Worker and Economic Rights at Risk


While Mitt Romney announces Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice presidential pick today, a politician who will tout the same failed policies that have benefited only their deep-pocketed donors, tens of thousands of working families will launch a campaign to demand elected leaders support an agenda that gives economic rights for all.

The rally for the middle class today is about people, not secret money. It stands for everyone, not just Wall Street. We’re fighting for our economic rights, for a more secure future for all of us.

The demand is simple. All of us should have a right to full employment and a living wage, full participation in the electoral process, a voice at work, quality education and a secure, healthy future.

All of these rights are vital to getting our country back on track and making it work for everyone, not just the Mitt Romneys and Paul Ryans of the world. But if you can’t be in Philly today, you still can get involved.

With the election only three months away, we need to start working together to hold politicians accountable for their votes on these issues and make sure they listen to us after November. Today, Mitt Romney doubled down on his drive to destroy the middle class by selecting Paul Ryan, someone who wants to end Medicare as we know it, kill jobs for working families, and give tax breaks to the rich.

President Obama in Cedar Rapids, Iowa: The McLaughlins and MiddleClass Tax Cuts

Before President Obama delivered remarks at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, he visited the home of Jason and Ali McLaughlin to discuss the need for Congress to extend the middle-class tax cuts that would prevent a tax hike on all families earning less than $250,000.
As a result of the tax cuts President Obama has already signed into law, the McLaughlin’s have received a total of about $4,900 in tax relief over the President’s first term. President Obama has committed to extend the middle class tax cuts that expire at the end of this year–if these tax cuts expired, the McLaughlins could face a tax increase of about $2,000.
In his speech, President Obama outlined his plan to build an economy from the middle out, not the top down, by ensuring hard work pays off and responsibility is rewarded, making critical investments in education and clean energy, and by reforming our tax system to restore middle class security and pay down our deficits in a balanced way.

You don’t need to visit WhiteHouse.gov. You don’t even need to be on Facebook or Twitter. Sharing the message can be as simple as hitting the forward button and sending it to three friends.

But an image like this can be really powerful over social networks. You post it, and one of your friends picks it up and shares it with her followers. A couple folks who follow her decide to do the same, and pretty soon, the message is seen by people all over the country.

If Congress passes President Obama’s plan, millions of responsible people will get some important relief. But too many people don’t know what’s at stake. And that’s where you come in.

Weekly Address: Congress Must Act on “To-Do List”

President Obama calls on Democrats and Republicans to come together and act on his Congressional “to-do list,” which will create jobs and help restore middle class security.

  Good afternoon –Most Americans are concerned that all we’ll see from Congress this year is inaction. Count me as one of those Americans.

But the fact is we need Congress. President Obama is doing everything in his power to move our economy forward. Not surprisingly though, the proposals with the biggest impact require legislation.

So at this make-or-break moment for the middle class, the President has called on Congress to move forward with a concrete plan that creates jobs and helps restore middle class security. It’s so simple, we’ve boiled it down into a five item to-do list.

It matters when Americans stand up and make their voices heard. Last year, when you spoke out about extending the payroll tax cut, we changed the debate here in Washington. Over the past few weeks, you answered the President’s call to speak up about stopping student loan interest rates from doubling, and now we’re starting to see the gears turning in the House and Senate.

The members of Congress who refuse to act are betting that Americans across the country won’t pay attention. So we’ve got to stay focused on the work at hand, and that starts with President Obama, who will be raising awareness across the country. You can join him by speaking out and sharing the list with your networks.

These five ideas will help create jobs and protect the middle class.

There are homeowners throughout the country who have done everything right, made their mortgage payments on time month after month, but when they look for relief, they get the runaround. With interest rates as low as they are right now, Congress should cut red tape for responsible homeowners to refinance and keep a little more money in their pocket each month.

There are a set of tax credits that are helping American companies put people to work developing clean energy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Unless Congress takes action, those credits will expire. That’s an unforced error, both for our economy and our environment.

Small business owners play a central role in our economy. Congress should provide firms that create new jobs or increase wages with a 10 percent income tax credit.

Lawmakers need to do more to help the men and women who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan find jobs once they come home. President Obama is asking Congress to create a Veterans Jobs Corps that will help them find work as police officers, firefighters, or as employees at our national parks.

We need to stop rewarding companies for sending jobs overseas. Congress needs to eliminate the loophole that allows corporations to deduct their expenses from outsourcing jobs and use that money to give a tax credit on moving expenses to companies that bring jobs back.

That’s it. It’s straightforward and entirely within Congress’s power to pass and send to the President for his signature.
