Heat will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for those who are sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration.

Warm overnight temperatures will bring limited relief to the interior.

Summary

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1. For sheltering information and other human services in your area, dial 2 1 1 during business hours or visit wa211.org anytime. To stay safe when heat and smoke are present, go to spaces with indoor cooling and air filtration. To cool spaces with no air conditioning, pull shades to block daytime heat. Use portable air cleaners or DIY box fan filters to help cool and clean air. Stay hydrated and limit activity until heat and smoke improve.

An Air Quality Alert for wildfire smoke has been issued by the following agencies:

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, Olympic Region Clean Air Agency.

An Air Quality Alert has been issued for King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, Mason, Grays Harbor, and Thurston Counties through 5pm Thursday, August 6 due to wildfire smoke from regional fires. Air quality is expected to be UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS to UNHEALTHY for most of the area.

When the air quality is UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS, individuals with health concerns and pre-existing conditions should reduce exposure and take precautions.

At UNHEALTHY air quality, all individuals should take precautions to reduce exposure. This means limiting time outside, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity, and following tips for cleaner indoor air.

On August 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air-traffic controllers for striking in violation of his order to return to work. The executive action, regarded as extreme by many, significantly slowed air travel for months.

Two days earlier, on August 3, almost 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike after negotiations with the federal government to raise their pay and shorten their workweek proved fruitless. The controllers complained of difficult working conditions and a lack of recognition of the pressures they face. Across the country, some 7,000 flights were canceled. The same day, President Reagan called the strike illegal and threatened to fire any controller who had not returned to work within 48 hours. Robert Poli, president of the Professional Air-Traffic Controllers Association (PATCO), was found in contempt by a federal judge and ordered to pay $1,000 a day in fines.

On August 5, an angry President Reagan carried out his threat, and the federal government began firing the 11,359 air-traffic controllers who had not returned to work. In addition, he declared a lifetime ban on the rehiring of the strikers by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

On August 17, the FAA began accepting applications for new air-traffic controllers, and on October 22 the Federal Labor Relations Authority decertified PATCO.

An Air Quality Alert has been issued for King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston Counties from 12pm Monday August 3 through 5pm Wednesday August 5 due to expected wildfire smoke from regional fires.

Air quality conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day today as smoke begins to mix down to the surface. Particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations may reach UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS.

When air quality is UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS, individuals with health concerns and pre-existing conditions should reduce exposure and take precautions.

This means limiting time outside, avoiding strenuous activity, and following tips for cleaner indoor air.
