Coming soon: coal dust and explosions?

Transporting fossil fuels like oil and coal is a dangerous business.oil train derailment

greenpeaceRight now, oil and coal companies are pushing to build export terminals all along the Pacific Northwest — and if they get their way, our beloved region will soon turn into a fossil fuel corridor.

What would that look like exactly? Lots of trains carrying dirty fossil fuels. Hazardous coal dust could soon be polluting the air we breathe. Derailments could cause tragic, deadly explosions in the neighborhoods we love. These mile-long trains are simply accidents waiting to happen.

Join us in Olympia, WA on October 30 to demand that our leaders protect our safety from dangerous coal and oil trains.

WHAT: Rally and Public Hearing on Fossil Fuel Trains
WHERE: Red Lion, 2300 Evergreen Park Drive, Olympia, WA 98502 (map)
WHEN: Thursday, October 30 at 5:00 p.m.
TRANSPORTATION: Buses will be available from Vancouver, Bellingham, and Seattle. For questions on how to get to the event, please contact me at bmanning@greenpeace.org

Just over a year ago, a train carrying crude oil derailed in Quebec, Canada, resulting in fires and explosions that killed more than 40 people. Unfortunately, accidents like this continue to occur far too often. Help prevent deadly oil and coal disasters in the Pacific Northwest by speaking out at a public hearing.

Now is the time to speak up and demand protection for our families. In October, we have a unique chance to engage with state decision makers about the impacts of oil and coal transport in our communities. Governor Inslee has commissioned a study to look into the potential impacts of oil transportation in Washington, and is giving the public a chance to comment.

Join us at a public hearing to show that these projects are far too dangerous.

Help ensure that the study addresses the whole picture — including threats to public safety, our economy, and waterways like the Puget Sound. Your participation can inform how the state will respond to this very important issue.

Don’t miss this important opportunity to speak up. Join us!

For a green and peaceful future,

Brian Manning
Pacific Northwest Organizer

P.S. If you can’t come to the hearing, you can still make a difference! Submit a public comment today, telling Governor Inslee that coal and oil export stations are too dangerous for Washington.

a message from Sherrod Brow ~~ Petition: Protect Social Security

sherrodbrown.com

Social Security was intended to provide certainty to seniors. People call it a safety net because that’s part of what it does — Social Security’s guaranteed benefits act as an income floor below which we, as a nation, have chosen not to let anyone fall.

Well, the Republicans don’t necessarily see it that way. They’ll hedge their bets and say that they only want to cut Social Security later — not for today’s seniors, just for the younger generations who are currently paying into Social Security.

A broken promise is a broken promise no matter how you spin it. Republicans’ plans to cut, privatize, or otherwise mess with Social Security for seniors and disabled workers are fundamentally wrong — if you agree, please sign our petition.

The only real threat to Social Security is Republicans’ election-year political games. They’ve been after Social Security for a long, long time.

Show your support for Social Security. Sign the petition.

Thank you,

Sherrod

a message from Michelle Obama to … Supporters !

  1. You’re committed. If you’ve posted on Facebook about these elections or talked to a friend — you’ve done more for this election than your vote alone.
  2. You care about the future. These elections are about the country and world we want to leave for our kids and grandkids. You get that.
  3. You’re smart. Smart people are tuned in to these elections because they know how much ground we can gain.
  4. You like Barack. I think he’s pretty cool, too.
  5. You are standing by your convictions. Each time you chip in that extra $5 or $10, you are putting your name and your hard-earned money behind Barack and Democrats. It makes me so proud — and so grateful.
  6. You’ve got a lot of friends. With hundreds of thousands of Democrats across the country coming together to elect leaders who share our values, I think you’re in good company!

An Interview You Should Watch:

Whenever challenges face the world, one fact is clear: The world looks to the United States.

Last night, in an interview with 60 Minutes, President Obama explained why the United States is “the indispensable nation” when trouble arises in the world. From responding to humanitarian crises to confronting terrorism, America leads.

Because, as the President said, “that’s how we roll.”

Watch the video here — and pass it on.
