Have you had enough of lawmakers attacking reproductive rights?

National Women's Law Center
Just in the last few months we’ve seen countless attempts to restrict women’s reproductive health care. Opponents have tacked anti-abortion provisions onto unrelated bills and passed restrictions in special secret, last-minute sessions. They’ve mocked pro-choice protesters by handing them cookies. And they continue to tell women we don’t know what’s best when it comes to our own reproductive health care.
I’ve had enough. Have you?
This August, we’re declaring 31 Days of Unity. It’s a time to come together, join our voices, and tell lawmakers we will not stand for more attacks on our reproductive rights.
This year, despite all the attacks, we’ve seen support for women’s health care grow. There have been inspirational filibusters, rallies across the nation, and unprecedented activism — proving that when our community stands together, we have the power to enact change.
Will you add your voice?
Every day this August, reproductive rights, health, and justice groups across the nation are uniting to call on lawmakers to stop the attacks on equal access to safe, legal, affordable reproductive health care for all women. Together, we know we can make our voices loud enough to be heard.
Raise your voice! Tell lawmakers to end the attacks on reproductive health care.
Summer may be coming to an end, but unless we speak up, attacks on reproductive health care will continue. Demand that your representatives in Congress and in the states defend women’s reproductive health care.
Thank you for all you do.
Sincerely,
Judy Waxman Judy Waxman Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights National Women’s Law Center

Singled out …

National Women's Law Center
Demand Coverage for Peace Corps Volunteers
Tell your Senators Peace Corps Volunteers deserve equal access to health care coverage.
Take Action

Since 1961, Peace Corps Volunteers have provided an invaluable service to the U.S. and to the countries with which we partner to foster peace and development. Yet when it comes to their own health and well-being, female volunteers are singled out — and some are denied health care coverage they vitally need.
Currently, Peace Corps Volunteers are denied coverage for abortion — even when the pregnancy threatens her life, or if she is a survivor of rape or incest. But recently, the Senate Appropriations Committee took an important first step in addressing the fact that Peace Corps Volunteers do not get the same coverage for their reproductive health as employees of the Peace Corps itself and others who get their health insurance through the federal government.
We need your help to make sure this inequity ends. Tell your Senators Peace Corps Volunteers deserve equal access to health care coverage.
More than 60 percent of the more than 8,000 Peace Corps Volunteers are women. But under the current policy, these women may have to forgo life-saving medical treatment — or endure an unwanted pregnancy resulting from a sexual assault. At the same time, other women who receive health care coverage through the federal government do get abortion coverage in these cases. This is unfair.
We need you to make sure your Senators are committed to changing this policy.
Tell your Senators to end this inequity and ensure Peace Corps Volunteers get the coverage they need.
Sincerely,

Judy Waxman Judy Waxman Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights National Women’s Law Center

Here are some things we don’t think you should be punished for:

  • Having a chronic disease.
  • Taking care of an elderly parent.
  • Living in a neighborhood where exercising outdoors isn’t safe.

Seems obvious, right? But a loophole in the health care law could do just that.
We need your help to close a loophole in the health care law that could punish low-income women and women with chronic diseases. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently released proposed rules on the health care law’s wellness program that would increase premiums and out-of-pocket costs for individuals who do not or cannot participate in certain wellness activities, such as an exercise program. Help us make sure that employer-sponsored wellness programs don’t penalize women and their families.
Programs that increase premiums or out-of-pocket costs for individuals who do not participate in employer-run wellness programs could cause women who hold more than one job, who have childcare or eldercare responsibilities, or health conditions that restrict their ability to participate in program activities to pay more for health coverage or health care. And they ignore other economic and environmental barriers to improving health for low-income women and the fact that women who are pregnant or breast feeding might be medically-advised against participating in certain activities, such as a weight-loss program.
You have less than a week to make your voice heard! The IRS is only taking comments about its proposed rules on the health care law’s wellness program until July 2. That’s why we need you to make your voice heard today.
Going to the gym and eating healthy foods are good goals but easier for some than others. If your neighborhood grocery store doesn’t have fresh vegetables, you have children or elderly family to care for, or your community doesn’t have an affordable gym or sidewalks for you to walk and run on— it may be nearly impossible to be part of a program that requires you to participate to keep your health insurance premiums or out of pocket costs affordable.
Take action now.
Thank you for all you do for women and families.
Sincerely,

Raped and Then Denied the Care They Need – Not on Our Watch

National Women's Law Center
NWLC supporters have already sent nearly 15,000 letters to Senators asking them to support the Peace Corps Equity Act.
Can you help us get to 20,000 letters?

Take action now and tell your Senators today to end the extreme policy that prohibits women in the Peace Corps who become pregnant due to rape or whose life is at risk because of a pregnancy from getting an abortion.
As always — thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Judy Waxman  Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights  National Women’s Law Center

End the Extreme Policy
Tell your Senators to support the Peace Corps Equity Act and end the extreme abortion coverage ban for Peace Corps volunteers in the case of rape, incest and life endangerment.
Take Action

No woman should ever be denied an abortion, especially in the cases of rape, incest, or when the woman’s life is at risk. Period. And yet extreme policies currently exist that deny certain women coverage for abortion services in these difficult and, sometimes, life-threatening situations.
It’s time to end the unconscionable ban on abortion coverage for Peace Corps volunteers in the cases of rape, incest and life endangerment to the woman. Tell your Senators to support the Peace Corps Equity Act to end this extreme policy.
The Peace Corps is a federal program that sends over 8,000 American volunteers abroad each year to promote world peace and friendship. Women make up more than 60 percent of these volunteers. And though other women who receive health care coverage through the federal government have coverage of abortion in cases of rape, incest, and to protect the life of the woman, Peace Corps volunteers are prohibited from receiving the same coverage as federal employees.
The Peace Corps Equity Act will end this extreme policy by expanding access to reproductive health care in cases of rape, incest and life endangerment. Tell your Senators to support this legislation today.
Just last year, National Women’s Law Center supporters sent over 70,000 messages successfully urging lawmakers to give U.S. military women the same reproductive health coverage as their civilian counterparts. We’ve shown that, together, we can end such unconscionable and harmful policies.
Thank you for everything you do to protect women’s reproductive health.
Sincerely,

Judy Waxman Judy Waxman Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights National Women’s Law Center

Every 11 hours

NARAL Pro-Choice America

Ilyse G. Hogue President, NARAL Pro-Choice America

Every 11 hours we move closer and closer to a world without the rights we’ve fought so hard to preserve.

That’s because every 11 hours, another piece of anti-choice legislation is introduced somewhere in America. Nearly 300 anti-choice legislative attacks have been introduced in Congress and in states across the country this year — and the year isn’t even half over. That’s more than two anti-choice bills for every single day of the year so far.

But, before the next anti-choice legislative attack is introduced, you have time to make a difference by helping NARAL Pro-Choice America track and defeat anti-choice legislation — protecting women’s reproductive rights across the country.

Please make an urgent contribution to NARAL Pro-Choice America before another 11 hours pass.

We’re watching every single one of these legislative attacks. We’re fighting them in Congress. We’re fighting them in the states. We’re fighting for women. But the clock is ticking.

Before extreme anti-choice politicians have time to make another move, please stand with us.

Together, we can make choice real for all women. Are you with us? Tick, tock, tick, tock …
