President Obama Delivers a Statement on the Shooting in South Carolina

On Wednesday night, a gunman opened fire at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people including pastor and state senator Clementa Pinckney. The Department of Justice is opening a hate crime investigation into this tragedy, and yesterday morning, the President gave a statement on the tragedy from the White House Briefing Room.

United Salad Co., the distributor of Portland, Oregon, is initiating a voluntary recall of Champ’s Sliced Crimini Mushrooms, product of Canada, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Frontiere Natural Meats, LLC, a Denver, Colorado establishment, is recalling 1,640 pounds of ground elk meat that may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. Coli O157:H7). E. coli O157:H7 causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
