Clothes : Can they be ethical … a repost

beaseedforchangestickersGREENjust another rant …

Secondhand or flea market shopping has been in the news occasionally for years and as folks join the movement to keep material out of landfills or reduce their eco-footprint; some push, buy made in the US of A only; while others believe reusing is best. The problem that needs to be addressed over and over is: how toxic are the materials used to create fashion?

The idea of wearing toxic fashions let alone recycling it is a disturbing thought given what we now know and at the end of the day, it always seems to go back to making that dollar-dollar

There are a few who do 2ndhand because of financial issues, some wear it for personal reasons and even more, are on that path toward sustainable living, but as a whole 2nd hand, up-cycling, or living Eco-friendly seems to be great names but are they ethically stylish? I guess that would have to mean, intentionally buying, wearing, and devoting your dollar dollars to sustainably made only. The fact is, it is a lot tougher than folks think. Have you looked at your clothing labels?

The dictionary states that being ethical means acting in an ethical manner from an ethical point of view. Being “ethically stylish” is almost a mission impossible.  Before you say she needs more education; don’t get me wrong because I definitely get being “ethically stylish,” and “acting with intent” but when store buyers, the fashion industry, and whatnot go out of their way to use cheap labor or toxic material, being ethical demands that the fashion industry cooperates as well, lest we talk about where the industry gets their material, and sadly the manufacturing industry isn’t as vital in the USA as it used to be.

Unfortunately, this is an ongoing fight, and here we are in the year 2025.  I wonder, have other people bought and overpaid for a dress or two over the years; tried buying American-made only as well but found more often than not; truth be told, you’re buying because of the “cute factor” first, then price while looking at the tags later finding that it was not made in the US of A or out of sustainable material, which definitely offends the “ethically stylish, “code.  Sometime in the ’90s, word got out that the likelihood of fashion corporations outsourcing work because it was more cost-effective, the material was cheap, and maybe not so sustainable was reported as meaning, you’re getting more for the money; remember when big-name models, entertainment folks, and designers were caught using sweatshops.  So, Big-name companies like Levi’s, which I thought were only made here in the US as a kid, are apparently imported as well and the 501s, which were my favorite as a kid, often have insane prices, though more sustainable.

Back in the day, hearing the fashion industry, in all its forms, say they are selling or being more ethically stylish was frustrating.  There were always reports of companies and brands that sell USA-made only but could also be among others in the industry possibly using toxic materials.  This news made a few brands take a giant leap toward 100% Organic, Natural, or Sustainable. They then took several giant steps backward to rehash and or rethink who when why when, and with what, came the outrageous prices leaving a huge group of consumers out!  America needs to buy and sell locally, but again, it seems like a mission impossible as they say. Made in America is not only more expensive, but the labels are far fewer these days and the material is often blended with stuff we cannot pronounce. The history of the fashion industry and American Made is definitely a love-hate thing as designers and stars back in the day were wearing fabulous clothes rarely found on the racks, only to find out they were actually getting their clothes made by sweatshops, in some well-known and unknown countries … probably not very sustainable.

They say, no to fast fashion but need a dress quick for a show… done. Thing is, the questions still remain the same, made by whom, how much do the seamstresses get to make it, and how much did the consumer pay?

Yes, “Made in the USA” faded out to a blank whiteboard and the NYC garment district was but a memory for quite a while. There were some great “Where and what are they doing now” shows with older “go to” fashion designers, and clothiers stating the fabric just is not the same nor are the people. The opportunity to make more clothes with cheap labor & material seemed to have become addictive, and the image of what was going on in those countries was not good.   Fashion will always be a work in progress, but learning that unfair labor practices and or that companies are producing great-looking garments, but possibly using toxic material since or before is sad considering all that has happened to the industry over the years. Thus, making it tough to be ethical, let alone wear fashion that is ethically stylish or sustainable.

I still buy clothes, using the cute fit fab factor while believing in reuse, upcycling, recycled material, reclaiming, repurposing, and reducing movement, which keeps most material out of landfills, but it takes work. In this 21st Century, it now means not only checking the labels but checking after you buy because baby, trying to count the number of times an online buy was NOT cotton is embarrassing and most go to charity stores

Why did trump want to allow Employers to deny Women Birth Control

just another ongoing rant …

A trump idea and or a  allowing employers to coverage as part of their health insurance for any religious or moral reason is beyond my understanding, especially since this attitude is bumping up against 98% of the women in this country who choose and use reproductive products sometime during their lives … including Catholics! btw

Does he know, do Republicans in Congress know or care about the statistics regarding “unsafe abortions?”

It would be nice for voters to know if these people even care about providing an affordable safe place for any health procedures because Planned Parenthood is not just about abortions …planned
parenthood allows women&men btw to get help, referrals, information, and or procedures provided by a doctor.  And FYI: No woman advocates for abortion, but there are legit reasons to exercise your rights and no person should get in between a woman and her doctor …we should all want women to have a choice, preferably use any and all safe birth control for family planning and what seems to be left out of all of this … Not that anyone needs a reminder, but sometimes republicans seem to need them quite often

… hey folks, it takes two to engage in sex so what part or role do men have in any of this nonsense, are folks just plain’ole stupid or is it a higher standard that Republicans seem to push upon women?   It makes you wonder if republican men don’t think about having to experience any of this ish because most feel ….well, as of late politicians show it with comments on the floor of Congress and then vote the reality of their privileged lives …   Not how the average American is living in this era of trump

Get your fav snack … it’s Oscar weekend

oscarwithlighting

The Oscars, 2024, known for being one of a few Award Shows that people actually schedule their day and or lives around, is finally here. Quick get your fav snacks and, drinks and ooh girl look on.  It offers up winners and losers in film, costume, writers, music, actors, and directors, but most of us seem to tune in for the fashion, makeup, or latest cutie pie.  The night is about the best of all things good-looking, ugly, and maybe a malfunction of some kind. There might be some dancing possibly people you won’t see in person …unless you live in NYC go to Aspen a lot or live in Cali, and reports are some look different … well, fantasy is just better than reality isn’t!

This year the Oscars offer us more than just family fun or fantasy but films about slavery, politics, autism, or being bipolar and what impact each has on lives and legacies … tune in on March 10, 2014

Oscar enthusiasts watch to find out the latest info on who might be pregnant, divorced, who is wearing what, why, and in the end, all of us have an opinion on all the fashions worn during the event, as a star or model walks down the Red Carpet, and the big question?  … honestly, did your family, your agent, or your date let you leave out the house with that on?  I said it.

It seems like very few Oscars have been amusing due to the state of our economy  …entertainers were telling us … money doesn’t buy you happiness etc. blah blah blah; I agree, but it doesn’t buy taste either, SO …let the judging begin. lol

There are a lot of us couch potatoes stylists wondering about the credentials needed and being claimed by some of these so-called pros … don’t get me started

My observation is that dressing in labels is great – love labels, but maybe it’s time to switch it up People …the economy is making brand names have two lines …the upscale and what you can get at a “Regular” store or off the rack.  Yes, we all know that it is important not to be seen wearing something, us civilians would wear and most try to avoid being caught with the same dress on at any given event. We can also forge-’bout actors slash designers wearing their own clothing lines to a high-end event, or seeing anyone who makes a living in front of the camera wearing a Vera done for Kohl’s clothing store. I could be wrong. However, it seems like a great idea, a change of pace and given the times would probably bring more interest and sales to the clothes at the “Regular” store.  We all know a FLOTUS who wore both Designer and Average Girl Fashion

Anyway,  … no one sits at home without voicing an opinion on what these folks are wearing on Oscar night … let’s help change fashion don’t into fashion do … by tweeting some lol advice, and enjoy!

The Hyde Amendment … a reminder~~STARTED 12/13/1971 ENDED 1/22/1973 internet

Unhappy Birthday to the Amendment That Started the War on Women

I received a like & a few comments from someone from the extreme right, well, a breitbart team member.  I have no respect for what breitbart represented.

I also have issues with FOX being considered a news program that is actually a Republican station, so any use of them as a resource is just not going to fly. When it comes to Election2012, I am definitely concerned about the folks that Ryan represents the fact that he not only follows, but also quotes Ayn Rand while quietly plotting out a plan to overturn roe V wade. The top of the ticket is an even scarier thought because Ryan like Romney along with other Republicans have planned NOT to give Americans the necessary information to make intelligent choices. Though folks are starting to tune in this – is the most important election Americans have had to participate in and Republicans are doing whatever they have to in order that left leaning folks right to vote is suppressed in election2012. I am, particularly concerned about a woman’s right to choose as Republican Governors  took it upon themselves to pass unacceptable legislation ,screamed about their religious freedoms have been violated. While women all over the World watched in horror as a panel of men who not only refused to listen to Sandra fluke, they denied Eleanor Holmes Norton a seat at the table as well. I don’t know about you but I was pissed, scared and determined not to let a group of men turn back the clock in a fight for by women who suffered from a lack of Equality in all its forms, I mean are these men serious? do they think women are too stupid to make their own health care decisions or is there another reason for the sudden need to ban birth control possibly trash roe V wade.  Maybe. I know Women’s suffrage was about a whole lot more than reproductive rights and we all must remember VAMA and the Equal pay Act are bills sitting waiting to become laws. While those in Congress, specifically republicans have decided, no business is good for their Elections there is a lot of Republican talk out there about birth control and abortion, which should scare Women. As VP Joe Biden stated in the debate, roe V wade is only as safe as the Supreme Court justices allowed to sit on the court are objective.    The Hyde amendment was a knee jerk reaction from a man or group of men who believed that had the right to invade a Woman’s personal space, life and their right to choose. Unfortunately, in the end it became a law. We all know 98% of women use birth control. I know plenty girls (women) who have had abortions at 18, some are now married , have kids doing quite well thank you… went to college have good jobs and some are in that 47% because they are single parents . As a person of colour and mom, I am more than scared to be governed by Romney/Ryan … imagine that finger wagging Gov. Brewer did ; only it will be Romney/Ryan after having eliminated all social programs warning all of us brown, black ,mixed and whites folks considered a part of that low life 47%.  So, as we gasp at most if not at all of what Conservatives are saying  we hear so-called Republican, Trump and the rest of the new Republicans the notion that the time has come for the Rich to Rule America is in full effect this very moment.

I grew up thinking America was a good place to live for everyone but given the push from the “have it all” but it’s not enough seem to be trying to buy Election2012 Votes, we must all stay the course, fight back with our votes to fight the mission to turn back the clock or change our democracy.  I have some serious doubts, especially with what I am reading on your blog – Republicans have taken a big risk and trashed 47% ,do not forget this includes Vets, teachers, firefighters police …City County and State workers have been cut, slashed and burned by the GOP.

I know the write up was negative … Though it might be a good opportunity to trade information, find out exactly why ideology rates higher than the greater good … well, at least ask.

FYI … from the Center for American Progress

Unhappy Birthday to the Amendment That Started the War on Women

… birth control become controversial?” In some ways, we can thank former Rep. Henry Hyde (R.-Ill.) for setting us on this path. The attacks on contraceptive coverage can be traced back to an amendment of his that turns 36 years old today. The Hyde Amendment…

Black History… is American History

“I am no friend of slavery, but i prefer the liberty of my own country to that of another people, and the liberty of my own race to that of another race. The liberty of the descendants of Africa in the United States is incompatible with the safety and liberty of the European descendants. Their slavery forms an exception (resulting from a stern and inexorable necessity) to the general liberty in the United States.”

Richard Powell said, “Jacob Lawrence maintained that he was not a “protest” painter but a depictor of scenes. He had ambitious visions and experimented considerably with his styles over the decades. Some of his works in the series”Over the line” are a bit clumsy, but most likely intentionally so and always strong and there is little ambiguity about his sympathy for his subjects.”

I strongly suggest looking reading and researching the works …”scenes” of the great Jacob Lawerence … they speak loud and clear – say what so many of us are feeling yet too timid to express.

I am a big Jacob Lawrence fan … met him; he was very calm quiet and gracious and UW was very fortunate to have him as an  “Artist in Residence” and faculty member. Anyway, his “scenes” speak to the current social conditions of today and the quote I choose to use for my rant is from Henry Clay … a symbol of conservatism … in a bad way and could explain the need for both the “Harriet Tubman” and”Migration of the Negro” series – Nativegrl77
