What Medicare means … Maria Cantwell

When I see Republicans using every trick in the book in an attempt to end Medicare as we know it, I wonder if they really understand what Medicare means to seniors.

It’s more than just a way to pay for routine care like checkups and screenings. It’s a guarantee of economic security — a promise that, if you put in a lifetime of hard work, the floor won’t fall out from underneath your retirement because of a health problem.

Every day, I hear from Washington seniors who rely on this promise — and from people still in the workforce who wonder if it will be there for them when they retire. That’s why I’m committed to strengthening Medicare. I fought to pass reform that will send $250 rebates to 62,000 Washington seniors — a down payment on closing the prescription drugdonut hole.”

That’s the path forward on Medicare: bringing down costs, improving quality, and maintaining that promise of retirement security.

But some see a different path, one in which Medicare would be turned into a voucher program. This would be great for insurance companies — but it would require seniors to pay more. And with so many living on a fixed income, this could leave them with nowhere to turn. A program like that wouldn’t be fair to seniors who rely on Medicare for their economic security. It wouldn’t be Medicare at all.

Medicare is critical to the retirement security of millions. It is a promise we made nearly half a century ago, one of the best things we’ve done as a country. And protecting it is one of the jobs I’m most proud to do.

I’ll be in touch soon with an update on our fight to protect Medicare. But, for now, thank you for being part of this team.

Demand the House GOP pass this bill

Unbelievable. Last week, the Democratic Senate overwhelmingly passed a payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance extension. Now, extremist Tea Party Republicans are refusing to pass it. They are holding the middle class hostage only days before a tax hike will hit millions.
How urgent is this? In just ten days, the average middle class family will see its taxes jump by $1,000 a year. And 2.2 million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits. That’s money families won’t have to spend on food, clothes and rent. That’s money that won’t be spent in our communities. Our entire economy will suffer. Happy New Year, America.
This cannot stand. Demand the House GOP pass this bill. I need your help to reach 100,000 signatures by midnight tomorrow.
Demand that House Republicans pass the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance extension. Now.

People’s lives and livelihoods are at stake here. $1,000 might not be a lot of money to Republican members of Congress, but when you’re living paycheck to paycheck – or are scraping by on unemployment insurance – this is a huge deal.
sign, and pass this petition on to your friends.    WWW.DSCC.ORG

Even Scrooge wasn’t this vindictive. It’s way past time for Republicans to put politics aside and pass this payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance extension. Middle class families are counting on it. For once, Republicans should put them first.

Lowe’s claims it’s committed to diversity — it’s time to prove it!
Tell Lowe’s to reverse course on its decision to pull its advertising from “All-American Muslim in response to a Religious Right hate group.

Dear Carmen,
Maybe you’ve heard about a recent controversy whipped up by the extremist Florida Family Association over TLC‘s reality show “All-American Muslim” and the subsequent decision by Lowe’s Home Improvement to pull its advertising from the show.
Lowe’s speedy capitulation to a small right-wing hate group sets a dangerous precedent and emboldens bigots.
Please sign our petition to Lowe’s Chairman and CEO Robert Niblock now, urging the company to reverse course and reject bigotry.    WWW.PFAW.ORG

TLC launched a popular reality show called “All-American Muslim” about everyday Americans, who happen to be Muslim, going about their lives. They play sports, they go school, they go to work and pay their taxes. This was too much for the anti-Muslim fear mongers at the Florida Family Association, who were outraged that the show was depicting Muslims as “ordinary folks just like you and me.” An article on the organization’s web site suggests that the show instead depict “one of its secular, attractive nominal Muslims as he decided to get more serious about his faith, and ended up participating in jihad activity or Islamic supremacist efforts.”
Lowe’s should have ignored the Right’s bigoted pleas and gone about its business. Instead it caved to a group of bigoted extremists.
Sign our petition to Lowe’s chairman and CEO Robert Niblock right now urging the company to reject extremism and reinstate its advertising on “All-American Muslim.”    WWW.PFAW.ORG

The company claims it is committed to diversity — it’s time to prove it.

P.S. You can also speak out with your decisions as a consumer. People For the American Way encourages all Americans who value religious liberty and reject hate to spend their money elsewhere this holiday season, until Lowe’s Home Improvemen
