Republicans are introducing and passing laws that make voting more difficult for everyone — especially for minorities, young voters,&seniors

DemocratsFriend —

Dorothy Cooper was born before women or African Americans in our country could exercise the right to vote. She grew up in a Jim Crow-divided South, and saw the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

Dorothy is 96 years old. In 70 years, she’s missed just one election. And she’s never had a problem voting — until this year.

Why? Because in more than 40 states, including Tennessee, where Dorothy lives, Republicans are introducing and passing laws that make voting more difficult for everyone — especially for minorities, young voters, and seniors.
We’re fighting back — and you can help. Please donate whatever you can to support Democrats and help fund the work we’re doing to beat back voter suppression efforts — one state legislature at a time.

I head up our voter protection team, and we have folks digging in on these suppression efforts every day. We’re spreading the word when new laws are introduced so we can be in a better position to fight them — and for those areas where laws have already been passed, we’re arming people with the information they need to make sure they can still vote on Election Day.

And we can win these fights:

Earlier this fall, thousands of folks in Ohio fought a GOP-led initiative to severely restrict early voting. They collected hundreds of thousands of signatures to enact a “citizens’ veto” and prevent the law from going into effect. As a result, more than 500,000 people were able to cast a ballot in the elections there this past November, and Ohio voters will be able to vote early in the 2012 election.
That’s not a victory for Democrats: It’s a victory for our democracy. Help support Democrats and our team’s work to beat back voter suppression.

GOP leaders have actually said themselves: They do better when fewer people show up to vote.

That’s why these efforts are no coincidence. They’re making voting more difficult, on purpose, and if enough people don’t step up, they’ll keep getting away with it.

Republicans’ suppression efforts go beyond the standard Democrat-versus-Republican back and forth. They are an affront to our democracy — plain and simple.

It is absolutely ridiculous that in Texas you can now vote with a gun license but not a student ID. Or that many of these GOP mandates exclude government-issued veterans ID cards, making it more difficult for our vets to vote.

Or that someone like Dorothy Cooper can show up at her local DMV with her birth certificate, voter registration card, and numerous other residency and identity documents and still be denied the state ID card that Republicans have said she needs in order to vote in her state.

But that is what is happening right now.

If that infuriates you, as it does so many other Americans who are learning more about these laws every day, there’s something you can do right now.
Help us keep up the fight by donating to support Democrats and the work we’re doing to push back on laws that keep people out, and double down on efforts to bring more people in:

Tune in to ABC’s 20/20 with Diane Sawyer tonight …Helene D. Gayle, CARE

CARECARE recently joined with ABC News and the United Nations Foundation in the Million Moms Challenge. This unique initiative engages millions of Americans with moms in poor countries around the world to connect — and act — on important issues, such as pregnancy, childbirth and children’s health.
Tonight, please tune in to ABC at 10:00 p.m. ET for a special edition of 20/20, “Making Life: A Risky Proposition.” Diane Sawyer will host an eye-opening report that sheds light on the challenges mothers face in developing countries. ABC talked to some of the women and girls CARE works with in Afghanistan, where we employ low-cost, low-tech solutions that can help save millions of lives.
We encourage you to share this e-mail with your friends on Facebook and Twitter or forward it to your friends. The more people we engage on this issue, the stronger our impact will be in helping mothers and their babies survive — and thrive.
Sincerely,
Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH President and CEO, CARE

The Climate Reality Project
I don’t know about you, but I get angry when I hear people claim that global warming isn’t real. We know that the science is clear and climate change is an urgent problem. And we need more people to learn the truth.

That’s why Al Gore has trained more than 3,000 people to give presentations about climate change. One of these people is my wife, Jayni. I’m so proud that she’s joined this group of dedicated volunteers who share the truth about climate change and explain why the deniers are wrong.

But these volunteers can’t do it without your help. This holiday season, will you donate $3 to help Presenters share the truth about climate change all over the world? Your contribution will make a big difference.

http://forms.climaterealityproject.org/donate2011

These volunteers give presentations in schools, community centers, businesses and places of worship. They help people learn about the science of climate change and how we can solve this crisis. The work they do is vital — we need more people to understand the urgency of this issue so we can demand solutions from our leaders.

This fall, The Climate Reality Project has received more than 2,000 requests for presentations, from 91 countries and all 50 U.S. states. In the next few months, hundreds of thousands of people are likely to see a climate presentation. The Climate Presenters are up to the challenge. It’s an exciting opportunity — but we need your help too.

It costs an average of $17 to fund a presentation. That’s based on the travel costs for volunteers who give presentations away from their homes. With only a small contribution, you can help Climate Presenters tell the truth about climate change all over the world.

This is work that’s deeply important to both my wife and me. I’d be grateful if you could do your part and help Climate Presenters succeed.
Help Climate Presenters explain why the deniers are wrong. Donate $3 to help let people know that climate change is a real and urgent crisis.

Thanks for all you do,
Chevy Chase
PS. Donate before December 31 at midnight to take advantage of your contribution being deductible as a charitable contribution in 2011 for United States federal income tax purposes.
