The StudentDebtCrisis.org Chatroom is Now Open!

Ever feel as if there’s nobody you can talk to about your student debt situation?  Feeling alone with nowhere to turn?  At StudentDebtCrisis.org, we know how difficult it can be for some folks to navigate the world of student loans all on their own.
That’s why we just installed a brand new chatroom on our website.  We envision this chatroom to be a safe, judgement-free space where you can talk honestly and openly about your student loans with similarly-situated people who understand exactly what you’re dealing with.
The chatroom is open 24/7 for everyone to use, however; we also plan to use this space to have moderated chats on specific topics from time to time.
The topic of the first moderated chat is: The Consequences of Defaulting and How to Avoid That Fate, which will be held on Wednesday, September 18th at 6pm EDT (3pm PDT).  Please mark your calendars accordingly.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.  Now, let’s get to chatting!
Sincerely,
The StudentDebtCrisis.org Team Follow us on Twitter Join us on Facebook
P.S. Don’t forget: there’s still time to submit your own video to the #OutWithStudentDebt Video Project!  Record a 1-2 minute video of yourself talking about how student debt has affected your life, upload it to YouTube using the hashtag #OutWithStudentDebt in the title of the video.  That’s it!  Simple, quick and easy!

Watch As The Lies Fall Apart

Too often on cable news, it seems like everything just goes according to plan. What we’re looking at this week are times when guests have stood up for the truth – even if it didn’t make their hosts happy.

Benghazi Lies, Shot Down

Fox News wanted to spend the first anniversary of the attack on Benghazi the way they had spent the prior year: pushing a cacophany of lies and misinformation. But as Ari Rabin-Havt explains, Fox‘s guests actually knew what they were talking about this time and shot down the lies live on air. http://mm4a.org/17qBk7l Related: The complete explainer of every Benghazi lie, from fake concussions to fake emails and everything in between: http://mm4a.org/17VPz2Q

What’s Happening In Oklahoma

An Oklahoma law that’s currently before the Supreme Court forces doctors to ignore safe medical practice for medication abortions. National Review Online would have you believe that Oklahoma legislators know better than doctors — and that abortion access is not under attack. Meagan Hatcher-Mays explains why they’re wrong. http://mm4a.org/1eFhFnS Related: Every show has its detractors (and CNN’s Crossfire is certainly no exception) but the Daily Caller‘s attack on Stephanie Cutter was rank, sexist, and demonstrative of why the Daily Caller is a completely discredited outlet: http://mm4a.org/17O3jhP

Homophobia And Fox News

Fox Sports fired a contributor in part because of homophobic remarks he made while running as a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from Texas. This raises the question: How homophobic does one have to be to get fired from Fox News? Luke Brinker runs down the network’s worst offenders: http://mm4a.org/15TeYHx

FEATURED VIDEO

Despite its best efforts, Fox News’ facade of Benghazi lies occasionally collapsed. Here are 8 times that Fox’s Benghazi charade fell apart: http://mm4a.org/18bK2Jj

NEW MMFA WEB SERIES

We’re excited to launch our original web series After It’s News. A bit cheeky, AIN features original content, an interview, and best of all it’s pretty short. Check it out: http://youtu.be/EQx8nkTBUtU

AMERICAN RACISM

Why are conservative media so often pushing racist arguments? Because the man at the epicenter of it is. A new study shows that Matt Drudge’s race-baiting has skyrocketed since Obama took office. http://mm4a.org/1fGfr5k

Ingrid’s amazing win

Dear friends,

Ingrid, an Avaaz member, helped save a Norwegian woman from being jailed for being raped in Dubai — she started a petition on Avaaz and the social media storm it created kept pressure up on governments to act. Now the woman is free! And it all started with one simple step: click below to start a campaign on an issue you care about, it’s incredibly quick and easy!

Start a petition

Ingrid, an Avaaz member, has used our site to help save a Norwegian woman from being sent to jail for being raped!
Marte Dalelv was sexually assaulted while visiting Dubai, but when she reported it to the police, she was sentenced to 16 months in prison for “extra-marital sex”! When Ingrid read about Marte’s case, she started a petition on Avaaz calling on the Dubai and Norwegian governments to ensure Marte’s release. The petition and the Facebook page she created exploded on social media and people from all over the world signed the petition and flooded the two governments with messages at addresses that Ingrid posted on her Avaaz petition page.
Within days, Marte was released, and the Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide posted a Twitter message saying: “Marte is released! Thanks to everyone who signed up to help.”
Ingrid’s campaign was covered by major media outlets and clearly ramped up the diplomatic pressure to free Marte and bring her home to her family. And it all started with a simple step of starting a petition on the Avaaz community website. Think of an issue you care about and click here to get started — it’s incredibly quick and easy to start a campaign:

The Prime Minister of Norway said,”There is no doubt that attention from around the world, and the tenacity of the foreign ministry … led to this decision.” In just a few minutes, Ingrid started an amazing campaign that helped win over decision makers in Dubai and Norway.
Starting a campaign only takes a few minutes, but the impact of success can last for years. Plus, if the petition gets enough support on its own, the staff at Avaaz could pick up the campaign, add strategic advice, media help, and even send it to a wider list of members. We’ve got tonnes of tips and advice to help you along the way — all it takes is to get started, share your passion and you can be on your way to winning on any issue – local, national or global.
Ingrid wasn’t convinced that starting an online petition would save Marte – but when she and her organisation Partnership for Change saw the impact of their victory, they realised how powerful this easy model can be to get change. Send this email to the people you know who have great ideas about how to make the world a better place or click on the link to be a part of it:

Many Avaaz campaigns have been started by Avaaz members, from bringing hundreds of workers in Bahrain safely home to India, to allowing partners stay in touch with imprisoned love ones in New Mexico. All these took just a few minutes to get started. Let’s become world-changers together and multiply our impact by the thousands.
With hope and excitement for all we can achieve together,
Alice, Emma, Oli, Carol, Ricken, Luca, Laura and the whole Avaaz team

Stand with the people of Richmond

Campaign for a Fair Settlement a project of Action for the Common Good

Take Action

Get more people involved in fighting back against Wall Street bullies by sharing this image or sharing the petition to Stand with Richmond.

Impressive.
We’re getting reports from our partners in California that this is how the people fighting for Local Principal Reduction (LPR) in Richmond are describing all the support and media attention that’s been focused on them since that city started using that policy to move towards helping struggling families stay in their homes.

Thanks to the efforts of supporters like you, 20,000 people have signed on to support Local Principal Reduction and over 6500 have signed on to support Richmond, CA, efforts in particular. Activists at the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) and the Home Defenders League delivered those signatures directly to Wells Fargo branches the same week the Wells CEO, John Stumpf led the charge of the Wall Street criminals in trying to stop Richmond’s efforts by suing the city the week after Richmond announced its policy. Just last week over 200 of you also called Stumpf’s office to tell him to stop suing and start negotiating.
Another thing that’s impressive is how important this support is in fighting back against Wall Street’s bullying of cities like Richmond. The lawsuit isn’t just about stopping Richmond, it’s about stopping ANY city from trying this common sense solution to fixing what Wall Street broke. The more people standing up the more likely we are to win! Can you help find more fighters by forwarding the Stand with Richmond petition with 5 friends? http://www.homedefendersleague.org/stand_with_richmond_ca You can also share it on Facebook here or on Twitter here.

You can also share this great Facebook graphic that the Home Defenders League created about the LPR fight between Richmond and the criminal bankers led by Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf (it’s the one in the picture at the top of the email).
This campaign is really heating up because there’s finally a way to fix what Wall Street broke and it doesn’t have anything to do with coddling Wall Street criminals; its main priority is keeping struggling families in their homes. Naturally, Wall Street bankers are desperate to stop it. If you want to stay up-to-date on these fights, the HDL has set up a special section of their website with information, updates, and ways to take action: http://www.homedefendersleague.org/local_principal_reduction
Thanks for standing up and fighting back in support of Local Principal Reduction!

In Solidarity,
Brian Kettenring, Executive Director, Action for the Common Good

Pledge to slay your energy vampires

Help power a billion more Acts of Green

A Billion Acts of Green® has been a huge success. We are now well on our way to collecting two billion Acts of Green. Thank you for all your contributions!

Over the next several months, we will be unveiling new actions to help you reduce your carbon footprint and live more sustainably. Stay tuned each month for new ideas about how you can make a difference!earthdaylogo

Today, we are proud to introduce our first action of the series: Slaying Vampire Energy. Even when appliances are turned off, they still consume electricity, called “Vampire Energy.” Each year, vampire energy is estimated to cost US consumers $11 billion. Since the majority of electricity is produced by fossil fuel power plants, vampire energy is also responsible for millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year!

Fortunately, there are several easy steps we can take to cut down on vampire energy. Unplug appliances and chargers when they are not in use, plug appliances into power strips, which can be easily turned on and off with one button, or replace old appliances with energy efficient models.

Make the pledge to reduce the amount of electricity wasted in your home today! Tell your friends! And be sure to engage with us on Twitter: #ActOfGreen. Together, we will form an active network of people striving to live more sustainably.
