This fight starts now …Charles Chamberlain, Democracy for America

The only thing TV pundits can talk about is who’s up and who’s down coming out of the latest Republican presidential debate. But there’s an important election happening this year in Ohio and it’s only a little over one month away.

Here’s the deal: Ohio Governor John Kasich — just like Scott Walker in Wisconsin — pushed through a law to severely cut the rights of workers to negotiate their own contracts. It’s a job killing bill that will cost public employees like firefighters, teachers and cops their healthcare benefits and pay raises so Republicans can give more tax breaks to the super rich and corporations.

While nationally we were focused on Wisconsin, the people of Ohio — including many DFA members — fought back. Over one million voters signed a petition to repeal the law, putting it up for a statewide referendum this November. Now they need our national movement to back them up.

We’ve put together an aggressive campaign to mobilize over 75,000 DFA volunteers in Ohio. We’ll educate voters, identify supporters, and get out the vote this November to defeat the Job Killing Issue 2. We’re ready to hit the ground running on October 5 — going non-stop until Election Day but we can’t make the plan happen without the resources we need to win.
Please contribute $10 right now to deliver the resources to win.   WWW.DemocracyForAmerica.com

Our people-powered campaign will be modeled after the massive campaign you helped us build in Wisconsin this summer — putting staff on the ground to organize volunteers, canvass door-to-door and make phone calls.

Big corporate interests are going to pour money into this referendum, just like they did in Wisconsin. Mother Jones reported that the Koch brothers are holding secret million-dollar donor clubs for their super rich right-wing friends to finance “the mother of all wars” against progressives.

Right-wingers are going all-in in Ohio and we’re ready to do the same — go head to head — and beat them.

Contribute $10 now to fuel our campaign to win in Ohio.    WWW.DemocracyForAmerica.ORG

This fight is this year. It’s happening right now. We will win in Ohio and beat back another out-of-control Republican Governor, because you stood up today and helped fuel the campaign.

Thank you for everything you’re doing to win.

From the desert to the web: bringing the Dead Sea Scrolls online

(Cross-posted on the Nonprofits Blog, the Google.org Blog and the European Public Policy Blog)It’s taken 24 centuries, the work of archaeologists, scholars and historians, and the advent of the Internet to make the Dead Sea Scrolls accessible to anyone in the world.  Today, as the new year approaches on the Hebrew calendar, we’re celebrating the launch of the Dead Sea Scrolls online; a project of The Israel Museum, Jerusalempowered by Google technology.http://youtu.be/5rYj_0foJYA

Written between the third and first centuries BCE, the Dead Sea Scrolls include the oldest known biblical manuscripts in existence.  In 68 BCE, they were hidden in 11 caves in the Judean desert on the shores of the Dead Sea to protect them from the approaching Roman armies. They weren’t discovered again until 1947, when a Bedouin shepherd threw a rock in a cave and realized something was inside.  Since 1965, the scrolls have been on exhibit at the Shrine of the Book at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Among other topics, the scrolls offer critical insights into life and religion in ancient Jerusalem, including the birth of Christianity.

Now, anyone around the world can view, read and interact with five digitized Dead Sea Scrolls.  The high resolution photographs, taken by Ardon Bar-Hama, are up to 1,200 megapixels, almost 200 times more than the average consumer camera, so viewers can see even the most minute details in the parchment.  For example, zoom in on the Temple Scrollto get a feel for the animal skin it’s written on—only one-tenth of a millimeter thick.

You can browse the Great Isaiah Scroll, the most well known scroll and the one that can be found in most home bibles, by chapter and verse. You can also click directly on the Hebrew textand get an English translation.  While you’re there, leave a comment for others to see.

The scroll text is also discoverable via web search.  If you search for phrases from the scrolls, a link to that text within the scroll viewers on the Dead Sea Scrolls collections site may surface in your search results.  For example, search for [Dead Sea Scrolls “In the day of thy planting thou didst make it to grow”], and you may see a link to Chapter 17:Verse 11 within the Great Isaiah Scroll.

This partnership with The Israel Museum, Jerusalem is part of our larger effort to bring important cultural and historical collections online.  We are thrilled to have been able to help this project through hosting on Google Storage and App Engine, helping design the web experience and making it searchable and accessible to the world.  We’ve been involved in similar projects in the past, including building the Yad Vashem Holocaust photo collection and collections at the Prado Museum in Madrid.  We encourage organizations interested in partnering with us in our archiving efforts to enter their information in this form. We hope you enjoy visiting the Dead Sea Scrolls collection online, or any of these other projects, and interacting with history at your fingertips.

just another rant …only it’s not mine   – round 2

I posted an article from the Union of Concerned Scientists on 9/23 … that so controversial question? Is Global Warming Real or is it really Global Cooling …read below. I want to thank the person who responded even though laced with a whole lot of patronizing … i get it … Global Warming is science not politics … unfortunately, some in politics don’t seem to know or get science enough to make intelligent decisions and while the person commenting may not agree but Global Warming became Political in the late 60′s under the Nixon era …ugh right?  anyway, just thought i would share.

Comment 9/23 -My response most certainly is my personal opinion and it is also well supported by proven fact as well as being  shared by an increasing number of honest scientists.

Cheers

9/27 ME  -” i receive info from gore ….”

9/27 Comment – So you believe Al Gore is a reliable source of information with regard to the unproven “Anthropogenic CO2 causes Global Warming” hypothesis then?

Here are a few fact about good old Al that you may not have yet digested.

Believe it or not, Al Gore is not a scientist, but he is a great speaker, just like Hitler was actually.  But lets take a look at Al Gore’s personal life.

Al Gore is not using his superior oratorial powers to help you and me from a failing planet, he is using them to enhance his investments. Doing rather well at it too I might say. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/energy/6491195/Al-Gore-could-become-worlds-first-carbon-billionaire.html

Al says that he is simply “putting his money where his mouth is”, well I don’t know about you but I would say that he is putting  his mouth where his money is – especially when he actively urges Congress to adopt policies in his favour.   In most parts of the world, most people who influence legislators in order to fill their pockets, go to gaol for considerable periods of time.

Now Al urges everyone to take on vows of poverty in order to save the world. This link below says it all better than I can. What about his multiple mansions etc.?
http://blogs.the-american-interest.com/wrm/2011/06/24/the-failure-of-al-gore-part-one/

So Gore is :
1) A God
2) A Guru
3) An idiot
4) A money grubbing con man
5) A fine upright guy.

Check out the links above and then see which category you would like to assign him too.

Cheers

PS If I have not confined myself to reported facts, please point out the error of my ways.

9/27 My response below:

Roger Roger Roger

I did not say i believe all of what Gore or UCS say but that i receive info from them and post
it because they have information to share. I personally believe Global Warming
or you are pushing Global Cooling is definitely a reality that is both environmental
and manmade that is enough for me to digest as a matter of fact. I am one of
several in my family that grew up in a great area with clean air, which has
deteriorated, and those of us who lived in this area prior to the industrial
build up can feel it. I will say again, if you have a newsletter or action
alerts to share i would but I think we are not on the same page. I do know that
AL Gore is not a scientist silly but he has been an advocate with a big name
that has people ask questions and demand more …even though our politicians
who create and pass the laws don’t seem to
be listening …his pluses are that he was a politician and knows people
with information that should get debated … I get it you don’t like or respect
his opinion. I want Republicans to accept we have air quality issues that are
both environmental and manmade and act accordingly for the future of our kids
here in the US and that unfortunately is being filibustered on all angles …I
want cleaner air, stricter regulations , i want those that dumped their shit on
American Indian land or created nasty landfills punished because the run off
quite possibly is pooled or in our ground water; Corporations have gotten away
with secret bs for years and while your focus is on legislators and lobbyists i
really am more concerned about making the lives of people safer especially for
those who almost always have corporations dumping their waste …sometimes
secretly sometimes not so secretly in or near groundwater res and poor people
who i guess they don’t care about …it all contributes to environmental
changes. I am no expert and i never said i was, but as someone who is open to
all information on global warming that will get Congress to do something…Gore
has money to do something … the info comes from scientists who cares. I say
get involved and put the facts out there. I believe in the 1st Amendment and
some come by money in various ways that can annoy, frustrate and offend us but
i won’t hate on Gore for putting out info there or his ability to make $$$ that
is the American way. I will say if there are facts out there that prove him
wrong then i would discontinue posting info and or vote for his efforts but
that has not happened for me personally… yet. If I have learned anything
since the days when Congress believed in the fact that there is an increase, in
asthmatics …clean air gives certain States big regulation worries and even if
Gore were right, we have too many climate deniers to move toward a cleaner USA.
Again, i am not an expert so your abc thing is silly and just accept we will
have to agree to disagree. I did visit your blog and you do not like President
Obama so …that puts us at odds, but thank you for the conversation.

Bridges that need fixing …

Can you take a photo of a bridge to create a bridge to jobs?

Last week, lots of people took photos of President Obama as he spoke on the Brent Spence Bridge over the Ohio River. It’s one of the nation’s busiest bridges, but it’s rated unsafe and functionally obsolete.1 And like the president said, it’s hardly the only piece of our infrastructure in desperate need of repair.2I’m betting Seattle has things that need fixing too, and work that needs doing.

Our vital infrastructure is falling to pieces, but construction workers can’t find jobs. It’s not right. The Contract for the American Dream that we all created together made the solution clear: Congress needs to pass jobs legislation that puts people back to work rebuilding our bridges, roads, schools, and other necessary structures. And with our photos of work that needs doing, we’ll keep the pressure on them to do just that.

Can you take a picture of work that needs doing in Seattle?

Everything you need is right here:http://www.workthatneedsdoing.org/americandream/.

We’ll deliver your photos to Congress and use them to keep the focus on how we can rebuild the American Dream by putting unemployed workers back on the job fixing our communities.

By showing photos of real work that needs doing nationwide, we can make the problem harder for Congress to ignore and build the push for legislation like the president’s jobs plan.

Can you add a photo of failing infrastructure in your community?

http://www.workthatneedsdoing.org/americandream/

Once you’ve uploaded your picture, share this action to help it grow. The more photos we have, the more effective they are.

Thank you for being a part of, and believing in, this movement.
