(and get your FREE sticker!)

Take the Challenge

Don’t you want to be the coolest and smartest of all your friends? Our first 20 days are almost up! What are you waiting for? Join the first round of our 20/20/20 challenge—20 ways to get cooler and smarter, and in just 20 days you’ll be on the path to 20 percent fewer carbon emissions.
Thousands of people have already committed to reducing their global warming-causing carbon emissions by making changes to their diets, their commutes, and their lightbulbs—and that adds up to a serious positive impact for the planet.
Even if you already live a cooler smarter lifestyle than most Americans, you still have the power to make important changes—I know I did. Since I am lucky enough to live in a city with great public transportation and don’t use a car most days, I looked to my home for ways to save energy. I was able to reduce my carbon emissions 20 percent by updating my furnace (which quickly paid for itself), insulating the walls, installing a programmable thermostat, and making other small adjustments around the house.
Choose which carbon-saving tips best fit your life by taking the 20/20/20 challenge today. Then imagine if 20 of your friends do it… or 20,000… or 200 million… we’re talking serious impact!
Join the 20/20/20 challenge and get tips on how best to fight global warming in your life (plus a FREE sticker – while they last).
One person can have an impact—and we’ve got the science to prove it. After two years of research and analysis, our scientists have discovered the most effective ways to reduce carbon emissions. And we’ve made it easy for you to get on the path to 20 percent less carbon in 20 days.

What It Takes to Live on Minimum Wage …Joan Entmacher, National Women’s Law Center

Help Us Raise the Minimum Wage
Share your story about what it takes for women and families to live on the minimum wage.
Share Your Story

$14,500.
That is what a woman makes working full time for a full year at the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.
That’s right — only $14,500 a year, which is below the federal poverty line for a family of three. For tipped workers, the federal minimum cash wage is only $2.13 an hour! And nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers and tipped workers are women.
We want to increase the minimum wage for all workers, including tipped workers, to give working families a boost and help close the wage gap.
But we can’t do it without your help. We want to hear about what it takes to live on minimum wage from women who’ve experienced it.
If you have a story to share, could you share it with us — or forward this message along to someone who might?
Around the country, families — especially those headed by women — are struggling to make ends meet. We want to make sure that legislators know EXACTLY what the stakes are. Women who work for the minimum wage do tough jobs — and deserve a raise!
Please share your story today, and stay tuned for more opportunities to join us as we ramp up our efforts to increase the federal minimum wage!
Sincerely,

Joan Entmacher Joan Entmacher Vice President, Family Economic Security National Women’s Law Center

VIDEO: Will The Supreme Court Side With Justice Over Racism?

The United States Supreme Court is hearing arguments in Arizona v. United States, the Obama administration‘s challenge to Arizona’s anti-immigration law, SB1070. What they won’t be hearing is what and who has fueled this discriminatory legislation.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is one of the most dangerous groups in the country.
Along with like groups in the John Tanton network FAIR has written and pushed laws like SB1070.
Will justice triumph over racial profiling and discrimination fueled by supremacist and nativist fringe groups?

We need to stand together in this most pressing time.
Take a stand against FAIR! Sign the pledge and show that we will not tolerate justice being trampled by racism!

Pesticides are killing bees

Pesticides are killing bees and threatening our food supply. In 24 hours, shareholders at the biggest chemical producer, Bayer, could vote to stop their toxic production. Massive public pressure has forced this debate at their Annual General Meeting, now let’s make sure they vote to stop the pesticides and save the bees. Sign the emergency petition:

Quietly, globally, billions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and food. But if Bayer stops selling one group of pesticides, we could save bees from extinction.

Four European countries have begun banning these poisons, and some bee populations are already recovering. But Bayer, the largest producer of neonicotinoids, has lobbied hard to keep them on the market. Now, massive global pressure from Avaaz and others has forced them to consider the facts — and in 24 hours, Bayer shareholders will vote on a motion that could stop these toxic chemicals. Let’s all act now and shame the shareholders to stop killing bees.

The pressure is working, and this is our best chance to save the bees. Sign the urgent petition and send this to everyone — let’s reach half a million signers and deliver it directly to shareholders tomorrow in Germany!

Bees don’t just make honey, they are vital to life on earth, every year pollinating 90% of plants and crops — with an estimated $40bn value, over one-third of the food supply in many countries. Without immediate action to save bees, many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves.

Recent years have seen a steep and disturbing global decline in bee populations — some bee species are already extinct and some US species are at just 4% of their previous numbers. Scientists have been scrambling for answers. Some studies claim the decline may be due to a combination of factors including disease, habitat loss and toxic chemicals. But increasingly, independent research has produced strong evidence blaming neonicotinoid pesticides. France, Italy, Slovenia and even Germany, where the main manufacturer Bayer is based, have banned one of these bee killers. But, Bayer continues to export its poison across the world.

This issue is now coming to the boil as major new studies have confirmed the scale of this problem. If we can get Bayer shareholders to act, we could shut down once and for all Bayer’s influence on policy-makers and scientists. The real experts — the beekeepers and farmers — want these deadly pesticides prohibited until and unless we have solid, independent studies that show they are safe. Let’s support them now. Sign the urgent petition to Bayer shareholders now, then forward this email:

We can no longer leave our delicate food chain in the hands of research run by the chemical companies and the regulators that are in their pockets. Banning this pesticide will move us closer to a world safe for ourselves and the other species we care about and depend on.

With hope,

Alice, Antonia, Mia, Luis, Ricken, Stephanie, Pascal, Iain, Ari and the whole Avaaz team

Earth: mobilized. Keep going!

Check  the world premiere of  Grammy-winner  Esperanza Spalding’s “Endangered Species” video – done especially for Earth  Day!

Your donations help power the movement.

Approximately one billion people in 192  countries took action for Earth Day 2012! From Cairo to Beijing, Melbourne  to Rome, Rio to St. Louis, communities everywhere stood united to Mobilize the  Earth™. The accomplishments are too numerous to name and pouring in every day.

Earth Day Network and its partners worked  together on events across Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and other countries  throughout the Middle East. Our office in Kolkata coordinated nearly 700 events in India alone. There  were massive rallies in New York, Montreal and Seoul, to name a few. The rally  in Washington, D.C., by the steps of the Capitol, was watched all over the  globe as it was streamed live on the web.

More than a day of  service, Earth Day 2012 has been weeks of mobilization that are growing and  galvanizing the environmental movement, making our leaders take notice, and  holding them accountable.

Through Earth Day Network’s Campaign for Communities,  the number of elected officials participating in Earth Day events around the  world was one of the highest we have ever seen. This Earth Day renewed the  work that local governments are doing not only to clean up their communities  and spread environmental awareness but to actually reduce global warming  pollution in the face of national and international inaction.

Thousands of  students from 291 universities in 6 continents, 49 countries, and 36 U.S.  states came together for MobilizeU. Tens of thousands of students have been activated through  MobilizeU, and more than 5.5 million students have been impacted as their  universities were mobilized.

In the U.S., our work led the White House to host its first  summit on environmental education, announce the creation of a special taskforce  on environmental education, and issue an official Earth Day proclamation on the  benefits of green schools. Moreover, the Department of Education announced the  first round of winners in the Green Ribbon Schools program – a monumental  accomplishment that has been years in the making for the entire movement.

And, after only two years…

We reached A Billion Acts of Green®!

A Billion Acts of Green is a global referendum on the  environment, and your pledges have made it the largest environmental service  campaign in the world. It shows the breadth of support for strong, coordinated  action to deal with our most pressing environmental challenges. And we’re going  to take this achievement to world leaders and demand just that.

But, the campaign isn’t over…

Continue to add your  commitments to A Billion Acts of Green as we make our way to the NEXT  billion!
