| As the President said last week, “some election nights are more fun than others. Some are exhilarating; some are humbling.”
Last Tuesday took place in a very difficult electoral environment. But I’m incredibly proud of the work we did this year. The plan we built and implemented together was unprecedented in an election like this — it helped make the difference for dozens of good candidates, and it laid the groundwork for the fights ahead. We put together a page to illustrate the impact we had. In six months, Democrats, on front porches and on the phones, reached out to more than 80 million voters across the country. Volunteers organized 36,994 events in their neighborhoods, building on an infrastructure that was already the most ambitious grassroots operation in politics. For get-out-the-vote weekend, you filled more than 200,000 volunteer shifts at 2,839 GOTV staging locations. As Linda in Henderson, Nevada, said, “The most gratifying experience was talking to people one-on-one and telling them what the President and Senator Reid are doing. [We] really engaged people — all different generations wanted to know how we were going to make our country better.” On Election Day, some folks on the West Coast got up at 4:00 a.m. to make calls to voters on the East Coast, and some East Coasters stayed on the phones until midnight, when the last polls closed in Hawaii and Alaska. On a tough night, there were a few key races where this work put us over the top — despite being outspent by corporate interests. Take a look at the recap we put together — and share it with friends: http://my.barackobama.com/WhatWeDidTogether The work we did together was not just about winning a single election, but about building this movement. It’s about organizing our communities, talking to voters, and getting our message out. It wouldn’t have been possible without you. As we move forward, I’m optimistic about the fights ahead because of the energy and effort you gave this one. And, as we lay out the path forward, we’ll be relying heavily on your thoughts and your feedback. I’m proud to fight alongside you. — Mitch Mitch Stewart |

Bullying judges

Bullying judges? NOM targeted three independent Iowa justices to send a message: |
The nation’s #1 anti-gay organization just struck a blow to our nation’s courts.
In 2009, every Iowa Supreme Court justice agreed that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. This election season, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) set its political bulls-eye on ousting three of those justices. On Election Day, all three lost.
It was a calculated warning shot aimed at judges nationwide, all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court: Either you cast aside centuries of judicial independence and rule according to our radical, anti-gay ideology – or we’ll come get you.
We may not always see eye to eye with Chief Justice Roberts, but we can all agree that judges should be independent. NOM’s actions were a blatant, ideological assault on our nation’s courts. Iowa’s judicial retention elections were created to prevent fraud, misconduct or malfeasance. They were never intended to allow one hate group and its fringe allies to dump $600,000 into a state over a single — and unanimous — decision they didn’t like.
But that’s exactly what happened. Last month, NOM’s president Brian Brown said: “If the people of Iowa… remove these judges, there will be reverberations throughout the country all the way to the United States Supreme Court.”
Wow. Is that an ultimatum? That’s how bullies operate.
It gets worse. Marriage equality is in jeopardy. As NOM’s Brown boasted post-election: “We now have the ability to roll back same-sex marriage in Iowa and New Hampshire and pass a constitutional amendment in Minnesota.”
It’s time to speak out, like HRC and the Courage Campaign are doing at NOMExposed.org. NOM cannot be allowed to dismantle our independent judiciary. Iowa can’t be a beginning. It must be an end. Tell Chief Justice John Roberts to stick up for the judiciary and decry this attack on our independent court system.
A fair and independent judiciary is important for all Americans, and crucial to protecting the rights of LGBT people. Learn about what HRC is doing to educate the next generation about our judicial system at www.hrc.org/equalityinthecourts.
NOM’s gone rogue. It’s slash-and-burn, no matter the consequences. Being anti-gay is one thing. Tearing down our justice system is something quite different.
Enough is enough.
Sincerely,

Joe Solmonese
President
RE: Recount Alerts: Eight Outstanding
Midnight tonight marks a critical milestone in our unwavering campaign to move America forward.
That’s the deadline for sending urgently needed financial resources to the field to support eight Democrats in races that remain too close to call. The most important thing you can do right now to ensure we win these battleground races is help us raise the remaining $43,627 we need by tonight’s Voter Protection deadline.
In the early morning hours after Election Day, we sent staff and legal teams to help these members locked in battles but they need urgent resources to keep up the fight.

I know I’ve asked a lot of you already. But what happens in these eight campaigns has enormous implications for the future. Having more Democrats in Congress will not only give us a head start on returning to the Majority in 2012, but it will also affect our ability to oppose the Republicans‘ radical plans for rolling back health care reform, dismantling the Department of Education and privatizing Social Security and Medicare.
Time and time again, you have refused to have your voices silenced by the special interests. Now we must reaffirm our commitment to ensure every vote is counted fairly and accurately.
Thank you,
Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House
P.S. There are only hours left before tonight’s Midnight deadline to send out money to our voter protection efforts. Please stand with me to make sure Republicans don’t repeat the questionable tactics they used in Florida in 2000. We need these eight Democrats in Congress. Contribute before Midnight Tonight to our Voter Protection efforts to help keep up the fight.
Stop ABC News from giving a platform to a race-baiting liar

Tell ABC News: Don’t give Andrew Breitbart a platform to spread his lies.
One of the most precious assets of a news organization is its credibility. So it’s appalling that ABC News’ election night coverage on Tuesday will include notorious propagandist and serial race-baiter Andrew Breitbart, who only months ago was publicly disgraced for falsely smearing Shirley Sherrod. We cannot let this go unchallenged. That is why CREDO is joining with our friends at Color of Change to put a stop to this and tell ABC to rescind its invitation to Breitbart. There are plenty of other conservatives who ABC News could turn to for analysis or commentary. By inviting someone like Breitbart to participate, ABC News is not only calling its own credibility into question, it is also serving to rehabilitate the credibility of Andrew Breitbart and legitimate more of his race-baiting lies. The saga that led to Breitbart’s very public identification as a liar who intentionally stokes racial animosity began when Breitbart released a heavily edited video of Sherrod, then an official with the USDA, which Breitbart claimed was “video evidence of racism coming from a federal appointee and NAACP award recipient.” In the hit piece Breitbart released, Sherrod (who is black) appears to be saying that she withheld aide to a white farmer because of his race. Breitbart’s stated purpose for releasing the video was to defend the Tea Party from charges of racism leveled by the NAACP, and to further claim that the video showed that the NAACP, Democrats and the Obama administration were comfortable with black people discriminating against whites. The only problem was that Breitbart lied about what Sherrod actually said. The full video of her remarks clearly demonstrated that Sherrod not only aided the farmer, but was using the story to illustrate how viewing the situation through the narrow lens of race was the wrong thing to do. As Mark Twain said, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” That’s what happened here. After Breitbart’s post, the story gained steam as news organizations breathlessly hyped Breitbart’s video before verifying the basic story. In the time it took for the truth to get out about the anti-racist message Sherrod very clearly both said and intended to communicate, Sherrod was publicly vilified and was fired from her job. Multiple news organizations apologized on air and in print for the egregiously bad way they handled the over-hyped Sherrod incident-all of which was based on Breitbart’s horribly irresponsible video and the absolutely misleading ways he characterized it. It is infuriating and absurd that a news organization, just a few months later, would give Breitbart another chance to spread his deceit. One of the most disturbing implications of Breitbart’s participation is that it was his site that was the launching pad of the mendacious videos that ultimately led to the collapse of ACORN, an organization that helped register and turnout voters in poor communities and communities of color. In the last couple of weeks, we have already seen Republicans and their conservative allies preemptively level wild-eyed accusations of voter fraud (much of which is laden with racial overtones). This not only serves to incite the intimidation and harassment of legitimate voters in communities of color by those who believe the voter fraud conspiracy theories, it also sets the stage for claims that Democrats “stole the election” if and when Republican candidates don’t win. ABC News has a positive duty to spread true information and fight the spreading of lies. And that’s doubly true when the lies underscore the deeply harmful notion that people of color are somehow scheming on a massive scale to subvert our democracy. Yet by including the likes of Andrew Breitbart, ABC News is failing this public duty in huge way. By including Breitbart, ABC News is providing him the means to reach people he would otherwise not reach with a deceitful message that will seem much more trustworthy than Breitbart deserves. Thank you for working for a better world. Becky Bond, Political Director P.S ABC has started to backpedal in the face of growing criticism. On Friday, David Ford of ABC News confirmed to Media Matters that Breitbart “will be one of many voices on our air” on election night. But yesterday, the network started to distance itself from Breitbart. Andrew Morse, executive producer for ABC News Digital, issued a clearly defensive statement explaining that “Mr. Breitbart will not be a part of the ABC News broadcast coverage” and that his contribution will only be aired online at ABCNews.com and Facebook. ABC is clearly wavering. We need to put the pressure on so that they drop Breitbart entirely.
