Today is the day!
Equal Pay Day represents the day that the average woman’s wages finally catch up to the average man’s earnings from the year before. You read that right: we had to get more than 3 months into 2013 before women’s wages caught up with men’s from the prior year.
We need to channel our shock and anger into action or it’s not going to get any better. That’s why we need your help RIGHT NOW! Thank the President for his leadership on fair pay today and ask him to take the next step by signing an executive order on equal pay.
The executive order would ensure that contractors who do business with the federal government cannot retaliate against workers who discuss their own pay. The order would affect over 20 percent of America‘s civilian workforce.
The bottom line is that you can’t learn if you’re being paid less if your employer can penalize you for talking about your salary. That’s the rule that applied to Lilly Ledbetter when she worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., which was, you guessed it, a federal contractor. It took her nearly 20 years to find out that she was being paid as much as 40 percent less than her male co-workers. Had there been a ban on these sorts of punishing pay practices, Lilly might have learned much earlier about her lower pay. President Obama can take steps to end retaliatory pay secrecy policies among federal contractors. Please join us by taking action today!
This is why we need your help: After a decade in which the 23-cent wage gap has not budged one penny, we must fight this issue on all fronts. The tax break highlighted here — known as “deferral” — allows corporations to delay paying taxes on offshore profits. This encourages multinational corporations to move jobs and profits offshore — and costs the U.S. $60.6 billion a year. That’s more than all these programs combined:
The Child Care and Development Fund, which helps low-income working families afford child care.
Child nutrition programs, which provide meals to school-age children and young children and adults in day care facilities.
Funding for Title I schools serving disadvantaged children, which helps improve educational opportunities.
U.S. lawmakers should get their priorities in order — instead of balancing the budget on the backs of women and families, they should ask wealthy individuals and corporations to pay their fair share of taxes. True religious freedom means that everyone has the right to make his or her own personal decisions, including whether to use birth control. But some bosses want to impose their religious beliefs on their employees. Last time I checked, your employees had religious beliefs, too. The April 8 deadline to stop these bosses is fast approaching!

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released a proposed rule whose goal is making birth control without co-pays and hassles a reality regardless of where a woman works, and the agency is asking people to comment on it. But some lawmakers and religious organizations don’t agree. They believe that if your boss has a certain religious belief, you’d better live by it, too. This is your last chance to show your support — we need to speak out and make sure that essential health care like birth control is available for all women who need it.
Tell HHS you support its plan to make birth control coverage without co-pays and hassles available to women, regardless of where they work.
The reality is that nearly 99% of sexually active women, regardless of their religious beliefs, use contraception at some point in their lives. It’s crucial that women have access to affordable birth control to prevent unintended pregnancies, plan the timing and size of their families, and protect their health.

In a matter of days, the Senate is going to vote on a budget that we can believe in.
A budget that would give more children access to early learning, protect Social Security and most core safety net programs, expand access to affordable health insurance, end the sequester’s arbitrary program cuts, and improve tax fairness. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, did her part by developing a budget that stands in stark contrast to the devastating Ryan budget. Now it’s our turn to stand up for a better budget for women and families. Please take two minutes to tell your Senators to vote YES on the Murray budget.
Need a reason to take action? We have five of them!
Senator Patty Murray’s budget would:
Increase investments in early learning and home visiting programs, giving more children access to prekindergarten, child care, Head Start and Early Head Start opportunities.
Expand access to affordable health insurance and preventive care services by continuing to fully implement the Affordable Care Act.
Replace the arbitrary cuts from the “sequester,” including for this year, with a mix of revenue increases and other spending cuts.
And a bonus reason!
The Murray budget would close corporate tax loopholes and limit unfair tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, raising revenue needed to support vital programs and contribute to deficit reduction.
The time to act is now! Your Senators need to hear that you expect them to vote YES on the Murray budget.

We’ve had enough.
For the third year in a row, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) has proposed a plan that balances the federal budget on the backs of women and families.
The Ryan budget is an unfair and irresponsible plan that would undermine key programs women and families count on — while giving tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations.
Action is needed now! The House of Representatives could vote as early as tomorrow on the Ryan budget. Tell your Representative to vote NO on the Ryan Budget.
Wondering if you should take action? Think about this.
Ryan’s budget would:
Deny millions of women and families access to affordable health insurance by repealing the Affordable Care Act.
Significantly cut funding for programs like child care assistance and Head Start, which help women work and children learn.
Undermine core safety net programs that women count on by slashing Medicaid and SNAP (food stamps) and turning them into block grants.
Slash funding for K-12 education, Pell Grants, job training, and domestic violence prevention.
And, to add insult to injury, Ryan’s budget would, at the same time:
Give trillions of dollars in new tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and corporations.
Time is running out! Please urge your Representative to vote NO on the Ryan budget.
