Progressive Radio NorthWest, PRNW ~~~ the Other Washington

mapofWashingtonstate

Our small Progressive Radio Seattle Team is expanding with new people bringing new ideas and options to the table.

For starters, the Team decided on a name change: We are now Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW). We’ve heard from enthusiastic progressive radio listeners from every corner of the region and wanted our name to reflect the scope and intensity of the public commitment to bring progressive talk BACK to free public airwaves and beyond.

Here are some activities coming up where you can help spread the word about PRNW: (and have some fun):

· Hempfest (http://www.hempfest.org/) is this weekend and it would be great to have a team of progressive radio enthusiasts on hand to pass out some oversized postcards we’ve created headlined, “Don’t let progressive radio go up in smoke!” We need someone to coordinate the effort and folks to hand out the cards on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Let us know your preference. Respond to the progressiveradionorthwest email below with “Hempfest” in the subject line if you can participate.

· Northwest Progressive Institute Tenth Anniversary Picnic, next Thursday, August 22.

Celebrate NPI’s first decade as you enjoy games, music and some serious picnic eats. King County Executive Dow Constantine and Port Commissioner Courtney Gregoire are scheduled to speak. You do not need to bring your own food, but bring lawn chairs or blankets or whatever you’d like to be comfortable. Thanks to all who already signed up to volunteer at the PRNW table – we’ll be handing out information about progressive radio.

EVERYONE is welcome to come enjoy the picnic: Thursday, August 22, 4:30 to 7:30 pm, Perrigo Park, 9011 196th Avenue NE, Redmond, Washington 98053. For information: http://www.nwprogressive.org

Our web site is almost ready: Thanks to the hard work and talents of our volunteer webmeister, Rennie Sawade, an area software engineer and web developer, our web site is almost ready for prime time. Check out Rennie’s Twitter feed @ProgressiveGeek or visit http://www.progressivegeek.com/

Please send your responses and comments to: Progressive Radio Northwest Team, progressiveradionorthwest@gmail.com

We cannot deny it …

The Climate Reality Project

You’ve heard it before.

“Climate change isn’t happening at all.” “You can’t prove that the world is getting warmer.”

Big Oil and Big Coal love these myths. But that’s exactly what they are: myths.

This month, The Climate Reality Project plans to destroy myths like these once and for all. And we need your help to do it. We’re turning the heat up on anti-science deniers in the fossil fuel industry and beyond with our Put the Heat on Denial campaign.

And we’re starting by debunking the myth that climate change isn’t happening.

It’s August and summer is coming to an end, but do you know what? Temperatures keep rising around the world – and there’s no denying it. But Big Oil and Big Coal are doing their best, spending big money to spread big doubt about climate change.

So this week, we need your help to destroy the myth that climate change isn’t happening – because you and I both know it is. Make the deniers feel the heat with some cold, hard facts. We’ve put the key science at your fingertips at RealityDrop.org, so you can set things straight whenever you see online articles repeating denier myths.

So please join Reality Drop and debunk the “It’s not happening” myth. Your voice is so important to spread truth and put the heat on denial.

Thanks for all your hard work,
The Climate Reality Project Team

P.S. Use Twitter to help spread the word about our Put the Heat on Denial campaign – and use the hash tag #HeatOnDenial. Thanks again.

by Casson Trenor, Greenpeace … this is a repost from 2013, but still valid

Casson Trenor, scored 26,840 points on our new 8-bit online video game Shark Vs. Mermaid Death Squad.

Though that’s not the only milestone I’m celebrating.

Last week, the game was shared with its 2 millionth viewer. When it first launched, we got the attention of a whole new audience. People like Jared Leto and Mark Bittman tweeted about it. Gaming sites like  Gawker and Vice were writing about. I’m not gonna lie, the game is  pretty cool. Check it out for yourself.

But this game isn’t about attracting celebrities. It’s about something much bigger.

If we don’t change how the tuna industry operates, it will be Game Over for our oceans. Overfishing runs rampant in all oceans from the Pacific to the Indian,  and countless animals such as sharks, sea turtles, rays and other marine life are killed every year due to the destructive fishing practices of  the global tuna industry.

We designed the game to highlight the unsustainable fishing practices of the three major U.S. tuna brands, Chicken of the Sea, Starkist, and Bumble Bee. The industry has used a lot of fancy PR tactics to stop Greenpeace from exposing the truth about how it runs its business. So we came up with a new tactic of our own to get the message out.

Play Shark vs Mermaid Death Squad now and see if you can beat my high score.

Don’t worry about running out of lives either. When you share the game with  your friends on Facebook and Twitter you’ll earn a new life. Email the  company, and earn two more. Trust me, it ain’t easy being a sea turtle  or shark these days. Until things start change, you’re going to need  those extra lives.

Have fun outrunning the tuna industry death squad and know that you are  helping to bring attention to a critical issue at the same time.

For the oceans,

Casson Trenor Greenpeace Senior Markets Campaigner

P.S. Play our new online video game and help bring attention to the destructive fishing practices of the tuna industry.

What Conservatives Don’t Get

Media Matters for America Facebook Twitter
“A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned to walk forward.” Never has that phrase by Franklin D. Roosevelt seemed more apt than when reading the economic musings of the Wall Street Journal editorial page.

Spending And The Economy

Economists are clear: decreased government spending is the primary culprit behind the slow economy. And experts are still calling for more infrastructure investment to prevent another bridge collapse like the 2007 one in Minneapolis. Albert Kleine fisks the WSJ‘s editorial page to show how economic growth and better jobs growth are possible in the wake of President Obama’s economic speech. http://mm4a.org/13dR749

What To Know About Detroit

Detroit filed for bankruptcy recently. While conservatives are reflexively blaming Obama for the city’s troubles, Joe Strupp spoke with Detroit reporters to get an actual picture of what led to this. http://mm4a.org/17DggJR Related: Fox thinks Detroit is a sign of things to come; Albert Kleine and Craig Harrington spoke with economist Jared Bernstein about why Detroit is a rare case: http://mm4a.org/1aYByXL

A lot of what Bill O’Reilly has said about race is wrong. Chris Hayes took on O’Reilly’s “super racist rant” — and it’s well worth five minutes of your time. http://mm4a.org/140I4U0

The Minimum Wage Hasn’t Increased In Four Years; What You Need To Know

A new Media Matters analysis finds that Reuters climate coverage declined under Managing Editor Paul Ingrassia, a self-described “skeptic.” This comes after Reuters’ previous climate change corresspondant claimed that Ingrassia was killing stories.
