General Mills Gets Huge Outpouring of Support for Marriage Equality Stance – HRC.org

Nearly 80k Thank General Mills for Marriage Equality Support

General Mills made headlines last month when the company announced its opposition to the discriminatory ballot measure in Minnesota that would ban committed, loving same-sex couples from marrying.

The National Organization for Marriage was, of course, not pleased – and promptly launched an ill-conceived campaign calling on consumers to boycott the iconic company for pushing a “radical social agenda.” Since the campaign’s inception, about 20,000 people have signed on.

HRC later launched an action thanking General Mills for supporting marriage equality – that action has nearly 80,000 supporters to date; four times the number of NOM supporters. Join those thanking General Mills and sign your name now.

Please, add your name to our petition. We’re sending a powerful message to General Mills that consumers back companies that support marriage equality. Just last week, Fortune 500 company Thomson Reuter also voiced its support for equality and came out against the amendment.

HRC is a proud supporter of the coalition, Minnesotans United for All Families, working to defeat the amendment banning same-sex marriage in the state.  HRC has set up a special fund – HRC Minnesota Family Freedom PAC – to direct 100 percent of your contribution to defeat the anti-marriage constitutional amendment in Minnesota.

Sen. Whitehouse BLASTS right wing Cato “expert”

Last week, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) showed why he’s a national progressive rising star.

At a hearing on overturning Citizens United, Sen. Whitehouse faced an “expert” from the right-wing Cato Institute who advocated more anonymous campaign spending by corporations and billionaires. Whitehouse took him “to the proverbial woodshed,” according to one news site.

Watch the amazing video here — and join our campaign to overturn Citizens United and Take Back Democracy!

Sen. Whitehouse blasts right-wing Cato

At the hearing, the Cato “expert” said there should be no limits on campaign contributions — and only donations over $500,000 should be disclosed because the Koch brothers and other billionaires deserve their privacy!

Sen. Whitehouse showed that he isn’t afraid of a fight. He asked tough questions, made the Cato guy seem completely foolish, and received applause from the audience. Watch it happen here — and join the fight to Take Back Democracy!

Thanks for being a bold progressive.

September Vote on Six-Month CR Would Provide Stability for Fall Fiscal Negotiations

Washington, D.C.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced an agreement with House Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama on a six-month Continuing Resolution (CR) that will avoid a government shutdown while funding the government at $1.047 trillion.

“This agreement reached between the Senate, the House and the White House provides stability for the coming months, when we will have to resolve critical issues that directly affect middle class families. The funding levels in the six-month CR will correspond to the top-line funding level of $1.047 trillion. I hope that we can face the challenges ahead in the same spirit of compromise.”

Senator Reid offered Lieberman-Collins amendment # 2731 and Franken amendment #2732 to S.3414, Cybersecurity Act of 2012. He then filled the remaining amendments on the so called amendment tree. Finally, he filed cloture on the bill.

Senator Reid then moved to proceed to S.3429, Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012

As a result of cloture being filed, the filing deadline for first degree amendments to S.3414 is 1:00pm on Wednesday, August 1. If your senator has a germane first degree amendment and would like to preserve their ability to offer, please send a signed copy of the amendment to the cloakroom prior to the deadline so that we may file it at the desk for you. If you have already filed, there is no need to refile.

Vote Tomorrow: Don’t Mess with Abortion Access for D.C. Women

National Women's Law Center
Stop the restrictions!
Tell your Representative to oppose the effort to limit access to abortion for women who live in Washington, D.C.
Take Action

With only a few days left until August recess, this is what they are prioritizing — an anti-abortion bill that the Senate will never consider? Well, the House of Representatives is at it again and this time, just to add insult to injury, they are going after women who have no voting representation in the House.
Tell your Member of Congress to oppose the D.C. Abortion Ban and stop your Representative from making decisions for women about their reproductive health.
H.R. 3803, also known as the “D.C. Abortion Ban,” would ban almost all abortions in Washington, D.C. for women starting at twenty weeks post-fertilization. The legislation seeks to ban abortion after twenty weeks regardless of a woman’s situation and without exceptions for rape, incest or to protect a woman’s health.
This unconstitutional bill follows the onslaught of reproductive health attacks that aim to deny women access to a constitutional right. The attacks this year have been particularly extreme: from state laws that defund Planned Parenthood to federal legislation that would require doctors to racially profile their patients before allowing them decide to terminate a pregnancy.
We’ve said it once, we’ll say it again: our health is not up for debate! Tell your Representative to oppose the D.C. Abortion Ban and stop restricting women’s access to reproductive health today.
Thank you for continuing to fight.
Sincerely,

Judy Waxman Judy Waxman Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights National Women’s Law Center

P.S. Your support allows us to continue to fight for women’s reproductive health care as well as work on many other critical issues. Please consider making a generous contribution today.
