Pregnancy — a blessing or a death threat?

CARE -- You can help stop mothers from dying

Your gift can help mothers live and create bright futures for generations to come.

Francisca gave birth at home because there was no health center nearby in rural Nicaragua. She was lucky — she didn’t endure complications during pregnancy or childbirth. But hundreds of thousands of women and their babies are not as fortunate. Almost every minute of the day a pregnant woman needlessly dies because she can’t get trained medical assistance in time.

Inspired by delivering her own child, Francisca became a community midwife. She’s delivered dozens of healthy babies. Thanks to CARE‘s comprehensive midwife training programs, Francisca’s also saving the lives of mothers. You can help, too, by making a tax-deductible gift to support CARE’s work around the world.

Pregnancy should be a time to celebrate, not a time to fear death. But, in some poor countries, one in seven women die during pregnancy and childbirth. These women aren’t dying because the health community doesn’t know how to prevent their deaths. They are dying because the world doesn’t care enough. Do you?

Women’s lives should be saved because they matter — as humans, as mothers and as valuable contributors to society. At CARE, we’ve learned that healthy mothers are one of the keys to overcoming poverty — they can give their children the foundation they need to chart their way out of poverty for good. Healthy moms have a better chance at giving birth to babies who can thrive and grow up strong, and healthy moms are more likely to earn an income and send their children to school.

That’s why CARE made reducing maternal mortality one of our top priorities. From training women like Francisca to be midwives to educating families about reproductive health, CARE helps save lives and empowers women to create a brighter future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Let’s not leave surviving pregnancy, childbirth and infancy to chance. Your tax-deductible contribution can help save the lives of poor mothers and their children — and create a healthier, more prosperous society for all.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

As you count your blessings this Thanksgiving, please don’t forget Abebu. I know I’ll be thinking about her as I gather around the table with my family and friends on Thursday.

Abebu is a 25-year-old mother of five in Ethiopia. Earlier this year, she planted wheat, corn and sorghum on her small plot, but most of her seeds didn’t survive the scalding drought that gripped her land. She says: “We really don’t have anything to eat. At night my children cry a lot and go to sleep early to avoid more hunger pain.”

Last month, health workers visited Abebu’s home and found that her baby, Desta, was malnourished, an all too common problem in their poor community. CARE helped supplement the family’s diet and now Desta and the rest of the family are doing well.

The good news is that Abebu’s 10-year-old daughter persevered and stayed in school, despite being hungry. And now with CARE’s help, if she can stick with her education she’ll be able to create a brighter future for herself and her family one day.

The other good news is that you can help people like Abebu when you make a tax-deductible gift to CARE.

When women like Abebu are empowered to fulfill their potential, they invest in their families and work for lasting change. That’s why CARE works side-by-side with women in the fight against hunger and poverty in more than 70 countries around the world.

Your gift to CARE today will help sustain our programs that help people like Abebu and her children grow healthy and strong, stay in school, earn an income and, ultimately, escape hunger and poverty — for good.

Thank you and happy Thanksgiving from all of us at CARE.

Sincerely,

6 million children die of hunger every year

CARE -- You can help children escape hunger and poverty -- Make a gift today

The time to act is now -- Make a gift today

Ten million children die before their fifth birthday every year. Malnutrition and hunger-related diseases cause 60 percent of these deaths.

CARE needs your support to help people in crises worldwide escape hunger and poverty.

Hasana is a young mother in Niger who struggled to feed her 10-month-old daughter during the food crisis that gripped the Sahel region of Africa earlier this year. “I have no milk for her,” Hasana said. “When she cries, I give her millet mixed with water and milk, but it does not have the nourishment she needs.”

Suffering from severe malnutrition, baby Farida, was admitted to a health clinic supported by CARE just in time. CARE also helped Hasana through a program for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Today, both are fine. However, Farida’s future depends on whether Hasana will be able to provide the infant with the nutrition she needs to grow healthy and strong in the months and years to come.

Hasana needs a partner in her fight against hunger and poverty. Will you make a gift to CARE today? Here are just a few ways your tax-deductible gift can make a difference:

  • $77 could provide more than 900 hungry children a warm, nutritious meal at school to improve their energy, attention and performance.
  • $46 could provide a mother with a garden kit, including a spade, watering can and other tools, to improve crop production and income for her entire family.
  • $24 could give two farmers a handbook on improved techniques to increase and better manage their crop production.

When women like Hasana are empowered to fulfill their potential, they invest in their families and work for lasting change. That’s why CARE works side-by-side with women in the fight against hunger and poverty in more than 70 countries around the world every single day of the year.

Please don’t wait for another crisis to help people like Hasana and Farida. Make a gift today to help empower women around the world create a brighter future for all.
