House Republicans are holding govt hostage, again


Here’s the latest:

Boehner, Cantor, and House Republicans are once again holding our government hostage — this time over disaster aid for victims of Hurricane Irene and devastating fires across the western U.S.

We’ve all seen what can happen when Republicans get their hands on FEMA. Now they are intent on setting a dangerous precedent that victims of natural disasters are fair game as political bargaining chips. It’s appalling.

 FEMA is expected to run out of disaster relief funds early next week so we must act quickly. The entire government will run out of funds just a few days later.

When our friends and neighbors see their lives turned upside down by hurricanes or tornadoes, we should stand by them. Their hardship should never be used as an opportunity for Republicans to score points with their Tea Party base.

What’s so important that Boehner, Cantor, and House Republicans are threatening to hold up assistance for victims of natural disasters and shut down the federal government?

House Republicans want to strip funding for a green energy loan program that’s created or saved 41,000 jobs.

Instead of heeding President Obama’s call to create jobs, House Republicans have presented us with a callous choice: put more Americans out of work in this tough economy or risk a government shutdown and delay of critically-needed funding for disaster victims.

I reject that choice. Will you stand with us?

Congress: the Republican led House holds 21st Century JOBs&FEMA funds Hostage – the Senate debates/votes HR2608


the Senate Convenes: 3:30pmET September 26, 2011

  • Following any Leader remarks, the Senate will be in a period of morning
    business until 4:30pm with Senators permitted to speak therein for up to 10
    minutes each.
  • Following morning business, the Senate will resume consideration of the
    motion to concur in the House message to accompany H.R.2608 with an amendment,
    which is a 6-week continuing resolution with the time until 5:30pm equally
    divided and controlled between the two Leaders or their designees.
  • The filing deadline for second degree amendments to the motion to concur in
    the House message to accompany H.R.2608 is at 5:00pm on Monday.
  • At approximately 5:30pm, there will be a roll call vote on the motion to invoke
    cloture on the Reid motion to concur in the House message to accompany H.R.2608
    with the Reid amendment #656, the continuing resolution.

The filing deadline for second degree amendments to the motion to concur in the
House message to accompany H.R.2608 is at 5:00pm today, Monday, September 26th.

If your Senator has a germane 2nd degree amendment
and would like to preserve his or her right to offer, please send a signed copy
of the amendment to the cloakroom prior to the deadline so that we may file it
for you.  If you have already filed, there is no need to re-file.

The Reid motion to concur in the House message to accompany H.R.2608 with the
Reid amendment #665 (clean 6-week continuing resolution) was agreed to by a vote
of 79-12.

There will be no further roll call votes this week.  The next roll call vote
is expected on Monday, October 3rd.

News just broke that a major Tea Party organization has created a new “Super PAC” to elect extreme right-wing candidates like Rand Paul and Jim DeMint. I put together a quick memo below about the major threat this poses to our 2012 plans.

This is a huge development that we will watch closely. But we can’t take them on unless everyone pitches in before this deadline.

Please contribute $5 to fight against this extreme group before midnight Sept. 30. Meeting this goal just got a lot more crucial to keeping the Tea Party from taking over the Senate.

TO: Grassroots Activists

PROBLEM: Yesterday, a major Tea Party group announced the launch of a SuperPAC, “FreedomWorks for America.” This group is planning a $20 million campaign dedicated to electing candidates in the mold of Jim DeMint and Rand Paul. They could spend even more. Thanks to the Citizens United decision, this PAC can spend unlimited money attacking our candidates.

THIS IS DIFFERENT: Unlike many other organizations, this well-funded group will focus on the most extreme, right-wing candidates. In fact, the PAC is already pledging support for Tea Party-Republican Senate candidates in Texas, Arizona and Florida.

IF THEY WIN: The Tea Party takes over the Senate, just like the House. The current Senate firewall blocking their dangerous agenda would be gone. Led by FreedomWorks’ new senators, they would end Medicare, privatize Medicaid, stop unemployment benefits, repeal health care reform, roll back civil rights, and shutter the EPA.

HOW WE WIN: Fulfill every fundraising goal, especially the one coming at midnight on Sept. 30. It’s the only way we can fight them head-to-head in every state. Otherwise, we hand over states – and likely the majority – to the GOP.

WHY: Because the DSCC is currently protecting 23 seats, under a razor-thin four-seat majority. We have to meet monthly budgets to stay ahead of the Republicans. Also, if the GOP gains a fundraising advantage, it can create runaway momentum before campaign season even starts.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: More than 90% of the DSCC’s contributions come from grassroots supporters. We absolutely can’t hold the Senate without your help. Please give $5, $10 or whatever you can. We still need to raise $465,000 by midnight Friday to stop the Tea Party takeover.   WWW.DSCC.ORG

Try not to burst into tears when you read this:

Tea Party Republican Congressman John Fleming would have a rough go of it under President Obama’s new plan to make millionaires pay their fair share. In fact, he told MSNBC yesterday — and these are his words — “by the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over.”

Must be tough. Let’s make his life tougher.

If committed Democrats in Seattle and across the country chip in $4 before our big reporting deadline to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on September 30th, we’ll have the grassroots strength to support President Obama’s plan and kick out-of-touch Republicans like John Fleming out of Congress.

September 30th will be the first FEC fundraising deadline since the President introduced his American Jobs Act to put people back to work, protect middle-class tax cuts in this tough time, and ensure that millionaires and Big Oil companies are paying their fair share.

As President Obama put it yesterday, “This is not class warfare. It’s math.” It’s unfair to ask seniors to give up the Medicare benefits they have earned while multi-millionaires pay taxes at lower rates than secretaries.

The world will be watching our fundraising totals on September 30th to determine whether Democrats are united behind President Obama’s plan. We must have a powerful showing.

Republicans say NO NO NO


Let me sum up this week for you:

President Obama: JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.
        The Republican Party: NO, NO, NO.

President Obama presented his plan. The only plan Republicans have put forward is to say no to President Obama and yes to big corporations calling the shots, undermining the social safety net we pay for with our taxes, and, if you get sick: you’re on your own. In short: their plan is an assault on our values.

Their vision is dangerous – and we’re in danger of it becoming reality if Republicans flip just FOUR Senate seats in 2012. We can’t let that happen.

        That’s why the DSCC needs your help to raise $585,000 before Sept. 30 so we can make sure Democrats don’t lose races that we can win. We literally can’t afford to fall short.

Please give $5, $10 or whatever you can give to the DSCC right now. The DSCC has only 10 days to raise $585,000 and fight the GOP’s assault on our values.

Rick Perry calls Social Security a “Ponzi scheme” and Mitt Romney compares it to a criminal enterprise. And now one GOP Congressman is complaining that President Obama’s plan would force him to live on just $400,000 a year.  Once again the GOP just doesn’t understand the challenges Americans are facing today.

2012 will decide whether we focus on creating jobs, like Democrats want, or protecting millionaires and big corporations, like Republicans demand. We can win.  But we need your help.
