Sustainable energy

The Climate Reality Project

If a doctor said your loved one required major surgery to survive, but it would be very difficult to complete, would you take “No, it’s too hard” for an answer?

We didn’t think so. So when climate deniers claim, “Shifting over to clean energy would be too hard and shut down the economy,” we here at The Climate Reality Project politely beg to differ.

Maybe you do too.

We put a man on the moon. We eradicated smallpox. We built a computer that can fit in your pocket. These accomplishments — and so many more — were possible because groups of like-minded, passionate individuals (much like you) saw the future they wanted and worked hard to make it happen.

Big Oil and Big Coal spread big lies claiming that changing to clean energy would cause economic turmoil and finding sustainable solutions to the climate crisis “is too hard.”

But that’s just not the case. We’re already seeing that shifting to clean energy is a whole lot easier than they think. In 2012, renewables accounted for slightly over half of new electric generating capacity worldwide. In the U.S, we’re installing a new solar power system every four minutes. Meanwhile, global investment in clean energy topped out at $244 billion worldwide. In 2009, global investment was just $178 billion — so in just three years that’s a 37 percent climb, and nearly ten times the investment made in 2004.

As we reach the end of August, we need your help to keep the pressure on climate deniers by using Reality Drop. We’re less than 1,000 away from our end-of-month goal of sharing the truth 50,000 times on key articles across the net.

We know the transition to clean energy won’t happen overnight. But it will happen and you can bet it will be sooner rather than later.

With your help, we can get there. Thank you for all your hard work,
The Climate Reality Team

New video reveals the true cost of carbon pollution

I’m excited to share with you the latest video in our climate conversation series, The Price of Carbon. This short video, narrated by comedian and musician Reggie Watts, underscores the high cost we are all already paying for carbon pollution.

From Superstorm Sandy to soaring temperatures in Australia, ongoing drought that has parched more than 60% of the U.S., and flooding from hurricanes around the world, we are experiencing the consequences of our carbon pollution now. We are paying the cost of these dirty weather disasters and other climate impacts through taxes, medical bills, and insurance rates (to name just a few). It’s past time to talk about the real cost of carbon pollution and to take action so that the polluters are paying their fair share.

In the spirit of moving forward to solve the climate crisis, it’s time to jump-start a real carbon conversation. Watch the video. Share it with your friends. Be part of the carbon conversation.

24 House of Reality

The Climate Reality Project

In case you missed our big announcement Sunday, I wanted to share some exciting news:

Our second annual 24 Hours of Reality event, 24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report, will take place on November 14.

We will gather together for a global webcast, streamed for 24 hours in all 24 time zones, showcasing how climate change and extreme weather are altering our lives and our planet.

Watch the announcement here from former Vice President Al Gore and share it with your friends:

Last year, millions of people around the world watched the first annual 24 Hours of Reality and were empowered to share the reality of climate change and join our call to action. And now, one year later, the climate crisis has intensified more than we even expected. The need for us to come together has never been more timely or important.

I’ll have much more to share with you soon, including ways in which you can be a part of this global event. Thank you for your continuing support of our work. We look forward to seeing you online on November 14!

Watch former Vice President Al Gore announce 24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report, and share this video with your friends.

Sincerely, Maggie L. Fox

The greatest number of comments ever received

We recently joined our allies in the climate movement to drop off more than 2.1 million statements in support of the first-ever limit on carbon pollution in the United States.

Millions of people like you sent a clear message: We know climate change is happening. And it’s time for our leaders to do something about it — now.

But you can be sure that well-funded oil and coal companies will do everything in their power to stop this from happening. And I hope you will help us fight back.

Donate $5 today to help The Climate Reality Project fight for even stronger limits on dangerous, climate-altering pollution.

We joined forces with allies from across the country to deliver more than 2.1 million statements of support for the EPA‘s historic limits on carbon pollution. As Assistant Administrator Gina McCarthy told us, “You say 2 million casually, but that’s a lot of people.”

2.1 million is the greatest number of comments ever received for an environmental regulation in history. 2.1 million comments filled more than 50 boxes on the steps of the EPA. To give you some perspective, 2.1 million people couldn’t fit in all of the sports stadiums in the United States.

But you and I both know we need to keep the pressure on the fossil fuel industry and the well-funded interests that deny the reality of climate change.

I’m writing this from my home state, Colorado — where right now, there are nearly unimaginable forest fires we can see right out the window. A winter with little snow, record-high temperatures and a prolonged drought have combined to fuel some of the largest fires in the state’s history.

Here’s what’s even more alarming: Scientists say that as climate change accelerates, we can expect the risk of destructive fires to increase here in the West and all over the world.

That’s why we can’t just talk about climate change. We need to call on our leaders to take action — and we can’t wait any longer.

Join the 2.1 million voices in support of historic limits on carbon pollution. Help us keep up the fight, and donate $5 to The Climate Reality Project today.

Heartland billboard takeover

Did you hear about The Heartland Institute‘s outrageous billboard comparing people who believe in climate change to mass murderers and terrorists? It’s possible you missed it, since a firestorm of criticism compelled them to take down their ad in one day. Take a look:

Since the billboard is now empty, we are reminding Heartland who is really on the fringe here. Just for this week, as Heartland convenes its annual conference, we are putting up our own ad in its place and on eight other billboards nearby — so that Chicagoans and everyone at the conference will see our response. And we are sharing this ad far and wide.

The Heartland Institute has a history of spreading denial and doubt about everything from tobacco to climate change. Now, they are associating everyone who believes in climate science with the worst of the worst.

We can’t let them have the last word. Serious leaders in science, business, religion and government from around the world have long recognized the need to take action to address the growing climate crisis. Our billboard will reflect their voices in the days ahead. And we need your help.

Take a look at our ad and help support this project.

Climate change is real. But there are groups out there — like the Heartland Institute — with a vested interest in promoting dirty fossil fuels. Don’t let them. Donate to our campaign to stop the climate deniers and win the conversation:
