I was seven years old when thousands of East German signature cars arrived in my hometown of Hamburg and filled the air with odd-smelling blue smoke. I saw strangers hugging each other, tears in their eyes, their voices tired from singing. I was too young to understand it all, but I had a very strong sense that life was different now–and that different was better.A quarter-century later, it is our obligation to tell this story to all those who couldn’t be there, who could not feel the spark of the peaceful revolution and, more importantly, who are fortunate enough not to know the feeling of an incarcerated, divided existence, trapped behind concrete walls. It is a story that demands to be told today, and for generations to come.

I’m excited to have been part of making this doodle commemorating such a pivotal moment in history — to learn more about the making-of, check out the doodle team’s post here. We should all take the time to celebrate 25 years of unity.

What credentials are needed to be an investigative journalist/reporter?

So, you might think that most people qualified to do investigations have actual college credits? What is an investigative reporter? Do they hold degrees in investigations? Having worked for a non-profit… all investigators were college trained with degrees … Is it his job or the job of anyone else? Seems like media coverage out of control … is it over the edge… could it be slander? Defamation of character? Station after station … gotta say I was proud of londell … the news community needs to be warned … and that’s my opinion

and who is buying the comment made by diane diamond about speaking ill of the dead?

As TV viewers, what can we do? We listen to the continual bombardment of negative news … that poor family

is it really his job to investigate? or is it to report the news because that definitely is not what is going on.

is anyone else upset these tv personalities are saying they have the facts … do they really because it sure doesn’t sound like it.

Happy Cinco de Mayo

The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday

Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain at midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. It took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico.

So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why would Americans savor this day as well?

Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5 1862.

RADICAL RIGHT — MCDONNELL: SLAVERY WASN’T ‘SIGNIFICANT’ ENOUGH TO BE INCLUDED IN MY CONFEDERACY PROCLAMATION: TP

Last week, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) “quietly declared April 2010 Confederate History Month,” calling on Virginians to, among other things, “understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War.” Notably absent from the proclamation, however, is any mention of slavery. McDonnell explained yesterday that he did not reference slavery because he focused on the issues that he “thought were most significant for Virginia.”

Neither of Virginia’s previous two governors, Democrats Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, declared a Confederate History Month. Republican governor Jim Gilmore, who served from 1998-2002, did issue such proclamations but acknowledged slavery as “one of the causes of the war” and a practice that “degraded the human spirit” and “is abhorred and condemned by Virginians.” For his final proclamation in 2001, Gilmore replaced Confederate History Month with “a tribute to both black and white Civil War combatants that expressly denounces slavery as the root cause of the four-year conflict.” Gilmore’s predecessor, Republican George Allen, started the practice of Confederate History Month. He didn’t include slavery in his proclamation and, under significant pressure from civil rights leaders, eventually apologized.

As the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on April 12, 1997, Allen said, “Surely, I don’t want to upset anyone.

For those who are sincerely offended…I apologize.”

The American Prospect’s Adam Serwer writes that McDonnell’s proclamation is “telling” because “it reveals which Virginians he feels are ‘significant.'”
