We’re reaching out to you directly because you already may be familiar with NOM Exposed, the project of the Human Rights Campaign and Courage Campaign dedicated to revealing the truth about the so-called National Organization of Marriage. Chances are you’ve read our posts on NOM’s leading role in the states, or caught our latest video trying to get NOM’s required federal tax returns.

You signed onto “NOM Doesn’t Speak for Me!” – a vehicle we’re using to let lawmakers and the media know how out-of-touch and radical NOM really is. But now, with marriage battles looming in 2011, and with NOM promising to wage war on LGBT families, we need your help.

We need eyes and ears on the ground, to make sure that we fully document the hostile, anti-gay environment NOM helps create. We must hold NOM and its followers accountable and alert both the media and voters to their radical ties and agenda.

This fringe group is gearing up to undo marriage equality in states where it is currently legal and to stop marriage in other states where it could become legal. These people won’t give up until marriage equality is banned nationwide.

That’s where you come in. Become a “NOM Watcher.” We’re looking for people from all walks of life to report on and help us challenge NOM activities in the states. Check out our new tracker map to see where NOM might be next. In the coming weeks, we’ll be providing specific steps you can take locally as a NOM Watcher.

a message from Speaker Pelosi …


Happy New Year! And as we prepare to ring in the new year, I wanted to reach out and thank you for your commitment to our country and your dedication to making change a reality for millions of our fellow Americans.

But our work is far from done.

Shadowy special interest front groups are already up on radio and television with shameful attack ads aimed at reversing the progress we’ve made, and they’re hoping grassroots Democrats like you will stay on the sidelines until New Year’s. If Democrats fall behind in these final critical days, we’ll have to spend months playing catch-up while the opponents of progress ring in 2011 with a big head start on their repeal agenda.

December 31st marks the final FEC deadline of the year. That means my friends at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) have just 5 days to show the media, the pundits, and our opponents that Democrats are ready to stand up to the powerful special interests intent on rolling back the progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Carmen, can you chip in $10 to help House Democrats raise the $250,000 they need before the year-end FEC deadline on December 31st? This deadline is so important that your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of generous Democrats.

Because of the hard work of grassroots Democrats like you, we passed historic health care reform, restored common sense regulation to Wall Street, helped ensure equal pay for equal work, and made a college education affordable for millions of young Americans.

Urge EPA and DOT to clean up our nation’s trucks
Dear Carmen,

Thanks to UCS supporters like you, packages across the country are now spreading the word that our nation’s trucks should get a whole lot cleaner. But now it’s time to share our Ship it Green! holiday spirit with decision makers as well.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) are currently accepting public comments on the first-ever national fuel economy and emissions regulations for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

Please tell them that, from holiday packages shipped to far away friends and family, to the abundance of goods that crisscross our country daily, we deserve a truck fleet that minimizes pollution and oil use.

[object Object]Trucks account for only four percent of all the vehicles on our nation’s roads, but they use 20 percent of our fuel. The technology already exists to make these vehicles cleaner, and everyone benefits when we have more efficient trucks on the roads—we get cleaner air and we can help break our dependence on oil.

So send a message to the EPA and DOT today—just think of it as a holiday card to our government telling them it’s okay to be a Scrooge when it comes to fuel consumption!

I know you must have been disappointed when you saw my earlier email tonight saying that the U.S. Senate stopped action on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal, the discriminatory law that bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. This news certainly draws attention to the actions the President can take to end the discharges, and it’s important that we continue to urge him to do so. Aside from that, I also wanted to share some late breaking news that keeps congressional repeal as a possibility THIS YEAR.

After the failed vote to bring up the Defense Authorization bill today, two champions for repeal – Senators Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins – announced that they would introduce repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as a stand-alone piece of legislation. While passing this new bill will be an uphill battle, it is another chance for a durable legislative solution.

Over the past few days we’ve seen a number of senators speak out for repeal and it’s clear that under the right circumstances, we can get above the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. What got in the way today was procedure.

Thankfully a bipartisan group of senators has committed to finding an alternative method of achieving repeal. We encourage all senators to take up this bill and pass it quickly so that the military has the power to implement a repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

I’ll be in touch in the coming days to give you ways to get involved and help pass this stand-alone bill to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” The fight for open service has had many twists and turns but until “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is left in the dustbin of history we will never give up the fight.

Pregnancy — a blessing or a death threat?

Francisca gave birth at home because there was no health center nearby in rural Nicaragua. She was lucky — she didn’t endure complications during pregnancy or childbirth. But hundreds of thousands of women and their babies are not as fortunate. Almost every minute of the day a pregnant woman needlessly dies because she can’t get trained medical assistance in time.

Inspired by delivering her own child, Francisca became a community midwife. She’s delivered dozens of healthy babies. Thanks to CARE‘s comprehensive midwife training programs, Francisca’s also saving the lives of mothers. You can help, too, by making a tax-deductible gift to support CARE’s work around the world.

Pregnancy should be a time to celebrate, not a time to fear death. But, in some poor countries, one in seven women die during pregnancy and childbirth. These women aren’t dying because the health community doesn’t know how to prevent their deaths. They are dying because the world doesn’t care enough. Do you?

Women’s lives should be saved because they matter — as humans, as mothers and as valuable contributors to society. At CARE, we’ve learned that healthy mothers are one of the keys to overcoming poverty — they can give their children the foundation they need to chart their way out of poverty for good. Healthy moms have a better chance at giving birth to babies who can thrive and grow up strong, and healthy moms are more likely to earn an income and send their children to school.

That’s why CARE made reducing maternal mortality one of our top priorities. From training women like Francisca to be midwives to educating families about reproductive health, CARE helps save lives and empowers women to create a brighter future for themselves, their families and their communities.
