a message from News Man Dan Rather – We cannot be afraid to speak and act

Former News Anchor Dan Rather:

“History will demand to know which side were you on. None of us can afford to remain silent.”

Venerated former CBS Anchor Dan Rather just gave some BRILLIANT advice for living in Donald Trump’s America.

We are a great nation. We have survived deep challenges in our past. We can and will do so again. But we cannot be afraid to speak and act to ensure the future we want for our children and grandchildren. - Dan RatherMr. Rather hit the nail on the head.

The years ahead of us will be difficult. But none of us can afford to remain silent while Republicans threaten to destroy everything we have worked to build under President Obama.

We’ve got a climate change denier as head of the EPA, an Obamacare opponent at the head of the HHS, our next Attorney General has been openly hostile towards voting rights, and the Secretary of Education doesn’t believe in public schools.

And we’re barely scratching the surface of Trump’s dark and dismal vision for America.

If we’re going to have ANY chance of protecting our progress, Democrats need to be ready to speak up and fight for the things we believe in.

Every second Democrats stay silent, Donald Trump gets more powerful.

Medicare. Planned Parenthood. Obamacare. Voting rights. Clean air and water: We could lose it ALL…

…Unless we stand up and speak out.

So if you agree with Dan Rather — if you believe in what we stand for — we need to hear from you right now:

STOP THE GOP POWER GRAB – The Reins Act & Midnight Rules Act …exposed

jointsessioninCongressThese two bills – which have passed the House – undermine not only President Obama’s progressive legacy, but our Constitution as well. The REINS Act and “Midnight Rules” Act are headed to the Senate, and we need your help to stop them before they reach President-Elect Trump’s desk.

The REINS Act

This legislation would prevent federal agencies from implementing life-saving standards that keep Americans safe. Normally, Congress could challenge federal rules through the courts – exemplifying the checks and balances guaranteed by our Constitution. But under the REINS Act, every standard would have to be approved by Congress before the rules take effect. This would be a boon to corporations and special interests, who would lobby Congress to put corporate profits ahead of our health, safety, and security. Under the REINS Act, critical, commonsense updates to everything from clean air standards to overtime rules could go completely ignored – indefinitely. The REINS Act would serve as a major, major rewrite of the functioning of our federal government – and it’s potentially unconstitutional.

The “Midnight Rules” Act

Under the so called “Midnight Rules” Act, Congress could easily roll back important progress that President Obama made in his past year as President. This includes actions like providing school breakfast to children, implementing life-saving Ozone pollution standards, and limiting methane pollution from new oil and gas wells. Under the “Midnight Rules” Act, all of these rules and many others could be reversed in a single batch, behind closed doors, and without public input– greatly undermining our democracy.

Thanks for taking action against this reckless GOP power grab.

Let Her Learn – Fatima Goss Graves

Do you remember playing with your hair in class?

Lamya Cammon was only seven years old when her teacher cut off her braid for doing just that.

Unfortunately, her situation is not unique. Black girls of all ages are being unfairly disciplined in school. They are punished for wearing African head wraps or braids at a soccer game or even for reporting instances of sexual assault. We see more and more of these examples each day, and they all tell us the same thing: we are failing to support and protect Black girls in school.

Today we are releasing Let Her Learn, a video designed to shine a light on the stereotypes and biases affecting Black girls in school. Let Her Learn is a rallying cry, a chance for you to join us in the movement to end school pushout. But for this effort to be successful, we need your help.

Stand up for Black girls by watching and sharing this video on Facebook.

Here’s the bottom line: Children shouldn’t be punished for the color of their skin; for embracing their hair and cultural heritage; for the clothes they wear; for refusing to “act like a girl”; or for reporting harassment or assault in their schools. Now more than ever our girls deserve support and resources, not punishment.

Please take action with us today by sharing this video.

Together we can end school pushout once and for all.

Sincerely,
Fatima Goss Graves
