The Sumatran tiger is classified as “critically endangered” — on the brink of extinction and barely hanging on.

They’ve lost 93% of their habitat because companies like Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) are destroying their forest homes. Tigers are left to roam landscapes where they are easily slaughtered by poachers for their body parts or shot by the people moving in.

How many more acres of destruction can the Sumatran tiger survive before its status moves from “critically endangered” to “extinct”? We have to act, and fast.

To fight back, we need your help to expose the massacre, pressure corporations like KFC to cut ties with APP and fight on the ground in Indonesia to save these last remaining Sumatran tigers.

Rainforest destruction. Not what you expected? Unfortunately it’s true. Our researchers have found that KFC’s throw-away packaging contains fiber from Indonesia’s rainforest.
That’s right. KFC is destroying the habitat of the last remaining Sumatran tigers for potato wedges and 12-piece buckets of extra crispy chicken. It’s disgusting.
KFC gets the paper for its packaging from a notoriously destructive company called Asia Pulp & Paper (APP). And APP is driving rainforest destruction in Indonesia at an alarming rate to meet KFC’s demands — leaving endangered Sumatran tigers with nowhere to go.
Don’t let fast food packaging be the end of the Sumatran tiger and everything else that calls the Indonesian rainforest home. Help us send 50,000 messages to KFC in the next 72 hours by taking action right now.

Reducing greenhouse gas pollution … Gabe Wisniewski, Greenpeace


Reducing greenhouse gas pollution is one of the most urgent things for our government to do.

Tell the EPA we need stronger rules to protect us from climate change.

The effects of climate change are everywhere. Historically warm winters, killer heat waves and droughts, and 100-year storms have hammered our country in recent years.

Still, power plants in the US are allowed to spew unlimited carbon pollution, which is driving us closer to runaway climate change.

President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finally proposed the first ever rule to change this. Unfortunately, to be as effective as possible, this rule needs to be strengthened significantly.

The rule — known as the Carbon Pollution Standard — limits the amount of carbon pollution that new coal-fired power plants are allowed to emit. Unfortunately, the rule is full of loopholes and applies only to new power plants that are unlikely to be built in the first place. The rule does nothing to reduce carbon pollution from existing sources.

The EPA is now accepting public comments. This is your chance to let the EPA know you want the loopholes closed, the rule finalized and for them to get to work on limiting the coal fired power plants that actually exist.

Tell the EPA: We need strong legal limits to protect us from existing and future sources of carbon pollution.

Coal-fired power plants are the largest single source of carbon pollution in the US. If we don’t put a limit on the amount of climate change causing pollution they are allowed to spew into the air then things are only going to get worse.

Greenpeace and other groups have been working in communities across the country to close down these dirty old plants and stop new ones from being built altogether. We’ve been extremely successful, but we need a strong ruling from the EPA on this issue to fully address climate change.

Americans, have an important role to play in the final outcome of this rule. Almost 200,000 Greenpeace supporters have already submitted their comments to the EPA. Take a minute and add your voice to that list.

Polar Bear Cubs Won’t Stand a Chance …Dan Howells, Greenpeace


It’s getting harder for a polar bear mother and her cubs to survive in the Arctic.

Each day she has to travel farther and farther for food as the sea ice she relies on to hunt rapidly disappears because of global warming. Each day brings her hungry cubs closer to starvation. And now she has to deal with the prospect of an oil spill.

Oil giant Shell is heading her way right now to drill the very first wells in the pristine waters off the coast of Alaska this summer. If the company finds what it is looking for the Arctic oil rush will be on — and a spill won’t be far behind. This polar bear mother and her cubs won’t stand a chance.

Donate now and help us raise $35,000 by midnight March 30th to save this polar bear mother and her cubs from Arctic drilling. We need just 50 donors from WA to make this happen.

Greenpeace plans to mobilize millions of people around the world in 2012 to save the Arctic by using creative campaigning. It’s all hands on deck. We know that it’s the only way to get the attention of policy makers and put a stop Arctic drilling.

Our goal is to permanently ban oil drilling and industrial fishing in the Arctic and to establish the area around the North Pole as a ‘global commons.’ It may seem ambitious, but we’ve done it before. In 1991, a Greenpeace campaign much like this one helped establish Antarctica as a world park and off limits to commercial extraction.

We can do it, but not without your support.

Stop Shell from drilling in the Arctic


Shell responded to our opposition around its plans to drill in the Arctic by filing for one of the broadest and most restrictive injunctions in US history against Greenpeace USA. It’s exactly the kind of anti-democratic reaction you would expect from a major oil company.

Regardless of what happens in court, Greenpeace is going to continue to oppose Shell’s plans. But we’ll only win if we have your support. Join 300,000 people from around the world and demand that Shell stop its plans to put the fragile Arctic at risk.

Right this minute a global fleet of Arctic destroyers is speeding towards one of the last unspoiled places on earth.

Shell plans to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean this summer.

Take action and demand Shell stop its plans to drill in the Arctic.

The ships are part of oil giant Shell’s mission to drill the very first wells in the pristine waters off the coast of Alaska. It’s insane, but melting sea ice from global warming has made it a reality. If Shell finds oil, the Arctic oil rush will be on.

It’s not over yet though. People are pushing back. In New Zealand, Greenpeace activists (including Xena Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless) occupied a drill ship and prevented it from leaving for the Arctic for several days. And just last week activists occupied two icebreakers in Finland.

But to stop Shell for good, we eventually need the public support of millions around the world. Carmen, that means you.

Widespread public opposition here in the US is going to be the key to stopping Shell. The US government is responsible for giving Shell the green light to drill. Greenpeace will be delivering these messages to the company soon. Our goal is to add the names of at least 40,000 Americans to that list before we do. Your message matters.

Shell isn’t prepared for a disaster in the Arctic Ocean. No one is. The Arctic Ocean makes the Gulf of Mexico look like a flat, calm lake. With constant high seas, icebergs and massive waves, there’s no way to effectively cleanup an oil spill in the Arctic Ocean. Even the head of the US Coast Guard has publicly admitted that his agency would have little chance of dealing with a spill in the frozen Arctic on their own. 

The plan Shell has submitted actually includes using things like shovels, brooms and a sniffer dog called “Tara” to cleanup a potential spill. It would be funny if there wasn’t so much at stake.

All Shell cares about is its corporate bottom line. Polar bears and unspoiled natural beauty are just obstacles to making ever greater profits. Together we can create a public obstacle Shell can’t overcome — but it’s going to take millions of us.
