In Memory of Botham Jean
On September 6, 2018 an off-duty Dallas police officer fatally shoots an unarmed Black man in the victim’s own apartment.
Returning to her apartment complex in Dallas, police officer Amber Guyger entered the apartment of Botham Jean, believing it to be her own. The apartment door was ajar, she later testified, and when she entered she found a man inside. She fired her weapon, killing him.
Guyger was not arrested until three days later and was originally charged with manslaughter, rousing the anger of the public. She was eventually charged with murder.
However,
Amber Guyger is still in prison and has not been released. She was sentenced in 2019 to 10 years in prison for the 2018 murder of Botham Jean, a Dallas police officer who was fatally shot in his own apartment while off-duty.
In October 2024, the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole denied her a favorable parole action, meaning she will not be eligible to apply again until October 2026. Her next parole review date is set for that time, and unless she is granted parole then, her sentence will run until September 9, 2029
Guyger is currently housed at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, Texas, with her scheduled release date listed as September 29, 2029
In summary, as of now, Amber Guyger remains incarcerated, with no early release in sight, and will have to wait at least two more years before she can attempt parole again.
