigration reform will save us nearly 1 trillion dollars.

Thank you so much!

Progressive Radio in Seattle Update, 6-18-13

We are looking into collaborating with Northwest Progressive Institute

Andrew Villeneuve, American political activist and entrepreneur and founder of NW Progressive Institute (http://www.nwprogressive.org/), attended our meeting at the recommendation of Chip Hanauer. NPI does media, outreach, advocacy and research for progressive causes. Andrew shared thoughts and contacts that might make our collaboration effective.

We are all invited to NPI’s 10th annual picnic, Aug. 22, Perrigo Park in Redmond! We are planning to have a table there to let more people know about what we’re doing.

Planning for an event in Seattle

A group of volunteers had their first planning meeting for Progressive Radio Seattle (PRS) Reunion/Rally Planning on June 5.  They want to create an event in the early fall.  If you are interested in helping with this or being involved in any way, please contact: travelinla@speakeasy.net

Other news

We are actively building our Progressive Radio Seattle website, and we plan to have it go live this summer.

We have a volunteer who has offered to help with our database.  We also have business people, legal experts, event planners, radio and media personalities and progressive radio advocates who have been meeting with us and sharing their skills and ideas.

If you know anyone who hasn’t signed our petition, please send them the link:

Washington Transit System

CHP Washington State Banner

Anyone want to name a bridge after Tim Eyman? The song may be funny but the situation at the State Capitol is not.

The demand for transit and safer streets for bicycles and pedestrians continues to grow and yet many legislators in Olympia simply don’t seem to get it. Washington needs to fix and properly fund our current transportation system before spending money on new highways. Senator Curtis King, Co-Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, is promoting a new transportation funding proposal that will set us back decades. This new budget proposal fails to fund over $900 million worth of projects that are necessary to operate our transit system, provide street improvements for bikes and pedestrians, and address polluted water runoff associated with roads.

Our bridges are literally crumbling around us. Workers can’t get to jobs because their bus service has been cut. The new road “mega-projects” being considered in the transportation funding proposal would dramatically increase climate changing pollution and increase sprawl. The Senate transportation funding proposal is simply unacceptable.

Tell your legislator to invest in transit, pedestrian and bicycles.

Email your legislators and tell them not to support any transportation package that fails to achieve what the House Transportation Committee advanced during the regular session in April.  At a minimum, the 12 year revenue package must:

  • Authorize “local option” funding for transit systems;
  • Fund transit directly at $420 million;
  • Fund pedestrian and bicycle projects at $370 million;
  • Fund polluted runoff mitigation and control at $156 million.

We need your support to create a better future where smart investments help us and our neighbors get where we are going safely.

Cars are our number one source of climate pollution in this state. A sustainable future demands that we have functional transit and safe streets where our children can bike and walk.  The Senate transportation package invests exactly 0 dollars in a healthy future. We need to do better.

Public polling shows over and over that Washington voters support fixing our broken roads and bridges and funding transit, bike, and pedestrian infrastructure more than new highways. Let your legislators know today that you do not support a transportation revenue package that won’t invest in safe and healthy communities, and doesn’t emphasize a fix-it-first approach to roads spending. Let’s ensure the transportation budget reflects our environmental values.

Take Action! Thank you for all that you do,
Tim Gould, Chair, Transportation & Land Use Committee
