Last month, a series of police and military actions in the remote forests of Brazil’s Tapajós basin struck at the foundation of a flourishing criminal gold mining network. Acting upon information provided by Munduruku leadership seeking to end this toxic industry, law enforcement destroyed heavy equipment, fined wildcat miners, and raided the offices of local gold traders.
These actions signaled decreasing government tolerance for extensive illegal mining operations in the Brazilian Amazon. The government action that followed, however, set ambiguous precedents for future enforcement and led to intensified direct threats upon Munduruku leaders fighting to defend their lands and culture from more mining.

We released the following in response to the latest developments around Seattle’s progressive business tax, and wanted to share it with our members & supporters across the state — then let us know what you think!
“Poverty wages and income inequality are driving our city’s affordable housing crisis: the most common reasons people in our community lose their housing are because they lose their jobs, they can’t make the rent, or their employers just don’t pay them enough to support themselves.
But instead of stepping up and doing their part to address a housing crisis they helped create, some of the largest corporations and richest humans in the world have invested big money to mislead voters about Seattle’s progressive business tax.
They’ve formed an alliance with extremists. They’ve made clear they have the resources to bankroll many more months of nastiness. And they seem willing to pick a vicious and unnecessary fight with poor people and with the people who work to provide housing, services, and jobs.
This is not the Seattle we call home.
Instead of turning our city’s future over to the loudest, richest, and ugliest voices, let’s return the conversation to the broad consensus we know is out there for a compassionate approach to invest in our housing crisis. Let’s find solutions that ensure people who work in our city can afford to live here, too; that life-saving services are available to those in need; and that big businesses do their part — just like workers, homeowners, renters, and consumers do.”
So… what’s next?
The Seattle City Council voted to repeal the big business tax today. It’s a tough moment, but some councilmembers are still looking for a way forward to ensure that big businesses do their part to address our housing and homelessness crisis. So we’re asking our members & supporters: what do you think our next step should be?
People lose their homes when rent rises: Research shows that every $100 increase in rent is associated with a 15% increase in homelessness.
Rent is rising rapidly: Gross median rent in Seattle has increased from $990 in 2010 to $1448 in 2016 (the latest figures available) — a total increase of almost $500/month.
People lose their homes when they don’t have income to support themselves: The Point in Time Count shows the most common reason homeless people report they lost their housing is because they lost their jobs. The overwhelming number of other reasons cited are also directly tied to lack of stable, sustainable financial resources.
These students won’t back down, and neither will we.
Supreme Court Justice Kennedy is retiring, creating another vacancy on the Court this coming August. And none other than Kentucky Senator Mitch “I Stole A Supreme Court Pick From President Obama” McConnell actually had the audacity to say that “It’s imperative that the President’s nominee be treated fairly.” Just…really? Really?
Students to Notre Dame & Trump: Hands Off Our Birth Control!
Last fall, the Trump-Pence administration issued two rules intended to let employers and universities deny insurance coverage for birth control in direct violation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Not just one, but two federal courts blocked those rules. But rather than accepting those courts’ decisions on the matter, the Trump-Pence administration began entering into secretive, illegal settlement agreements with dozens of companies and universities to empower them to flout the law and deny birth control coverage to thousands of people.
That’s why we and our partners at Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and the Center for Reproductive Rights filed suit Tuesday on behalf of a group of undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Notre Dame affected by this shady attempt to erode their reproductive rights. We’re suing the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury, and Labor, as well as Notre Dame, to make it very clear that these underhanded attacks on our birth control and our bodies will not stand unchallenged.
