Open Letter to the American People

To the American People:

The midterm elections that just passed were not about political parties and partisan scorekeeping. They were about you: your families, your jobs, your economic security and your future.

The message that you sent to Washington is that you want Democrats, Republicans and Independents to work together to find the common ground needed for real solutions and real progress. Democrats agree. We understand the frustration felt by all Americans – especially our middle class. We heard you, loud and clear. We’re frustrated too and will continue to fight for what you demand and deserve.

Democrats will keep fighting to make sure that big banks, big oil, those who want to privatize Social Security and other powerful special interests are prevented from taking advantage of you. We also welcome every opportunity to work with our Republican colleagues as we know the challenges that lie ahead of us know no political affiliation.

And with Republicans securing more seats in both houses of Congress, it is imperative they take their responsibility to offer bipartisan solutions more seriously. Simply saying ‘no’ will do nothing to create more jobs and strengthen our economy.

You will hear many of the media pundits say this was a tough election for those on the ballot this year, but we know that is nothing compared to the fight that middle-class families are facing to stay in their homes, find good jobs and make ends meet.

The time for politics is now over. Democrats will spare no effort to get back to work immediately in order to restore the American Dream for you and your families.

Sincerely,

Harry Reid

Jillian Harding CNN Washington (CNN) – Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California), the next chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is walking back remarks he made on conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh‘s show last month in which he called President Obama “one of the most corrupt presidents in modern times.” In an interview with CNN lead political anchor Wolf Blitzer on the Situation Room, Issa initially said, ‘It was a campaign … Read More

Express Yourself -Vote Tuesday

If Women Vote, Washington Will Listen
We can’t afford to sit this one out — make sure to vote tomorrow.

You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth saying it again: women’s votes change the face of government.

Pollsters and pundits are claiming that many women may sit this election out. But when women don’t vote, we all lose. Learn where your polling location is and make sure to vote tomorrow.

Your vote is your way of expressing what’s important to you. A host of important priorities for women are at stake in this election. For instance, your vote can say:

  • We took a major step toward meeting women’s health needs by passing a new health care law — being a woman is no longer a pre-existing condition. Let’s keep it that way.
  • Helping women and their families through hard times, expanding opportunity, and strengthening the economy are important to me. I need our leaders to support a strong safety net and a fair tax system that provides the resources needed for those investments.
  • I want Congress to make equal pay a priority and fight to make sure that women and their families won’t have to make do with 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man.

The midterm elections will make a profound difference on whether women and families will get the help they need to make ends meet in these difficult times. Women’s votes matter now more than ever. That’s why none of us can afford for women to sit this election out.

Express yourself — make sure to vote tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Emily Martin Emily Martin
Vice President and General Counsel
National Women’s Law Center

P.S. Forward this email to your family, friends, and co-workers and make sure they vote tomorrow.

Washington, Approve R-52

Tomorrow is Election Day, and you have an opportunity to make Washington‘s schools more energy efficient and create energy savings for Washington taxpayers. Vote to approve Referendum 52 and stand up for a clean energy economy that starts with retrofitted schools.

Too many of Washington’s schools are falling apart, and R-52 provides the necessary bond money to fund the energy-efficiency retrofitting of older schools and university buildings.

Not only does this enable Washington to repair its schools in an environmentally sound way, but it will create much-needed energy efficiency jobs across Washington.

Please vote by mail today — and don’t forget to approve R-52.

Repower America has been working all year on passing national legislation to help fight climate change. Tomorrow there is something you can do right in Washington to make a real change in your community.

R-52 supports a tough, smart measure that will save taxpayers money and make our air cleaner. But it can’t pass without your support.

Approve R-52 — and mail in your ballot today.

Thanks,

Maggie L. Fox
Chief Executive Officer
Climate Protection Action Fund

What are you even voting on?

By now you’ve probably already decided who you’re voting for to represent you in Congress—and maybe some other key local offices too.
But every year, there are tons of local initiatives on ballots across the country. They don’t always get as much attention—but they have huge consequences for important issues at home. And THIS year, there are initiatives on the ballot in Washington that you oughta know about.
Luckily, progressive groups and partners in Washington have put together a handy ballot guide to help you decide how to vote on some of the top initiatives offered on your ballot this year.  Click here to check it out:
Every time we’ve had an opportunity to share this kind of information with MoveOn members, we hear feedback on how helpful it is—so make sure to help your friends out too by forwarding this email!
Thanks for all you do.

Important update: Late Monday night, we got a call informing us that Lauren Valle, a MoveOn supporter, was attacked by campaign volunteers for Rand Paul, the Republican Senate candidate in Kentucky. The video is pretty awful: Three men threw Lauren to the ground, held her down, and stomped on her head and neck. She ended up in the hospital with a concussion. She’s still recovering, but she’s already speaking out about what happened—and pressing charges against her attackers, at least one of whom is so unrepentant he just demanded an apology from Lauren.

This is upsetting and outrageous and fundamentally anti-democratic. What’s worse, it’s part of a growing pattern of right-wing violence and intimidation, fueled by violent rhetoric from Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Sharron Angle, and others.

Here’s the thing, folks: we can’t let this intimidate us or derail us (which is the intent, after all). Instead, let’s work even harder over the next week to defeat the candidates that are stirring up hate. Lauren’s not stopping, and we won’t either.

If you want to make a contribution in Lauren’s name to support Jack Conway (the MoveOn-endorsed Democrat she was trying to help when she was attacked), click here:
