No tar sands oil in our backyards …Rainforest Action Network

What would you do if an oil company was planning to build a pipeline through your back yard?

For me, that question is a very real one. Four years ago, I discovered survey crews trespassing on my land East Texas, staking out a path for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

That’s where my journey to stop this pipeline began. Since then I’ve organized other landowners, lobbied lawmakers and petitioned banks to halt financing for Keystone XL, and now I’m hitting the road.

Follow the Stop The Pipeline Tour from August 20-September 3, as fellow landowners and I wind along the proposed pipeline route to share our story and the potential effects of Keystone XL.    http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=S0MiVnDFmfgiNwQvKiH%2B13ZA%2B2vgGlYH

The Stop The Pipeline Tour will take us to meet with concerned citizens, debate TransCanada face-to-face, visit the Kalamazoo oil spill site, and educate the public before heading east to Washington D.C. for the massive Tar Sands Action with Bill McKibben, Danny Glover,  Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Klein, Clayton Thomas-Muller, students, scientists, climate activists and more.

We are standing up to defend our rights and oppose this dangerous pipeline. We want water that’s safe to drink, land that’s fit for our families, and a way of life free from the threats and harassment from corporate oil thugs.

Please stand with us! If you can’t join us in D.C., sign and share this petition telling President Obama to block the Keystone XL.   http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=S0MiVnDFmfgiNwQvKiH%2B13ZA%2B2vgGlYH

Within the next four months, the U.S. State Department and President Obama will decide whether to approve the Keystone XL pipeline that would pump nearly one million barrels of toxic tar sands oil per day through pristine rural landscape that I, and thousands more, call home.

Help us protect our home. The struggle we face is one that all of us must win, as oil and natural gas companies get more desperate for product by the day and turn their sites on the next unsuspecting community.

 Sincerely

FW: Pay-Per-View Government?

We’ve seen reports that at least two more Republican members of Congress — Reps. Lou Barletta (R-PA) and Renee Ellmers (R-NC) — are avoiding public constituent meetings this August recess, opting instead for the “pay per view” events Michael wrote to you about last week. This new “pay per view” practice mocks the spirit of Democracy and the First Amendment, and tends to weed out non-supporters in order to shield members of Congress from criticism or even challenging questions.

Speak out now by signing our petition to members of Congress — help us keep the heat on these representatives to hold them accountable and make them stop.   www.pfaw.org

By voting for policies as unpopular as the ones congressional Republicans have recently supported, like ending Medicare and Medicaid as we know it, it’s understandable that these representatives would attract some criticism, but denying their constituents free access to them so they can cravenly hide from that criticism is wrong.

Re: Pay-Per-View Government?

Tell Members of Congress: Respect the First Amendment and Democracy, Stop Charging Your Constituents for Access!

 Dear Ben,

It seems that congressional Republicans either have a severe distaste for, or a severe lack of understanding of, the First Amendment of the Constitution.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) is not holding any open-to-the-public town hall meetings in his district this August recess — instead, he’s charging constituents $15 for face time with their democratically elected representative. And Ryan isn’t the only member of congress whose recess meetings are, as Politico put it, “strictly pay-per-view.”

Speak out by joining our petition to members of Congress now and help us draw attention to this growing problem.       www.pfaw.org

Congressmen like Ben Quayle (R-AZ) and Chip Cravaack (R-MN), instead of hosting town hall meetings, are having events hosted for them by friendly organizations with a fee for attendance. These Republican members of Congress are so desperate to shelter themselves from criticism that they are denying their constituents’ basic democratic access to their elected officials.

The First Amendment states that Americans have the right to “petition the Government for a redress of grievances” and does NOT include the words “only if they are willing and able to pay for that privilege.” What Ryan and his colleagues are doing is an affront to American democracy AND to the First Amendment.

Exercise YOUR First Amendment right and petition Congress now.

Selective disregard of the Constitution by the Right Wing is nothing new, but this latest wave of hostility to the First Amendment is so cowardly and begs for a light to be shined on it and for accountability for the elected officials engaged in it.

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO) recently had a sign reading, “Private Property: No soliciting, No protesting, No loitering,” appear outside his district office. This was in response to protests by progressive activists after Lamborn referred to President Obama as a “tar baby.” However, the restriction appeared not to apply to Lamborn’s supporters who held a “spontaneous” rally outside the office on Friday.

The “no protesting” portion was removed after Lamborn received pressure for his selective allowance of free speech at his congressional office and his blatant disregard for the spirit of the First Amendment. Now we need to make sure all members of Congress are receiving similar pressure.

Help us keep up the pressure by speaking up and joining PFAW’s petition now.

Since voting on many anti-middle class policies, especially the “Ryan Plan” attacks on Medicare and Medicaid, Republican members of Congress have been facing angry constituents at town hall meetings and protests at their offices. That’s called democracy — elected officials being held accountable by their constituents.

By outsourcing meetings to third parties that raise money on the events, members of Congress are ducking all but their most supportive constituents, and in some cases, creating a misleading media narrative by allowing in local reporters and TV cameras.

If these Republican members of Congress are so scared of Democracy, then they’re in the wrong business.

Please help us keep the pressure on by joining our petition and then by helping to spread the word.

As always, thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Michael Keegan

We can’t let them get away with it

Dirty coal power plants are causing children asthma attacks and their parents heart attacks – all while leaking toxic chemicals into local tap water. This is simply unacceptable.

Up to 34,000 people – many children – are killed by pollution from coal plants every year.  At one plant in Portland, PA 30 people die prematurely a year!

Right now, owners of obsolete, dangerous coal plants around the country – like the one in Portland – are considering spending billions of dollars to keep these killers open. With an aggressive campaign right now, we can rally communities and shut the plants down. Can you help?

Please donate by midnight tonight  to help shut these worst-of-the-worst plants down. We need just 14 donations to reach our goal of $34,000 – one dollar for every coal-related death we must stop.

A drunk driver that kills one person faces justice. But what does a company whose pollution kills 30 children and adults get? Four years to slightly reduce its pollution – and a free pass to keep killing hundreds even after its facelift. I’m not ok with that.

What’s worse, it’s children who pay the highest price. The Portland coal plant alone causes five hundred asthma attacks a year. Right now, somewhere in Pennsylvania, one of those children with asthma is struggling to breathe. We don’t know her name, but we know she’s one of hundreds and could be the next victim if we don’t act now. Fight back >>

Just a few weeks ago, the owners of the half-century-old plant in Portland began reviewing whether to spend up to half a billion dollars to keep the plant open and continue to spew toxins into the air and water. We need to act now before they make a final decision.

We’ve seen what’s possible when we fight on the ground to expose the truth, mobilize local communities, and unite national opposition with grassroots action. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen the dirty coal plant in Salem, Mass and the Beckjord plant in Ohio announce shut-down plans – though we’ll keep fighting until they close their doors for good.

We can and must stop the coal industry from taking our children’s lives and their futures – but we need you to step up before midnight tonight.

Please help end the Portland plant’s reign of terror and stop other deadly plants like it. We need just 14 gifts from Washington to reach our goal of $34,000 – one dollar for every coal-related death we can prevent when we quit coal. Deadline: midnight tonight.

Coal-fired power plants kill in many ways ranging from coal ash to toxic emittants to being the biggest source of man-made CO2 emissions. But the coal industry has given millions in campaign contributions to buy a free pass – and leave children and families paying the cost of their dirty business.

If we have the strength to act urgently, we will save lives. Are you in? We have this moment to do right by our planet and right by our children.

Join me in quitting coal,

Philip Radford, Greenpeace

P.S. Please make your donation by midnight tonight on our secure website or by calling 1-800-792-6995. We need just 14 donors from Washington to step up.Thank you

hump day and some News …

just another rant …but it’s not mine

featured picture is of WA’s 520bridge, which will be under construction…or retrofitted …it is from the DOT website

In my effort to help give more awareness to immigration, reform and what it means to America, which, as we all know is not just sensitive but a controversial topic, it tends to get responses that are very supportive or are extremely negative  . Please don’t get me wrong, i appreciate the responses. So , if we agree to disagree but feel passionate about a topic or two … so be it!  So, just to give a background; originally i posted the announcement given by email to all who support immigration reform and President Obama, an adjustment to immigration rules:below you can find the statement from Katherine Archuleta, a link to sign the petition and a call to stand with President Obama  …also, the  repsonse and objection to immigration as well as reform which some feel is a disguise for amnesty… sigh. My response was that i did not respond well to statements in CAPITAL LETTERS and a rundown of my racial background …

In a smart, strategic change to our immigration policy, President Obama is making sure that our immigration courts will focus on cases involving people who have committed crimes or are a security risk, rather than on “low-priority” cases involving young people who were brought here as small children and know no other home, or veterans and military spouses. Show you stand with him by passing on this good news to your friends:

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT LIED TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN 1986, WHEN THEY ENACTED THE IMMIGRATION CONTROL AND REFORM ACT. What makes you think they are not lying to us again?

Millions were given Amnesty under the Simpson/Mazzoli bill, with an outcome of 6 million and a path to citizenship. A good many had rushed processing, with major problems they way it was originally performed. On top of this was CHAIN MIGRATION, which added even more family members, which ended up eating away at Social Security safety net, with not a dime coming from their pockets. Each year taxpayers are forced by the court to care financially for illegal aliens and their children. Over a 100 billion a year is drained from the US treasury and States, with no end in sight. President Obama cannot survive the 2012 election campaign, without the vote of maximum number of minorities, legal and illegal.

In America since the immigration lax enforcement, the criminals from the dregs of the gutters have been turning up here. Hit and run drivers have been escalating, along with drunken foreigners who have been mowing down innocent citizens. The worst states on the borders are full of drug dealers, people smugglers, children and women molesters and heinous murders. This is the abject time when E-verify must be mandated for every workplace and “Secure Communities” must be enforced to its full capability.

The Democratic parties, with Liberal undertones are unconcerned that–ONLY—U.S. citizens can vote? Learn about widespread voter fraud, that the US government pretends is negligible–it’s not? More is available to read at “Judicial Watch” that illustrates that both Washington and certain states are rife with corruption. Our last hope is the TEA PARTY, THE PEOPLE’S PARTY of all Americans, who will turn the tide of Obama’s executive order to limit the flow of illegal alien deportations. Just like the President Obama’s health care program, his executive order is full of gaping loopholes, so there is convincing probability that illegal aliens will be returned to the streets.

Rest assured the word is already out about Obama’s clemency campaign that will invigorate millions to arrive from around the world; but mostly from countries south of the US border.

THE ONLY STATES THAT ARE SAFE FROM ECONOMICAL OCCUPATION OF ILLEGAL ALIENS IS ARIZONA, ALABAMA AND GEORGIA. THEIR LEGISLATORS DECIDED TO ENACT POLICING LAWS, SO THEIR CITIZENS AND RESIDENTS DIDN’T GET STUCK WITH UNFUNDED MANDATE BILLS FROM WASHINGTON. STATES THAT REMAIN UNCONCERNED ABOUT THEIR LEGAL POPULATIONS, SUCH AS CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA, WHO ARE NOW DEMANDING MORE TAXES TO PAY FOR THESE INCURSIONS. BOTH STATES ARE STRAINING AGAINST LIBERAL POLITICIANS, GIVING UNHEARD OF WELFARE PAYMENTS.

Taxpayers are already being forced to pay for the education, medical care and welfare for illegal migrants and immigrants? So how much more money is citizens and residents expected to pay from their dwindling wages? Illegal alien children are well taken care of with your tax dollars that includes food stamps and cash payments. While many American citizens live in dire poverty. Something is seriously wrong with this picture?

The TEA PARTY has become a mammoth grassroots movement of tens of millions of one- minded Americans from all racial and religious backgrounds, political parties, no matter what the Leftists party blabber? The TEA PARTY members have the shared focused values of limited government, individual freedoms, personal responsibility, “fair” free markets and above all else returning authority to the States and the people. We need a flat tax system, so that everybody whose domain is the United States-pays. No more IRS loopholes to escape through? The TEA PARTY is about reforming all political parties and control, so the key principles of our US Constitution, once again is the foundation on which this nation stands. The TEA PARTY is the hope of America’s future; for without it the rot will continue to eat away in House & Senate. The TEA PARTY will enforce the 1986 (ICRA), with no further Amnesties, ever.
