The Shutdown was a Symptom

Media Matters for America

“There can be no liberty for a community which lacks the means by which to detect lies.” – journalist Walter Lippmann. As long as the conservative media machine pushes lie after lie upon its viewers, symptoms like the shutdown will keep happening.

Were They Even Paying Attention?

The Republican government shutdown of 2013 has caused at least $24 billion worth of damage to the American economy. How does Fox News respond to that? By pretending the damage doesn’t exist: http://mm4a.org/1aPendT Related: On Sunday, Megyn Kelly declared that Fox News does not lean right: http://mm4a.org/1gCvLY4 By Wednesday, Kelly was openly advocating the Republican position on the debt: http://mm4a.org/1cvp6wh

It’s Never Them, Is it?

In the wake of the failure of the radical shutdown strategy, conservatives whined that the strategy they advocated for didn’t fail, — they were betrayed. http://mm4a.org/19PJ988 Related: How did we even get here? If you’re looking for one man to blame, blame Rush Limbaugh: http://mm4a.org/17kGL5h

Treating Opinions As Facts

Schoolchildren do not get to claim that their wrong answers on a math test are just their opinions. And yet, that’s the same logic the news media uses when mainstreaming climate lies. The latest outlet to fall for this is USA Today. Shauna Theel explains their error: http://mm4a.org/19LK9u1

Where Are The Iraq Boosters Today?

On the 10-year anniversary of the Iraq War, we look back at some of the most prominent war advocates in the media. Instead of facing consequences for their poor analysis, these media figures continue to hold positions of influence. http://mm4a.org/ZsbM5n

What Is Roger Ailes Afraid Of?

Fox News President Roger Ailes has a new biography out, entitle Off Camera, and author Zev Chafets has become a tool of the Fox PR machine as he conflates Ailes’ seemingly laudable personal qualities with his poor professional conduct. David Brock and Ari Rabin-Havt explore how this book is a microcosm of all the biggest problems with Fox News. http://mm4a.org/14cIi08

Fox Ignores Its Smear Campaign Falling Apart

Fox News was happy to run with the Daily Caller‘s smear campaign against Robert Menendez when it first broke. But as the story has collapsed, Fox has failed to correct the record. This is journalism Fox News style – cover the smear campaign pushed by a discredited outlet, ignore it when the story falls apart. http://mm4a.org/XZw4q5

Rush Limbaugh Vs. Republican Rebranding

On the same day the Republican Party announced that it wanted to reach out to minorities, Limbaugh compared Hispanic Labor nominee Thomas Perez to a KKK member. Simon Maloy explores the limits of Republican rebranding with Rush Limbaugh still around: http://mm4a.org/WzlwL2

Green Jobs Are Growing

Fox News and right-wing media have spent years attacking green jobs. But a new report shows that private sector green jobs are on the rise – from manufacturing to construction and other sectors of the economy.. Jill Fitzsimmons breaks down the job growth: http://mm4a.org/YXO7Ka

FOX PANEL ATTACKS ELIZABETH WARREN

A Fox Business panel took Elizabeth Warren wildly out of context on minimum wage. But the facts support Warren because even as worker productivity has grown, wages have been stagnant. http://mm4a.org/15YVrIn

Why Iraq War Boosters Matter 10 Years Later

designed to intimidate voters …

Billboards like this are popping up in Black neighborhoods.Cleveland Voter Fraud BillboardDemand Clear Channel remove them.

Join Us

It’s one of the nastiest voter suppression schemes we’ve seen: This week, in Black and Latino neighborhoods in Ohio and Wisconsin, an anonymous group started running outrageous billboards that try to scare people away from voting.1

Allowing an anonymous advertiser to create an atmosphere of fear around voting just as the early voting period begins is unacceptable. Please join us in demanding that Clear Channel immediately take down these offensive and dangerous billboards (and please ask your friends and family to do the same):

http://act.colorofchange.org/sign/billboards

These billboards are clearly designed to intimidate voters, and they’re part of a coordinated right-wing attack on the voting rights of people of color. The billboards are hosted by Clear Channel, a media conglomerate owned by Bain Capital — the same company that Mitt Romney co-founded.2 Clear Channel has tried to avoid any responsibility for the ads, saying that the group who paid for them is responsible for the content. But Clear Channel has rejected billboard ads many times in the past.3,4,5

The myth of widespread “voter fraud” has been used to justify voter suppression efforts again and again. As a result, we’ve seen new restrictions on voting and voter registration, including discriminatory voter ID laws and voter roll purges. The fact is that voter fraud rarely occurs. In fact, voter fraud happens as infrequently as death by lightning.6

Clear Channel syndicates some of our country’s most conservative commentators like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and now it is allowing the myth of voter fraud to intimidate Black and Latino voters. Please join us in demanding that Clear Channel immediately remove the billboards, it only takes a moment.

a message from .. NARAL Pro-Choice America

NARAL Pro-Choice America

Rush Limbaugh is at it again.

He came to Mitt Romney’s defense by calling NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood “death squads.”

Tell Romney a real leader would stand up to a bully like Limbaugh.

We’ve all heard about Rush Limbaugh’s rants attacking strong women. Thanks to pro-choice people like you, he faced an onslaught of criticism for his offensive language against Sandra Fluke.

Well, he is at it again.

Yesterday, he came to Mitt Romney’s defense by calling NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood “death squads.”

First, he claimed that the “Democrats [are] funded and underwritten by Planned Parenthood and NARAL,” and then said, “If they’re not death squads, I don’t know what is.”1

Limbaugh’s inflammatory rhetoric is outrageous and needs to be condemned. Join me in calling on Romney to stand up to Limbaugh’s remarks.

It’s alarming that a politician who is running for the highest office in the nation fails to address Limbaugh head on.

When Limbaugh went after Sandra Fluke, Mitt Romney refused to call for Limbaugh to apologize. Instead, Romney cowardly said, “it’s not the language I would have used.”2

Will Romney duck Limbaugh’s incendiary language a second time?

Tell Romney that a real leader would stand up to a bully like Limbaugh. Make sure he knows that when he refuses to denounce Limbaugh for his offensive language, he fails women.

We’re not going to let these outrageous attacks on women’s freedom and privacy go unanswered.

In solidarity,

Nancy Keenan
