Help UCS tell Rush Limbaugh that thermometers don’t lie

It’s a critical time in the fight against global warming. The attacks on science are intensifying, more shrill and blatant than ever.

The heat index in Washington, D.C. hit 116 degrees this summer. But, instead of addressing why it’s been so hot, Rush Limbaugh charged that this scientific scale was “manufactured by the government.”

Let’s end the disinformation on climate change.

Help UCS expose and challenge attacks on science.

That’s why I’m asking you to become a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), and help us stand up for science—and fight back against disinformation about global warming.   www.ucsusa.org

Cynical media pundits like Rush Limbaugh can try to distract the public with empty charges against an accepted scientific measurement scale developed more than three decades ago to help protect public health. But global warming is happening and the time to act is now.

It isn’t just a question of one hot summer. Consider that:
Fifteen of the past sixteen years have ranked as the warmest ever.
The world’s major scientific research teams have all independently determined that 2001-2010 was the hottest decade on record.

So, while climate deniers try to mislead the public, UCS is stepping up our efforts to get out the facts and propose real-world practical solutions to the problems that climate change is causing.

And you are a key partner in all our work.

So, don’t let cynical pundits, corporations, or politicians get away with lies or try to change the subject about global warming. You know that in this age of massive corporate donations to political campaigns, clear, independent analysis is harder and harder to come by.

That’s why I’m counting on you to become a member today.       www.ucsusa.org

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for all your help and support.

Sincerely,

Kevin Knobloch
President

Call the Whitehouse 202-456-1111 …Tell President Obama to go big bold and bad

Just another rant …

Today, is the last day of August and while the last week has been crisis filled the last 24months has seen record numbers of hurricanes, a lot of flooding displacing numerous Americans with most if not all of us wondering why those on the right don’t believe in climate change or maybe just leaving the bs out for awhile. I think the weather and the damage we have seen should not be used another tool to hold middle America hostage for more spending cuts. It is not the time as this is the beginning of hurricane season covering the entire eastcoast is just or should be a reminder of things that should be reassessed the old taken out while rules regulations and infrastructure be moved into the 21st Century. President Obama spoke to Americans about the Surface Transportation Bill which is due to be reauthorized or expire by the end of September that provides an extension of Federal-aid highway, highway safety, motor carrier safety, transit, and other programs  though given how Teapublicans have been acting this legislation might need “We the People” to push in the current environment. The Political climate is getting heated as the sometimes-ugly rhetoric regarding race religion and gender preferences seem to be the big stick Republicans are wielding at those with truly weak minds who seem unwilling to remember what being an American is all about. It makes you wonder  what is taught at home or at the schools of right leaning people these days given the things we hear happening at the Middle and High School level . It really seems like an overt dogma of exclusion of or violence toward anyone who appears different, which is exactly what so-called adults politicians are behaving and acting out on all levels. My hope that any sane person would think this attitude is not what Americans are all about by any stretch of the imagination. We are a country of immigrants with various types of families that are blended but apparently to Teapublicans and their “family values platform, family is something only they and their religion can support. If you listen to Teapublicans, the meaning of family and marriage is limited and definitely make sense only to them. I do not understand the attitude and do not subscribe to it because it is un-American. While TV is steering clear of the whole “birther” and “other” label once forced upon President Obama and his family. The Right Wing radio airwaves continue to push for tribalism and would have us all believing President Obama among other things is not trust worthy, what with his funny name and family history being proof he just is not the one to vote for the White House. In some circles President Obama has been bashed for not being Black enough or on the other extreme … too Black to represent all Americans which is so offensive in and of itself.  Well, while i do not like opinion news at all it does seem to be all that is offered up these days even with a 24/7 news cycle. I prefer news without a side jab at President Obama and gossip is great …that is if i tuned into a show that does gossip for a living; don’t say you’re a news station then spend time on some celebrities personal life say a couple of strange things and ask viewers to respond. It is a waste of time when there is real news to be reported on stations that call themselves News

lets leave the gossip to gossip shows unless it’s connected to politics but then again one person’s gossip is another’s news … ugh

President Obama made remarks at the American Legion convention in Minneapolis. He talked about his plan to help veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan find jobs.  Unemployment among veterans is at almost 23%, which is double the national average.   More Info »

Urge Obama to protect our health

Unchecked global warming could threaten public health and increase health costs by exacerbating ground-level ozone—the primary component of smog. Fortunately, this fall the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will announce proposed standards to curb global warming emissions from our nation’s dirtiest power plants and later this year will issue similar standards for oil refineries. These standards will help protect the public’s health and our environment from the dangerous consequences of global warming.

However, the Obama administration is under enormous pressure from the coal and oil industries to release weak standards that will do little to nothing to protect our health and environment.

The administration needs to hear from you that the oil and coal lobbyists don’t represent your interests and that you want clear air policies that are based on science—not on the disinformation of corporate lobbyists.

We know the vast majority of the public stands with us on this issue. But sometimes agreeing from the sidelines is not enough. This is a fight worth joining—a chance to step up and really make a difference.

Tell President Obama to protect the health of the American people by ensuring strong Clean Air Act standards reduce global warming emissions.

Take Action Today!  202 456 1111

Hunt for climate impacts, win a trip to Brazil

Imagine this situation: You’re stuck at the airport for who knows how long because your plane’s been grounded, you’re covered in the itchiest poison ivy you’ve ever had, and the airport bar is out of your favorite Cabernet.

What is going on?

Check out the new UCS Climate Hot Map. Travel the world to learn where global warming is already having an impact and you could win a trip for two to help find answers to the challenges of climate change in the Rio Cachoeira Natural Reserve in Brazil!

This is climate change. Many people don’t realize it, but global warming is already affecting our lives and it’s causing trouble in surprising places—like in North Carolina where climate change has caused poison ivy to become more potent.

And unfortunately, itchy, thirsty, and impatient are only the beginning—there are dozens of ways global warming is already affecting the world and could be affecting you!

Today, the Union of Concerned Scientists introduces a new, interactive way to learn about the local consequences of global warming and the solutions available to meet the climate challenge. The Climate Hot Map allows you to travel the world and explore the places (or “hot spots”) where scientists have gathered evidence of climate changes that are already under way.

Check out some of the highlights from the Climate Hot Map by taking our Climate Hot Map Scavenger Hunt today.By joining the hunt for hot spots, you’ll be entered to win our grand prize: an Earthwatch Institute trip for two to assess the impacts of climate change on the Rio Cachoeira Natural Reserve in Brazil! You’ll get additional entries for every correct Hot Spot you identify and for sharing the Climate Hot Map Scavenger Hunt with friends and family members. Five runners-up will receive a Solio Mono Hybrid Solar Charger—great for traveling or at home to charge your cell phone or MP3 player using the power of the sun.

So what are you waiting for? Travel the world, win cool prizes, learn about the local impacts of global warming today, and find out what communities around the world are doing to reduce global warming emissions. Start the Scavenger Hunt now.

Brenda Ekwurzel, Ph.D.
