Chicken of the Sea’s Recipe for Disaster … Casson Trenor, Greenpeace

Take a random floating object, attach a radio beacon to it, and drop it in the ocean. Let it soak for a few weeks, then come back with a giant net and scoop up everything in sight.

That’s how Chicken of the Sea catches tuna — a deadly combination of fish aggregating devices (FADs) and massive seine nets. This indiscriminate practice is causing tremendous harm to our oceans, including the needless deaths of tens of thousands of sharks, rays, and baby tuna every year.

We launched our campaign to get Chicken of the Sea to clean up their act back in August with a video by Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Mark Fiore. That video received such a strong response from the company and the rest of the tuna industry that we decided to make another. This time, we’re taking a closer look at their destructive practices, and offering indisputable evidence of their activities: actual footage of FAD-driven carnage on the high seas.

Help us keep the pressure on and check it out. Our goal is to hit 25,000 views in the first 48 hours.Simply click on the image below to watch the video and be sure to share it on Facebook and Twitter after you’ve watched it…

Chicken of the Sea's Recipe for Disaster

Chicken of the Sea and the entire tuna industry is scared. They’re scared that the public is going to find out the truth about what they are doing. So they’ve spent the last couple of months and untold amounts of money hiring expensive PR firms to attack Greenpeace, hoping that this will distract the public and confuse the issue.

But each and every person who watches this video and becomes aware of our campaign makes it a little bit harder for them to hide the truth. Take a moment and watch it yourself and then pass it along on Facebook and Twitter.

For the oceans,

The Tuna Industry’s Dirty Little Secret

There’s a lot more to a can of tuna than the friendly looking label might suggest. Behind every happy bumble bee and smiling mermaid there’s an ocean of destruction.

That’s why Greenpeace is launching a new campaign to get the canned tuna industry to clean up its act and end its destructive ways. And to kick things off we’ve teamed up with Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Mark Fiore on a brand new video to expose the industry’s dirty little secret.

Our goal is to reach 25,000 views in the first 48 hours. If we do that, we have a great chance of giving the video the momentum it needs to really get the tuna industry’s attention.

Together we have already transformed the supermarket seafood industry in this country — getting companies like Costco, Trader Joe’s and Target to adopt real sustainable seafood policies. Now it’s time to take on the companies most responsible for ocean destruction in the United States.

You’ll be hearing a lot more about this campaign in the weeks and months to come. I can’t wait to get started.

In the meantime, check out the video and pass it along on Facebook and Twitter. The more we spread the word the faster we expose the tuna industry’s dirty little secret and save the oceans.

Sincerely,

Casson Trenor

I am an outlaw

Just one week ago, I published an expose in the New York Times. It was my life story. I am an undocumented immigrant, an outlaw in my own country.

In the days since, I have been drowning in media requests, tearful letters, and powerful Facebook messages. I want to thank all of the individuals who have both challenged and supported me, and ask those who have not yet done so to join me.

I’ve left my job as a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and come out about my immigration status because it’s long past time to strike up a more civil, inclusive debate about immigration in America. It’s a risk, but I have a unique story to tell, and I was tired of staying silent.

Now, I’m launching the project “Define American.”     http://www.change.org/petitions/stand-with-me-jose-antonio-vargas-for-a-new-conversation-about-immigration?utm_source=action_alert&utm_medium=email&alert_id=priUkRVDLL_INmaVodArs

We may not all agree on how to fix it, but one thing we can all agree on is that our immigration debate is out of control and our immigration system is badly broken. I believe not only that we can do better, but that we must.

Will you sign the pledge to stand with me, Jose Antonio Vargas, in calling for a new national conversation on immigration? http://www.change.org/petitions/stand-with-me-jose-antonio-vargas-for-a-new-conversation-about-immigration?utm_source=action_alert&utm_medium=email&alert_id=priUkRVDLL_INmaVodArs

Some would say my story is the tale of a hard-working immigrant who defines the American dream: achieving success against great odds, working hard, and even earning a Pulitzer Prize for my reporting. Still, despite everything I’ve achieved, the law still says I am not technically an American. I am undocumented.

I want to ask my fellow Americans: What would you do, if you found out at age 16 that you didn’t have the right papers? As a journalist, my job is to ask questions that spark conversation. Now I am asking you to join in that conversation.

Sign the pledge to “Define American,” share it with everyone you know, and then leave us a comment about what you would do if you found out you were undocumented. I will bring your comments and stories with me as I head to the next round of media interviews.   http://www.change.org/petitions/stand-with-me-jose-antonio-vargas-for-a-new-conversation-about-immigration?utm_source=action_alert&utm_medium=email&alert_id=priUkRVDLL_INmaVodArs

We all have a story to tell, so let’s talk. Let’s debate. Most importantly, let’s listen.

All the best,

– Jose

It’s dirty trick #1 in the Rove playbook

Only 19 Days Left Until The Election When you’ve got dirty laundry, don’t apologize for it. Instead, just throw it at your opponent.

That’s exactly what the Republican attack squad is trying to pull off.

They’re claiming that my fellow House Democrats who consistently stand up for good paying American jobs are actually the ones to blame for jobs getting shipped overseas. Worse yet, they’re relying on millions of dollars from pro-outsourcing special interests to launch their attacks. Shameless.

We can’t let their lies take hold because we failed to act. The DCCC has got rapid response ads ready to fight back with the truth, but we simply must raise $117,337 more by tomorrow’s ad buy deadline to get them on the air.

Contribute $5, $10 or more to House Democrats’ October Rapid Response Fund before tonight’s Midnight Tomorrow and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of committed Democrats. Your generous support is urgently needed to help our Democratic candidates fight back against Republican attacks.

It won’t surprise you that the Pulitzer Prize winning Politifact called the Republicans’ baseless attacks “FALSE.” It would be comical if the stakes of this election weren’t so high.

With early voting already under way, sitting on our hands is not an option. We all know what happens when you let smears like this go unchallenged. None of us can afford to look back on Election Day wishing we did more to fight back. And we certainly can’t let the Republicans and their front groups dominate the airwaves in the final days of this Election.

A gift of $10 will go a long way to getting ads on the air before tomorrow’s midnight deadline hits.

Thank you for standing with us.

Urgent Update: GOP’s Deceptive Ads and Expanding their Ad Buy

Rapid Reponse

Breaking: Republicans expand ad buys into seven additional districts bringing the total to over 60 races.

With just 24 hours to go before our ad buy deadline, news reports broke yesterday that the Republicans’ campaign attack squad has expanded their advertising blitz.

The claims in Republican ads have already been debunked by the Pulitzer Prize winning PolitiFact. Yet, they now have the resources to EXPAND their false attacks into more districts. It’s Rove-style dirty politics at its worst.

It’s up to us to set the record straight but we have to go all-in before tomorrow’s deadline hits.

We have just 24 hours left before our deadline to wire more money for ads but we’re still $72,179 short.

Please contribute $5, $10 or more to our Rapid Response Ad Fund today and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of committed Democrats.

We can stop them — we have done it before. But I need you to help us stand up to their smears.

Onward to Victory,

Jon Vogel

P.S. We have set up a Tip Box to report abusive or deceptive robocalls, mailers, or internet scams/rumors. If you see this kind of widespread abuse in your district, you should send a message to our Tip Box by emailing at dccc@dccc.org. Please contribute to our Rapid Response Ad Fund now so we can continue to keep fighting back.
