State senator: Gay marriage in Washington State ‘closer to reality’

In May of 2009 A Note from Dan Savage was sent … and a warning against Ref71, stating :

We need to take a stand for equality.

All of us. In Washington, committed same-sex couples and their families now enjoy the same legal protections granted to married couples under state law. The radical right just filed a referendum—Referendum 71—to repeal many of those protections and benefits.

In Washington, today, we need everyone who believes in equality to take a stand for civil rights and decline to sign the Referendum 71 petitions. Especially straight people.

Everyone.

Yes, a lot has been done since then but in this year of 2011
Washington State is still a few votes away from marriage
equality
. However, with news that the NYC State Senate approved gay
marriage
the article below offers hope for the people of Washington State
to finally move into the 21st century. I have to say the thing that came to my
mind is how much revenue NYC is about to see in the next few weeks, months and
years. It will be incredible for those in the Wedding Business as well as
anything associated. It is just one more state that is willing to see that old
habits can die because our youth just do not see life, love, and equality as
something that should only be legal for a select few. I think equality is a
right not a privilege and while some folks are slow, others should know that
they have to separate church from state and act according. Anyway, the article
below is from the SeattlePI blog

State sen.: Gay marriage in Wash. ‘closer to reality’

One of the architects of a law that gave broad rights to same-sex couples in Washington state says New York’s recognition of gay marriage will make it easier to pass similar legislation in the Evergreen State.

Murray

Late Friday the New York state Senate approved a gay marriage bill, which Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign. New York will become the sixth and largest state to recognize marriages between gay couples.

State Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, said in a statement that New York provides “momentum for the rest of the nation, including Washington, to follow suit.

“Over the past several years, the Legislature and the public together have been steadily building a bridge to equality for gay and lesbian families. Gay and lesbian families in Washington now enjoy the same state spousal rights that their married straight friends enjoy – except for the name ‘marriage’. Though we have yet to realize full marriage equality, with today’s vote that goal seems more achievable than it was yesterday and closer to reality than ever before.”

Murray helped pass Washington state’s original domestic partnership law in 2007, which provided inheritance rights in cases where there was no will, hospital visitation rights, the ability to authorize autopsies and organ donations.

In 2009, Murray and Rep. Jamie Pedersen, D-Seattle, were among the main proponents of the “everything but marriage” bill that passed the Legislature, greatly expanding the rights of same-sex couples to include things like workers’ compensation coverage, the right to use sick leave to care for a spouse, victims’ rights, including the right to receive notifications and benefits allowances. Business succession rights and legal process rights, such as the ability to sign certain documents, the requirement to join in certain petitions, rights to cause of action, and ability to transfer licenses without charge.

Rob McKenna’s $5.76 Billion Education Plan Flunks Basic Math

In his campaign announcement last Wednesday, Rob McKenna proposed $5.76 billion in new spending but left voters in the dark about how he would pay for it. He’s even relying on budget projections he repeatedly criticized just two months ago.

Rob McKenna: A Career Fighting Against Progress

Rob McKenna has announced his candidacy for Governor of our state, and we believe he would roll back years of progress that we’ve worked for in Washington. He has established a clear track record of rewarding conservative corporate interests and pandering to Tea Party extremists, all while trying to sound like a moderate in public. Check out our rapid response video exposing McKenna’s conservative record.

2011 Legislature: What happened?

2011 Legislature: What happened?

After nearly five months of regular and special session, the state Legislature finally passed a budget late last week and adjourned for the year. We’re not going to sugarcoat things – it was a very tough session. As progressives, we definitely took our lumps, especially on the budget.

But we also generated real hope for the future with a powerful, sustained wave of grassroots energy and an impressive level of collaboration among progressive groups. And we helped pass a few other sweet bills that make the budget a little easier to swallow. Click here for the rundown on some key legislation from this year.

Workers deserve paid sick leave!

Workers deserve paid sick leave!

The Seattle City Council is considering an ordinance that would give every worker the right to take sick leave without sacrificing wages. Workers would earn leave that could be used for preventative care, for sick days, or to care for a family member. Businesses also benefit from healthier, happier, more productive employees.

Tell Rob McKenna: Not in Washington!

Tell Rob McKenna: Not in Washington!

Attorney General Rob McKenna called unionization of teachers, firefighters, and other public employees unnecessary and “dangerous.” And last year he tried to block a voter-approved minimum wage increase. McKenna is the poster child for union busting conservatives and big corporations here in Washington, and his clear goal is to be our next governor.

Stop anti-LGBT groups from hijacking a day of prayer!

Texas Governor Rick Perry has invited the governors of all 50 states to join him for “The Response: A Call to Prayer for a Nation in Crisis” in Houston. The problem? The event is being sponsored by rabidly hateful anti-LGBT organizations, including the American Family Association (AFA), the International House of Prayer, and TheCall. Equality hangs in the balance. Will you tip the scales? … from HRC

I just got off the phone with HRC Board Member Bruce Bastian. He’s challenged HRC supporters to raise $100,000 – and he’ll match every dollar with one of his own.

He’s doing it because big things are happening here at HRC and all across the country – thanks to you. You’ve helped run ads and mobilize thousands of volunteers in an all-out blitz to win marriage equality in New York. You helped bring 250 pro-equality clergy members to Capitol Hill this week. And together we’ve sparked a new, national conversation about homophobia in sports.

But make no mistake. We could win in New York – or right-wing hatred could prevail. More sports stars could support equality – or more slurs could air on national TV. Speaker Boehner could stop spending tax dollars to defend discrimination in the DOMA case – or we could see a resurgence of discriminatory efforts in Congress.

It all depends on how quickly we can react to a crisis, on how skillfully we can fight when it counts – and on you.

www.hrc.org

Don’t miss this chance to double your impact – all gifts will be matched up to $100,000.

Look around. From TV sitcoms to professional sports, to new polls showing unprecedented support for equality – we’ve reached a tipping point in our culture.

After years of discrimination, when a single victory for LGBT equality was cause for hope, we are now in a place where it’s hate that’s out of place. And you’ve been at the center of that change. In just the past few months, look what you’ve accomplished:

•After an outcry from HRC supporters, a major law firm dropped its defense of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

•After HRC’s rapid-response campaign in major media outlets and on Twitter, all-star Kobe Bryant personally called me to apologize for calling a referee a “f***ing f***ot” in front of millions of young viewers – and the commissioner of the NBA fined him an unprecedented $100,000.

•Star athletes such as the NBA’s Steve Nash and the NHL’s Sean Avery have joined our “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign – the videos are everywhere from cable TV to New York City cabs right now – and when Avery was attacked for his brave stand, thousands of you spoke out in his defense.

•Mayors, governors, actors, past presidents and even George W. Bush’s daughter Barbara have all joined HRC’s campaign for marriage equality in New York.

And, for the first time ever, polls show a majority of Americans support marriage equality – not just civil unions.

These aren’t unconnected events. But this moment is only what we make of it. People like you generously funded ads, fueled outreach to prominent figures, and gave us the strength to respond to attacks without delay – and to seize this opportunity, we’ll need you again.

www.hrc.org

Don’t miss out: have your gift MATCHED in the next seven days.

We can create a sea change in our society – but we may still slip backward. I know that HRC supporters like you will be the deciding factor, and that we can count on you to fight.

Let’s tip the scales,

Joe Solmonese

President

New TV Ad

It’s a dead heat. In a race that is already dealing a major blow to Speaker Boehner and House Republicans’ extreme agenda to end Medicare, all the polls show that Democrat Kathy Hochul is charging into the lead in the New York special election.

Now, shadowy, right-wing special interest groups are dumping money into this deep-red district to avoid a shocking defeat. We can’t let the right-wing control the airwaves in the critical closing days of this election.

http://www.dccc.org/page/m/1d63ca8d/1b9dd8ab/4ab9cecb/4e0ce9ca/3694608018/VEsH/

Make no mistake: it’s because of your hard work fighting against the Republicans’ plan to end Medicare as we know it, that this deep-red district is now competitive.

The fact that we now have polls showing Democrat Kathy Hochul narrowly leading shows what a huge liability ending Medicare and protecting Big Oil has become for Republicans. Even Speaker Boehner himself was forced to rush up this weekend for an event to try and bail the Republican out. Now they’ve called in Karl Rove and his shadowy swift-boat group to dump in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Help us fight back against right-wing special interest attacks — Check out our new TV ad in the New York special election and contribute $3 or more to the DCCC today.

Don’t get me wrong, this is an uphill battle. This is a district that Carl Paladino, George Bush, and John McCain won despite losing big in the rest of New York. But we know that we have to go on offense to take back the majority and take the fight into their turf, even when it’s an uphill battle.

We owe it to ourselves to fight this fight and send a message loud and clear that Republicans completely overstepped on Medicare and are losing the independent voters and seniors who voted them into office last year. I hope you’ll join us in this fight. Contribute to the DCCC today >> http://www.dccc.org/page/m/1d63ca8d/1b9dd8ab/4ab9cecb/4e0ce9ca/3694608018/VEsC/

Thank you for your continued support,

Rep. Steve Israel

Paul Ryan‘s plan to kill Medicare is killing the Tea Party Republican majority in the House.

Right-wingers are running scared as poll after poll shows the vast majority of Americans oppose any cuts to Medicare — and now Republicans are falling behind in a special election in the most Republican congressional district in New York.

This is a Republican district — Barack Obama won New York State by 25 points in 2008 and still lost District 26.

Now, Democrat Kathy Hochul’s grassroots campaign has pulled ahead in the polls and the Republican establishment is throwing everything it has at her. Just yesterday, Karl Rove’s shady corporate front group American Crossroads announced they were dropping $650,000 into the district to prop up the right-wing Republican candidate.

Republicans took a majority saying they were going to create jobs. Instead, all they’ve done is attack American women, students, seniors and the poor — and the American people are sick of it.

www.democracyforamerica.com

The only thing that can beat big corporate money is people power — Please, contribute $10 to Kathy’s grassroots campaign right now and deliver a knock-out punch to a right-wing Republican in a red district.

The most recent poll has Kathy up just four points over the Republican candidate, so it’s going to be a tough fight in these final weeks. Believe me, Republicans across the country are watching this race. They know that if they can lose districts like NY-26 then they can lose the House in 2012.

But it’s not just Republicans watching. If Democrats win this seat by exposing the Republican plan to kill Medicare, they’ll be emboldened to go all out on offense defending it.

Your support today can make the difference. Now is the time to put Kathy over the top.

Contribute $10 now and help put an end to the Tea Party Republican majority.

The Republican attack on middle class families in Washington DC, in Wisconsin and across the country is backfiring on them. Join Kathy’s campaign today and we can really turn the heat up on them.

Thank you everything you do.
