We surprised Florida lawmakers on Monday by dropping off 12,000 postcards at their doorstep with a powerful message: No guns in our schools — period.

I flew to Tallahassee for this event because this fight is personal for me. My son, Christopher, was shot and killed near UC Santa Barbara last year. I was honored to stand with dozens of other parents this week and ask lawmakers to keep our schools and campus communities safe.

More than a dozen TV stations and newspapers covered the TV ad we’re airing across Florida.

In total, the NRA is pushing bills in 24 states that would allow guns on college and university campuses and in K-12 schools. It’s part of their “guns everywhere, for anyone” vision for our country and frankly, it’s Crazytown.

These bills put the safety of our kids and communities at risk — so Everytown and Moms Demand Action are wasting no time fighting back.

Scalise under fire

Republicans claimed their obstruction was due to not having a majority in Congress to accomplish their priorities. But even with control of the House and Senate, Republicans have done nothing to move our country forward.

And what they have done will upset you. Take a look:

They’ve pushed a backwards, partisan agenda — including taking us to the brink of shutting down the Department of Homeland Security.

There’s no appeasing the gun lobby.

Extreme Risk Protection Orders was exactly the kind of bill the gun lobby and their allies in the Legislature said they could support.

It was bipartisan. It was about keeping guns out of the hands of those most at risk of perpetrating the next mass shooting – those experiencing a mental health crisis. It addressed all of the Second Amendment concerns raised by the gun lobby. And it did nothing to infringe on the rights of stable, law-abiding citizens.

Yet, despite widespread support – and despite admitting that the bill could prevent tragedies – elected leaders in the Legislature conspired with the gun lobby to kill the bill. And they succeeded.

No matter how many hurdles the bill cleared, House Majority Leader Pat Sullivan and his allies found a way to block it at every turn. And Speaker Frank Chopp could do nothing to stop it.

The politicians in Olympia have failed the people of Washington again. They have failed the victims and survivors of gun violence. This is a shameful betrayal – and not one we take lightly.
