National Parks & Greenpeace

While climate change melts Glacier National Park, the agency in charge of protecting it is auctioning off land for coal mines.Airship near Glacier Nat. ParkTell the Dept. of the Interior to protect our climate and public lands  don’t let coal companies expoit them!

take action today

As I write this, I can hardly put into words the beauty of the place I’m in. Soaring mountains, wide open plains, and a bright sky: Glacier National Park is sublime.

But national parks like Glacier are hurting. All across the country, climate change is dramatically altering these natural places we love. The glaciers I can see today could soon be gone. It’s devastating.

Meanwhile, the agency we trust to protect our national parks — the Department of the Interior (DOI) — keeps auctioning off other public lands for massive coal mines, fueling even more climate change!

But these are our public lands. We have a say.

Take action today and tell the head of the DOI — Secretary Sally Jewell — we want healthy national parks and public lands, not coal mines and climate change.

Just last week, the Department of the Interior gave away 8 million tons of coal from public lands in my home state of Colorado. And soon the DOI will try again to expand the enormous Decker coal mine in Montana — unlocking as much carbon pollution as 14 million cars emit every year.

The good news is that we know we can make a difference together fighting coal on public lands. The DOI is a public agency, and that means our voices matter.

Last summer, after over 35,000 Greenpeace activists like you submitted public comments on the Decker Coal Mine, the process ground to a halt for almost a year. Now we need YOUR voice to apply even more pressure and make sure more public lands aren’t turned into coal mines for profit.

Tell the Department of the Interior to stop its coal leasing program immediately, and put people and our public lands first. Not coal companies.

The Department of the Interior has spent decades preserving some public lands — like the national parks we love — while giving away others to the coal industry. But in the face of climate change, Secretary Jewell and the DOI have to change their ways. If they allow companies to mine coal on public land, it affects every national park. It affects all of us.

We need to ensure the protection of our public lands for generations to come. Tell the DOI to stop the exploitation of public land for coal industry profit. Together we can make it happen.
For the future of our parks,

P.S. The Department of the Interior is auctioning off our public lands for coal mining — causing irreparable damage to the natural places we love. Tell Secretary Sally Jewell and the DOI to protect our public lands — not exploit them for corporate profit.
