Making our Voices Heard … equal pay for equal work


Here’s something I can’t imagine:

Having to tell my daughter that she may not have the same opportunities as her brother because this country elected Mitt Romney as president.

But that’s what’s on the line in this election. It seems ridiculous to me that we’re even having this discussion in 2012, but here we are: We risk progress on equal pay for equal work. We’re looking at cutbacks in childcare programs and Head Start programs. We’ll lose access to affordable health care and additional funding for higher education.

If we don’t step up and make our voices heard, we’ll pay the price after Election Day.

I really am so proud of President Obama. I believe that he has made important changes and he’s moving the country in the right direction, but he needs more time — he needs four more years.

We can help him win this November, but we have to vote. We have to show up, and we have to bring our friends, our moms, our sisters, and our kids to the polls with us. With only 36 days left, we’re running out of time.

That’s why I’m doing whatever I can to help spread the word. The future for me and my kids deserves nothing less.

868,000 New Jobs … repost


Obama is in the Green on Job Creation

September Reports brought some unexpected good news from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the government agency that tracks all things jobs-related. During a scheduled review of its data, it determined that the economy had added hundreds of thousands more jobs than previously thought.

While getting overly fixated on individual jobs reports is unwise, this finding carries a special significance. This means that President Obama has now replaced all of the jobs lost early in his presidency — 800,000 jobs a month were being lost when he came into office — and is now in overall positive job creation territory. His leadership and policies have created a total of 868,000 new private sector jobs, which makes for 125,000 net new jobs once the loss of state and local government jobs killed by the Republican austerity is figured in.

ThinkProgress’ Pat Garafalo explains:

According to new revisions released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the economy created 386,000 more jobs between March 2011 and March 2012 than shown by previous estimates. As economist Justin Wolfers noted, this means that President Obama is now net positivefor job creation over his term in office, even taking into account the massive losses in January 2009:

The BLS benchmark revisions means that there has been a net jobs gain since Jan ’09. Romney can no longer talk about job losses under Obama.

BLS Benchmark revisions mean that over the year to March 2012, the economy was adding 194k jobs per month, not 162k as previously thought.

The Economist’s Greg Ip noted that the revisions mean that Obama’s net job creation number is now 125,000:

Incorporating today’s BLS revision, net payroll growth over Obama’s term would move from -261K to +125K.

The new numbers — which are based off of unemployment insurance reports that employers submit to the federal government — show that 453,000 more private sector jobs were created than shown by previous estimates, meaning Obama’s net private sector job creation total is now 868,000. Government jobs, meanwhile, shrank by an additional 67,000.

It’s also worth noting that Obama has already produced more new private sector jobs than his predecessor, George W. Bush. Bush ended both his first and second terms in the hole in terms of private sector job creation. Only significant increases in government employment allowed him to eek out a small overall net gain by the end of his two terms in office.

BOTTOM LINE: Ahead of next week’s critical first presidential debate, today’s news deprives Mitt Romney of one of his most frequently used talking points: that Obama has created no new jobs. While that talking point was always highly misleading at best, it is now a lie by any measure.

The Road Travelled …


I am writing to you not knowing what side of the political table you sit at hoping some of you will be voting for Barack Obama for a 2nd term. If not, so be it. I want you to know that I am fundraising for the Democratic Party . We have at least six weeks to go before Nov.6 there are fellow Americans participating in early voting as we speak. In some parts of the Country, Voter Suppression is rearing its ugly head. As a woman, mom, business owner and person of colour, I am beyond disheartened at what has transpired. I do not usually ask for money but given what Mr. Romney and Paul Ryan are offering. I have to step up and at least try to find people to stand up speak out and give Barack Obama a second term. I hope some of you feel this way as well.  So, I am formally asking for a Contribution to help the Democratic Party continue what we aspired and started in 2008 and was ignored by the Republican party who met the same night Barack was sworn in. Some in the Republican Party stated compromise was a dirty word while others turned toward race and fear in 2010; it was the turning point. The extreme right gained control and exacted out record numbers of filibustering as well as obstructing major legislation that would have shortened our recession.

I support Obama because he represents the bold and drastic changes we need NOW action not the lip service we received from the last administration. The President of the United States knows and understands we need to pay attention to our debt deficit, our environment, that we need to narrow the gap between the haves and have none and we all know we need better health-care.

Last, our future is our children and that means better educational opportunities…

Mitt Romney agreed it’s “fair” that millionaires and billionaires like himself pay a lower tax rate than many middle-class families do.

That’s not our spin — that’s straight from Romney. On “60 Minutes” this week, he actually agreed that it’s “fair” that he got to pay a lower tax rate on the millions he made last year than a worker making $50,000 paid. Why? “It’s the right way to encourage economic growth.”

As anyone who’s been paying attention over the past few decades knows, Romney is flat-out wrong. Tax breaks for millionaires and tax hikes for middle-class families lead to endless deficits, not economic growth or job creation. That’s why President Obama is fighting to ensure that millionaires like Romney pay their share

That leaves a lot of questions unanswered, but the tax returns he has released show that he benefits from loopholes in the tax code that give an advantage to millionaires and billionaires. So it’s no surprise that Romney doesn’t want to reform the tax code so that all Americans pay a fair share — he wants to keep rewarding millionaires and billionaires at the expense of the middle class.
