Chicken of the Sea’s Recipe for Disaster … Casson Trenor, Greenpeace

Take a random floating object, attach a radio beacon to it, and drop it in the ocean. Let it soak for a few weeks, then come back with a giant net and scoop up everything in sight.

That’s how Chicken of the Sea catches tuna — a deadly combination of fish aggregating devices (FADs) and massive seine nets. This indiscriminate practice is causing tremendous harm to our oceans, including the needless deaths of tens of thousands of sharks, rays, and baby tuna every year.

We launched our campaign to get Chicken of the Sea to clean up their act back in August with a video by Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Mark Fiore. That video received such a strong response from the company and the rest of the tuna industry that we decided to make another. This time, we’re taking a closer look at their destructive practices, and offering indisputable evidence of their activities: actual footage of FAD-driven carnage on the high seas.

Help us keep the pressure on and check it out. Our goal is to hit 25,000 views in the first 48 hours.Simply click on the image below to watch the video and be sure to share it on Facebook and Twitter after you’ve watched it…

Chicken of the Sea's Recipe for Disaster

Chicken of the Sea and the entire tuna industry is scared. They’re scared that the public is going to find out the truth about what they are doing. So they’ve spent the last couple of months and untold amounts of money hiring expensive PR firms to attack Greenpeace, hoping that this will distract the public and confuse the issue.

But each and every person who watches this video and becomes aware of our campaign makes it a little bit harder for them to hide the truth. Take a moment and watch it yourself and then pass it along on Facebook and Twitter.

For the oceans,

Casson Trenor
Greenpeace Senior Markets Campaigner

Victory for Dixie Mitchell … Ian Pajer-Rogers New Bottom Line

JOIN THE NEW BOTTOM LINE >>> www.newbottomline.com

Thank everyone for signing this petition from The New Bottom Line to help Dixie Mitchell keep her home, which was scheduled to be auctioned off on October 28th.

Last week, we delivered over 7,000 petition signatures and Dixie’s loan modification paperwork to Ocwen Financial in Florida, while Dixie’s supporters rallied outside of her Seattle home. Dixie’s story earned tons of media coverage in Seattle and Dixie also went on Up with Chris Hayes on MSNBC to talk about her case.

All the hard work finally paid off. On Friday, Dixie received a call from Ocwen offering her the loan modification that will save her home.http://www.newbottomline.com/victory_for_dixie_mitchell

This after years of Dixie fighting just to get Ocwen to look at the paperwork. It’s a testament to what can happen when people organize to hold corporations and big banks accountable to regular Americans.

While Dixie can now rest easy knowing that her home is safe, millions of other Americans are not so fortunate. The New Bottom Line is made up of dozens of local progressive, faith-based, and community groups in 27 states nationwide. We are committed to fighting for an economy that works for all Americans and are particularly focused on elevating low-income communities that were hardest hit by the financial crisis.

In this exciting time where the 99% is finding a powerful voice, join The New Bottom Line to stay up to date on all the action –whether it’s 40 Robin Hoods paddling down the Chicago River or a divestment campaign that you organize in your community– The New Bottom Line is at the forefront of fighting for an economy that works for all of us.

Thanks so much for your action.

Tweet at your Republicans in Congress as well… #PASSTHEBILL #theAmericansJOBSACT

Democrats in the Senate tried to pass a simple piece of President Obama’s jobs plan that shouldn’t be controversial: provide money to prevent further layoffs of teachers, cops, and firefighters at the local level, and pay for it by taxing the income of millionaires an extra 0.5%.

This morning a lot of media outlets reported that the Senate “rejected” or “voted down” this proposal.

But that’s not what happened. The measure didn’t come to an actual vote.

That’s because every single Republican senator filibustered the bill — meaning they wouldn’t even let an up-or-down vote happen. Republicans have unilaterally decided not to allow even that simple majority vote on anything that might help the economy before the next election.

To be clear: This bill would have created jobs, and both parties have supported similar measures in the past.

But, sadly, some in the Congress do not feel any responsibility to act. As someone who has spent a lot of time working in and with the Senate, I can tell you that it’s a particularly low moment for the legislative branch of our government.

It doesn’t need to be this way. That’s why the President and our campaign are focused on fixing what’s broken in Washington. Right now, that means we’re going to keep the pressure on Congress to act, until every single piece of the President’s jobs plan — the parts to help veterans find jobs and get small businesses hiring more people — gets a vote.

So please, reach out and keep reaching out to Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, and ask him to give each piece of the American  Jobs Act a fair vote.

You can reach his office at (202) 224-2541.

Call now — then let us know how it went.

If you’re on Twitter, be sure to tweet at your Republicans in Congress as well.

We’ll have more on this soon.

Black is Beautiful …The Black Institute

tumblr_liqfpfNxmE1qezdspo1_400.jpegThe historic 1940’s doll experiment showed that Black children overwhelmingly preferred white dolls to black dolls, and that this preference sprung from a feeling that the white dolls were good and pretty, while the black dolls were bad and ugly.

In 2005, 17-year-old film student, Kiri Davis, of Manhattan’s Urban Academy duplicated the doll experiment to see how much, if anything had changed regarding children’s perceptions when it comes to skin color and value.
