Fighting Misinformation about Climate Science

Fox News Channel and the Wall Street Journal Opinion pages are overwhelmingly misleading when it comes to climate science. Not surprised? When UCS reviewed references to climate science in those two news outlets, we found it was even worse than we thought.
Our snapshot analysis shows that over a six-month period at Fox News Channel, 93 percent of the references to climate science were misleading. In one year on the Wall Street Journal Opinion pages, 81 percent of the references were misleading.
Last month, we released the findings of this snapshot analysis at a series of events in New York City, finishing the day by delivering nearly 20,000 comments from UCS supporters to the headquarters of News Corporation, which owns Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, asking them to stop failing science and improve how they represent climate science.
Watch the video of UCS climate scientist Dr. Brenda Ekwurzel correcting the climate science inaccuracies on a six-foot tall Wall Street Journal op-ed in Bryant Park.

She and other UCS staff were joined by dozens of UCS supporters who stamped the op-ed “Not Science” and filled out postcards to News Corp.
Thank you to everyone who took action and spread the word about our findings.

If you haven’t yet, please be sure you ask News Corp. to stop failing science!
Sincerely, JeanSideris_jpg

Don’t mess with an angry librarian … Change.org

By day, Andy Woodworth is a mild-mannered librarian. By night, he’s still a librarian, just less mild-mannered.

Andy is kind of famous in the librarian community, mostly for getting the Old Spice guy to do a video about how great libraries are, and unsuccessfully campaigning to get Ben & Jerry’s to create a flavor called the “Gooey Decimal System.” (If you don’t get the pun, just ask someone ten years older.)

Oh, and now he’s using Change.org to help lead the charge in a fight against NewsCorp, one of the world’s most powerful companies.

http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-harpercollins-limited-checkouts-on-ebooks-is-wrong-for-libraries

See, more and more libraries are beginning to buy e-books, like those read on a Kindle or similar device. They’re programmed to be like normal books — lent out to one reader at a time, returned, and downloaded by another reader. It’s simple, and especially great for working parents or the disabled who have a hard time making it to a library.

But publishing giant HarperCollins (owned by NewsCorp) is trying to force libraries to only buy e-books that literally self-destruct after the 26th reader in an attempt to maximize profits.

Having to repeatedly buy the same book will be a financial and logistical disaster for libraries, one that could force a few to close their doors.

Even worse, there are signs that other publishing companies may soon follow the lead of HarperCollins, which could devastate libraries all around the world.

Some amazing librarians have launched a full boycott of HarperCollins until the decision is reversed, but they urgently need widespread support to force NewsCorp to back down.

Andy’s petition demanding an end to self-destructing e-books has a goal of 100,000 signatures — click here to add your name now:

Andy declares on his blog that “The world needs more badass librarians.” It’s true, though right now the world also needs more readers who will stand alongside them.

Thanks for doing your part,

Patrick and the Change.org team

A message from Ari Rabin-Havt

Media Matters September 29, 2010

President Obama recently sat down with Rolling Stone magazine and offered his thoughts on our political and media climate. He also had some strong words for Fox News:

It is part of the tradition that has a very clear, undeniable point of view…It’s a point of view that I think is ultimately destructive for the long-term growth of a country that has a vibrant middle class and is competitive in the world.

He’s right. Since President Obama was inaugurated last year, Fox has undergone a transformation from a conservative-leaning news source to, as Fox News’ senior Vice President put it, “the voice of the opposition.”

On issues ranging from taxes to health care to the environment, the role of Islam to the role of unions, Fox acts like a political operation, not a news network. Fox’s “opinion” and “news” hosts routinely select whatever facts they need or advance falsehoods to sell the network’s conservative political agenda. In so doing, Fox pushes messages intended not to make people more informed, but to inspire fear and anger in its audience. What’s even more dangerous is that Fox provides a platform not just for a political party‘s talking points, but for racially charged attacks and religious smears.

Stand up to Fox — support Media Matters for America today.

Through its on-air promotion of Republican candidates and causes, its support for, and cheerleading of, the Tea Party movement, its tolerance of extreme rhetoric and willingness to ignore facts, Fox News is distorting the political process.

Every day, Media Matters for America stands up to the lies and smears Fox and its allies in the conservative media try to advance. We expose the extreme rhetoric that would otherwise fly below the radar and we counter falsehoods with facts, putting a halt to the smears and misinformation before they become accepted fact. Stand with us and help us carry on this important task.

Stand up to Fox — support Media Matters for America today.

Thank you for your support.
