Health Care Supporter,

Health care will be front and center when the Democratic National Convention begins tonight. There will be a short film about the fight for the Affordable Care Act and the important benefits it has delivered to the American people. During the hour starting at 8 p.m. ET, be sure to see the story of how health care reform has transformed the lives of people across the country. Later we’ll hear from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and First Lady Michelle Obama.

We expect the video and these leaders to highlight some of the life-changing accomplishments of Obamacare that will be felt for generations to come:

  • People with pre-existing conditions will no longer be blocked from buying affordable health insurance.
  • The Medicare prescription drug plan donut hole has begun to close for good.
  • Seniors now have a whole range of preventive health benefits with zero out-of-pocket cost.
  • Women are entitled to no-cost contraception and preventive benefits.
  • Insurance companies must spend 80% of premiums on actual health care or give the difference back to consumers.
  • Small businesses that offer health plans to their workers are collecting tax credits.

Be sure to follow HCAN on Twitter and like us on Facebook. We’ll be sharing the video as soon as it is available. You can also watch the convention without interruption on C-SPAN.

Thanks,

Will O’Neill

2008 v. 2012 in Six Charts

Four years ago, the economy was on the downslide and about to go into free fall. What became a painful recession and still-ongoing recovery could’ve been another Great Depression. And then President Obama and Democrats worked together to turn things around. Too many families are still struggling and more must be done, but it’s an undeniable fact that we’ve made a lot progress since 2008.

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan would implement the same conservative policies that crashed the economy in the first place — only on a much grander scale. Here’s six charts to remind us what happened when conservatives last ran the show compared to where we are today under President Obama.

Republican women share their history with the Republican Party and how the party’s views are no longer aligned with their own. They don’t support Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and share how Romney and Ryan are wrong for women.
As they share:
“If you truly believe in a small government. That government shouldn’t be deciding what I can and cannot do with my own body.”
“There is no way on God‘s green earth that I would consider voting Republican.”
“I don’t even want to think about them having control—as a woman I don’t.”
“If you’re a conservative woman, and you believe in small government, then Barack Obama is your candidate because he’s keeping the government out of the decisions that should remain between you and God, and you and your own conscience.”

WDFW seeks to share information on elk hoof disease

OLYMPIA-The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is holding a September public meeting and has launched a website to share information about reports of hoof disease among southwest Washington elk.

Lame elk or elk with overgrown or missing hooves in southwest Washington have been observed with increasing frequency in the region. At times, multiple animals in a group have been reported limping and showing signs of hoof disease, such as deformed hooves or club hooves. The condition has been observed in both male and female elk of various ages.

The public information meeting will run from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17, in the Cowlitz PUD auditorium, 961 12th Ave., in Longview. It will include a brief presentation about the elk hoof disease, followed by a question-and-answer session.

WDFW is also providing an online reporting tool for citizens to report affected animals ( http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/health/hoof_rot/ ). The site offers information on the disease, as well as the reporting tool for those who observe elk with signs of hoof disease.

“The condition we are seeing in elk doesn’t appear to be an exact match with any of the known hoof diseases in domestic or wild animals, but it shares similarities with several diseases known in wildlife or livestock,” said Sandra Jonker, WDFW’s wildlife manager for the region. However, according to local veterinarians, the condition does not seem to be affecting domestic livestock in the area, she said.

WDFW is working with specialists in other natural-resource agencies and universities to gain a better understanding of what is causing the hoof disease.

Understanding the cause of elk hoof disease in southwestern Washington is an important step in understanding and managing its impacts, and citizen reports of elk with hoof disease will assist wildlife biologists in estimating the frequency and range of the condition, Jonker said.

“In recent years, outdoor recreation enthusiasts and landowners who shared reports of hair loss in western Washington Columbian black-tailed deer, helped wildlife biologists track the range and scope of that condition,” said Jonker. “We’re hoping that citizen observations can further our understanding of this disease as well.”

Here’s just a snapshot of what Mitt Romney‘s platform calls for:

— Turn Medicare into a voucher program to buy private insurance,
forcing seniors to pay more out of pocket for their health care costs.

— Outlaw all abortions without exception for rape or incest
(including a “salute” to states like Virginia that have passed extreme
ultrasound laws).

— Ban marriage equality and reject civil unions of all kinds.

— Won’t protect the mortgage interest deduction for middle-class
families if Romney enacts his tax plan, even though it helps more than
30 million middle-class families.

— Kill investments in clean energy jobs and reject the wind
production tax credit, which would cost up to 37,000 American jobs.

“Intolerant” and “mean-spirited” sounds about right to me.

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are in lockstep with this platform, but pay
close attention to what they’re saying up on that stage this week — I
guarantee you won’t hear a whole lot about any of that.

Instead, they’re filling their free airtime with false promises and
baseless attacks on President Obama. We can’t let them get away with it.
