We have lost 80% of the Artic sea ice

We made it!
Last week, along with five other women, I scaled Europe’s tallest skyscraper to show  our leaders and Shell that we don’t want Arctic drilling. Now we need you to take the reins and make sure the whole world knows why we need to protect the Arctic.
This feat took us 15 hours of climbing. Despite our exhaustion, the outpouring of support from tens of thousands of people all over the world kept our spirits high. When we reached the top, we waved a flag for the Arctic in direct view of Shell’s three London headquarters.
There were only six of us up there, but there are millions of us in every corner of the world who want the Arctic protected. The most effective action we can do now is to make everyone else care for the Arctic as we do, and to do that we need to make it big news. This is not a niche subject. This affects every single person on our planet.
Everyone should know that we’ve lost 80% of the Arctic sea ice in the last 30 years, the sea ice that cools our planet and provides a home to unique species like the polar bear. That should make people want to protect it — not to drill for more oil, one of the fossil fuels that caused the melting in the first place.
Shell doesn’t want us talking about their dangerous Arctic oil drilling plans. Together we can shout about them from the rooftops 😉
Thanks for everything,
Victo (and Sandra, Sabine, Liesbeth, Wiola and Ali)

Say NO to oil drilling

President Obama is deciding whether or not to open up even more of the Arctic for drilling with a new round of lease sales.
take action today!
This lease sale will start any day now. Tell the president to follow through on the climate promise he delivered in his speech and cancel the sale.
take action today

Right now, President Obama is considering whether or not to open up more of the Alaskan Arctic for oil drilling by launching a new round of lease sales for the Chukchi Sea.
Despite Shell’s failures last summer, oil companies are desperate to secure the rights to drill in the Arctic. What’s at stake here isn’t just one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places on earth. But the future of our climate.
We have a real chance to throw a wrench in this Arctic lease sale process before it even begins. It’s expected to start any day, so the time is now to flood the White House with messages telling them to cancel the sale. It’s the perfect opportunity for the President to make good on the climate speech he made just a few weeks ago.
This Arctic lease sale will start any day now. Send an urgent message to President Obama right now telling him to cancel plans for the upcoming Arctic lease sale.
Last year Shell confirmed what experts have been saying all along — that drilling for oil in the Arctic will never be safe. A series of equipment, permit and weather related mishaps along with general incompetence caused the company to pack up and postpone its plans to drill.
There’s more at stake here than just the Arctic. Allowing companies like Shell to drill in the Arctic only deepens our dependence on fossil fuels and speeds up dangerous global climate change.
If the President is truly committed to limiting US carbon emissions, he will cancel this lease sale. This is his chance to back up his inspiring promise to address climate change with real action on the issue.
Tell President Obama that we can’t stop global climate change by opening up more of the Arctic for oil drilling.
A few weeks ago President Obama made a promise to the American people: “I refuse to condemn your generation and future generations to a planet that’s beyond fixing”.
We do not need to drill for Arctic oil. Wind and solar energy are becoming cheaper and more viable than fossil fuels by the day. And the people who are living in the polluted shadow of coal fired power plants and other dangerous fossil fuel projects are fighting back. Our climate movement is stronger than ever.
We need to make sure President Obama keeps his climate promise by opposing this lease sale and every other fossil fuel project including the Keystone XL pipeline that will only make this problem worse.
I want to be part of the generation that acted. I want our kids and grandkids to look back and be proud of all we accomplished. Fossil fuels played their part in helping to build our society, but their time is over.
Clean energy is here right now. We don’t need this oil. The climate can’t afford it. Join me today in opposing this new round of Arctic lease sales by taking action.
The clean energy revolution has started. We can do this. Our movement is stronger than ever before, and now we have the President on our side.
Sincerely,
Nicky Davies Greenpeace Campaigns Director
P.S. The Arctic lease sale could start any day now. Send President Obama your message today!

BREAKING: we’re climbing a skyscraper to save the Arctic

Hi

If you’re reading this email it means I’m clinging to the side of London’s Shard – attempting something that’s never been done before: scaling Europe’s tallest skyscraper.

If we make it to the top, we plan to install a giant piece of art in direct view of Shell‘s three London headquarters down around me. We can see them, so I know they can see us.

WATCH LIVE and share this page to show the whole world that we don’t want Arctic drilling.

I’ve been climbing for years, but this is the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on.

Am I scared? Hell yeah. But I know that fear is only what you make of it. For me this is a personal act of bravery, and I hope that beyond all else it can encourage anyone hesitating over taking action – no matter what scale – to take that step today.

There are only six of us up here, but there are millions of us in every corner of the world who want the Arctic protected.

The most effective action we can do now is to make everyone else care for the Arctic as we do, and to do that we need to make it news. This is not a niche subject. This affects every single person on our shared planet.

Everyone should know that we’ve lost 80% of the Arctic sea ice in the last 30 years, and that should make people want to protect it. Not to drill for more oil, one of the fossil fuels causing the melting in the first place.

Follow our progress on LIVE TV and please share this page with everyone you know on Facebook, Twitter and over email. Let’s make this as big as we can.

Shell doesn’t want us talking about their dangerous Arctic oil drilling plans. Together we can shout about them from the rooftops 😉

Wish us luck,

Victo (and Sandra, Sabine, Liesbeth, Wiola and Ali)

“It seems madness that we are willing to go to the ends of the earth to find the last drops of oil when our best scientific minds are telling us we need to get off fossil fuels to give our children a future. At some time, in some place, we need to take a stand. I believe that time is now, and that place is the Arctic.”

Sir Paul McCartney

Greenpeace and Paul McCartney are joining up to raise awareness about the Arctic through an innovative new website called the Urgency Network.

Shell heads to Russia

greenpeace
Shell was forced to quit in the US Alaskan Arctic this year after a series of dangerous and humiliating failures. But now Shell has a Plan B to enter the Arctic through Russia, and it’s urgent that we spread the word before it’s too late. We need you to share this video to expose Shell’s ruthless new plan, and ask your friends to sign the petition to save the Arctic from oil destruction:
StopShell
Increasingly desperate to plunder the Arctic in any way possible, Shell has made a deal with the devil: partnering with monstrous Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom to access the Arctic through Russia, where laws are lax and corruption is rife.

Shell’s new bedfellow Gazprom is infamous for a catastrophic accident in 2011 when its oil rig sank in stormy weather – and 53 people died. This new partnership is a guaranteed oil spill in the making, and the environmental catastrophe zone of northern Russia is a preview of the Arctic’s future if we don’t act.
We know that spreading this video will harm Shell’s carefully-tended reputation. The last thing the company wants is to appear as a risky investment to its shareholders and partners, so broadcasting this treacherous new deal to the world could help keep Shell out of the Russian Arctic.
Help us trash Shell’s brand before they trash the Arctic. Click here to see the video, share it with your friends and invite them to our movement. You can also just forward this email, or copy and paste the text below.
Thanks so much.

Friend,
Have you seen this petition to save the Arctic? www.savethearctic.org. I’ve signed and you should too.
The Arctic is under threat like never before. As polar sea ice melts faster than ever, huge oil companies like Shell are rushing to profit from Arctic oil at any cost. An oil spill would have deadly consequences for this fragile environment, destroying the home of Indigenous communities and amazing species like polar bears.
Help us declare a global sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the North Pole, and a ban on offshore drilling and industrial fishing in the whole region. Join our 3 million-strong movement now at www.savethearctic.org.
Thanks!
