That’s why we just installed a brand new chatroom on our website. We envision this chatroom to be a safe, judgement-free space where you can talk honestly and openly about your student loans with similarly-situated people who understand exactly what you’re dealing with.
The chatroom is open 24/7 for everyone to use, however; we also plan to use this space to have moderated chats on specific topics from time to time.
The topic of the first moderated chat is: The Consequences of Defaulting and How to Avoid That Fate, which will be held on Wednesday, September 18th at 6pm EDT (3pm PDT). Please mark your calendars accordingly.

 Ingrid, an Avaaz member, helped save a Norwegian woman from being jailed for being raped in Dubai — she started a petition on Avaaz and the social media storm it created kept pressure up on governments to act. Ingrid, an Avaaz member, has used our site to help save a Norwegian woman from being sent to jail for being raped!
Marte Dalelv was sexually assaulted while visiting Dubai, but when she reported it to the police, she was sentenced to 16 months in prison for “extra-marital sex”! When Ingrid read about Marte’s case, she started a petition on Avaaz calling on the Dubai and Norwegian governments to ensure Marte’s release. The petition and the Facebook page she created exploded on social media and people from all over the world signed the petition and flooded the two governments with messages at addresses that Ingrid posted on her Avaaz petition page.
Within days, Marte was released, and the Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide posted a Twitter message saying: “Marte is released! Thanks to everyone who signed up to help.”
Ingrid’s campaign was covered by major media outlets and clearly ramped up the diplomatic pressure to free Marte and bring her home to her family. And it all started with a simple step of starting a petition on the Avaaz community website. Impressive.
We’re getting reports from our partners in California that this is how the people fighting for Local Principal Reduction (LPR) in Richmond are describing all the support and media attention that’s been focused on them since that city started using that policy to move towards helping struggling families stay in their homes.
Thanks to the efforts of supporters like you, 20,000 people have signed on to support Local Principal Reduction and over 6500 have signed on to support Richmond, CA, efforts in particular. Activists at the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) and the Home Defenders League delivered those signatures directly to Wells Fargo branches the same week the Wells CEO, John Stumpf led the charge of the Wall Street criminals in trying to stop Richmond’s efforts by suing the city the week after Richmond announced its policy. Just last week over 200 of you also called Stumpf’s office to tell him to stop suing and start negotiating.
Another thing that’s impressive is how important this support is in fighting back against Wall Street’s bullying of cities like Richmond. The lawsuit isn’t just about stopping Richmond, it’s about stopping ANY city from trying this common sense solution to fixing what Wall Street broke. Even when appliances are turned off, they still consume electricity, called “Vampire Energy.” Each year, vampire energy is estimated to cost US consumers $11 billion. Since the majority of electricity is produced by fossil fuel power plants, vampire energy is also responsible for millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year!
Fortunately, there are several easy steps we can take to cut down on vampire energy. Unplug appliances and chargers when they are not in use, plug appliances into power strips, which can be easily turned on and off with one button, or replace old appliances with energy efficient models.
