Last week 2,260 delegates from all 50 states elected Mitt Romney to represent their party in this election. Yet at the same time the Republican party is talking about freedom and American values, it is doing everything it can to make it harder for Black folks to exercise their right to vote.1

In Ohio, Secretary of State Jon Husted has eliminated weekend access to polls, an option that was exercised by Black voters in past elections.2 In Pennsylvania, Republicans pushed through a law requiring specific forms of restrictive photo identification to vote, a constraint that systematically pushes Black and low-income voters out of the system.3 In Florida, Republican Gov. Rick Scott has overseen a sweeping voter purge that has erased hundreds – if not thousands – of lawful citizens from the voter rolls.4

That’s why we’re launching an Emergency Black Voter Fund. Can you chip in $12 a month until election day, to create a fighting fund to help make sure that these attacks on our right to vote don’t go unanswered. Can you spare $12 a month?

With your help we will register thousands of new Black voters and prepare them to have everything they need to vote on Election Day. We will also launch rapid response media campaigns in key states like Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio to fight back against conservative attempts to make it harder for Black folks to vote.

The Republican machine has invested millions to keep us from voting.5 This will take significant resources, which is why we don’t have a minute to lose. My son, Paul, will die without a heart transplant. But the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania refuses to put him on the transplant list — because he’s autistic.

Paul is only 23, and he’s amazing. He was diagnosed with a deadly heart condition four years ago, but he battles through it with a smile. He’s smart and creative — we just self-published a story he wrote, and he’s working on a sequel. He loves his nephews. And the whole family loves him.

I don’t know how to tell my son that his doctors refuse to give him the operation that could save his life.

I promised Paul that I would fight for him with every breath, no matter what it takes. But I’m afraid my voice alone isn’t enough. I started a petition on Change.org asking the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to put my son on the transplant list — will you sign?

Paul’s doctor says one of the reasons he doesn’t qualify for a transplant is that he can’t name all the medications he’s on. This is ridiculous, because Paul takes 19 medications. My son has faced discrimination because of his autism all his life, but this time, that discrimination could kill him.

I was devastated when I found out the hospital wouldn’t help Paul — it was the worst moment any mother could imagine. But then I read about another mom who got her mentally disabled daughter on the list for a life-saving kidney transplant after more than 50,000 people signed her petition on Change.org. That’s what inspired me to start my petition for Paul. I know that if enough people sign my petition, the hospital will give my son a chance to survive.

Please sign my petition asking the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to put my son, Paul, on the list for a heart transplant that could save his life.

Dear Carmen:It could be a matter of life or death.When a student with diabetes has an emergency in school, and no one is there to help when they need insulin, time is of the essence to get them the urgent carethey need.Many of the more than 200,000 children with diabetes in this country have no support system in school when they need insulin or face a diabetes emergency. Without good daily care for their diabetes, these children face serious long-term health issues including blindness, heart disease, amputation and even death.

Keep Them Safe at School - Sign the PledgeHowever, some states and school systems claim that only a school nurse can help a child with their diabetes care at school. What happens when a nurse isn’t available to help that child in a severe blood glucose emergency?

Help ensure all children with diabetes are protected at school by signing our pledge to keep them safe.

Not only do some schools fail to provide a medically safe environment in which kids with diabetes can learn … they also reject these same children by telling them that they are not welcome to attend their local school.

That’s why the American Diabetes Association’s Safe at School campaign is dedicated to making sure all students with diabetes have the care they need to learn and be healthy. We are working with parents, health care professionals and school personnel across the country to make sure children with diabetes have the fundamental care they need so they aren’t placed in life threatening situations. And we’re fighting to make sure that these children are being treated fairly and have the same educational opportunities as their classmates.

In fact, we’ve already won victories for children with diabetes in many states. But we’re still fighting in places like California and Pennsylvania where kids are placed at risk each and every day.

Please speak up on behalf of these children by signing the pledge to help make sure children with diabetes have the care they need to keep them safe.
