A home for Indigenous communities. A sanctuary for endangered species. A priceless ecosystem.

That’s what Indonesia‘s rainforests are to me. But for unethical logging companies Asia Pulp & Paper and APRIL, these forests are nothing more than a source of cheap paper—and their bottom line is wiping out rainforests that can’t ever be replaced. We need your support today to stop this tragic destruction.

Many U.S. children’s book publishers have been using paper from these unethical companies, pitting children’s books against the survival of Indonesia’s rainforests. But, thanks to your actions and generous support, this is changing.

Already eight major publishers committed to get Indonesian rainforest destruction and human rights violations out of their supply chain. That’s major. Your support made this possible.

Disney Publishing and HarperCollins, on the other hand, have been lagging behind. Finally, last week Disney announced their new policy. Though this is a step in the right direction, their policy is terribly weak—and HarperCollins has ignored all calls to change their ways. With your support, we can push Disney and HarperCollins to go the distance to protect rainforests.

Disney’s new policy does not begin to address the rights of forest communities or really help to protect rainforests. If we can move Disney and HarperCollins, it will mean that the top ten children’s book publishers will no longer have Indonesia’s rainforests in their books, and that you and I will have shifted the status quo for an entire industry.

Will Disney do right by rainforests?

Reading a bedtime story to your kids shouldn’t mean you’re contributing to the destruction of irreplaceable rainforests. Pretty obvious, right? But Disney Publishing and HarperCollins disagree.

These two publishing giants are using paper linked to Indonesian rainforest destruction to print their children’s books. We can change that.

We’re taking the fight to protect Indonesia‘s rainforests straight to the companies responsible for this tragic destruction—and we need you with us. Make a gift today to help RAN shine a spotlight on those responsible for the destruction of Indonesia’s tropical forests.

Already, you and I are having a significant impact. After months of conversations and negotiations—and good old-fashioned RAN activism—eight of the largest American book publishers have committed to get controversial Indonesian fiber out of their books.

Six months ago, I took on the job of leading this amazing and unbelievably committed organization—Rainforest Action Network.

Since then, not a day has gone by that I haven’t felt the weight of what my job means. We are on the front line of a fight that will determine what kind of world we live in, and what kind of world we leave behind. Every single day I am challenged. Excited. Honored.

Every day, my purpose is absolutely clear to me: to stand in solidarity with communities around the globe and do everything I can to protect the earth’s forests and climate.

I know I’m not the only one. I know you care very deeply about the same things. This is the time of year to make good on our commitments, and one way you can do this is by supporting Rainforest Action Network with a tax-deductible year-end contribution.

RAN is no ordinary organization–but you probably know that. We take on the biggest, most well-funded polluters and exploiters in the world–oil, coal, agribusiness and timber corporations–and we win. It sometimes takes years, but we persist, we fight, we organize, and we absolutely refuse to give up.

It took two years, but we finally forced eight major banks to acknowledge their role in destroying Appalachian communities and agree to severely limit funding of mountaintop removal. It took thousands of RAN activists speaking out, but this summer General Mills agreed to stop harming Indigenous communities and fragile ecosystems by sourcing only responsibly produced palm oil.

That’s what it takes to create change. It takes time, it takes courage, it takes passion–it takes RAN, and it takes you.

These victories are exactly what you support when you contribute to RAN. Unlike many organizations, we never take money from big business. We have no government money. This independence is what allows us to speak the truth no matter the consequences. It is the right thing to do, and it’s why RAN is here.

With victories though, comes increased opposition, and our opposition has deep, deep pockets. RAN’s annual budget is pocket change compared to the multi-national corporations who’d like to see us fail. That’s why your support matters so very much to RAN. We can’t keep this up without you.

Don’t buy children’s books that destroy rainforests.

Books make incredible gifts for children. As the winter holidays approach, RAN and Tiki The Tiger want to help you make sure rainforest paper isn’t part of the present.

Shockingly, many U.S. publishers have released at least one children’s book that tested positive for paper fiber linked to Indonesian rainforest destruction. With one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, Indonesia‘s rainforests- and the communities and endangered wildlife that live there- are disappearing rapidly.

We want to make sure that you and your gifts don’t get wrapped up in rainforest destruction this holiday season. Introducing our new pocket-sized Rainforest-Safe Kids’ Books Shopping Guide….

The Tiniest Tiger in the World

Deep in the beautiful Sumatran rainforests of Indonesia lives the tiniest tiger in the world. His name is Tiki.

Sumatran tigers are now the smallest tiger species in existence, ever since their relatives, the Javan tigers, went extinct. There are currently less than 500 Sumatran tigers left in the wild and Tiki is their new super cute superhero spokestiger.

Please help Tiki save the tiny tigers!

Start by reading Tiki’s story and sharing it with the children in your life.

Tiki’s home is in great danger. Every day, wood pulp and paper companies threaten the survival of these majestic felines by clear-cutting their precious rainforest habitat, draining wildlife rich (carbon-filled) peatlands, and turning these lands into plantations.

Tiki is calling on kids, parents, teachers, families and you to help him defend his rainforest home.

Be Tiki’s friend so he can keep you in the know about actions to save the tiny tigers of Sumatra.

Before Sumatran tigers like Tiki become just another extinct species for the history books or a special “last remaining” exhibit at the zoo, we must stop destructive paper companies from tearing down Indonesia’s precious rainforests.
