Rainforest Action Network

With Earth Day only a couple of weeks away, many of us are taking a moment to reflect upon the state of the planet. Let’s see here: nuclear meltdown, continued drilling in the Gulf, ever shrinking forests all over the world. Ugh. We can’t deny it looks pretty depressing.

That’s why, when the going gets tough on the environment, the tough get actors…and Girl Scouts! That’s right. Entertainers and intrepid young activists can be just the inspiration we need during the darkest of times. Sometimes you gotta go big. Enjoy.

Mountaintop Removal: An American Tragedy

With the generous help of actress Susan Sarandon, RAN is issuing a major wake up call about mountaintop removal for everyone still unaware of its tragic effects. Please watch and share this incredible video with everyone in your life who may not yet know about what’s happening in Appalachia. Born To Be Wild 3D

Morgan Freeman narrates the uplifting tale of orphan baby orangutans on their journey from ravaged forests, to rehabilitation, and back into the wild. Shot in breathtaking IMAX 3D, Born To Be Wild takes you right into the heart of Indonesia’s rainforests with Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas and a cast of incredibly charming creatures that even the most cynical curmudgeons (even those at Cargill) will not be able to resist.

You Be the Judge

Chevron has found a U.S. federal judge who is a little too willing to help the company launch counter-attacks against Ecuadoreans suing Chevron for environmental and cultural damages in the Amazon. Let CEO John Watson know that shady and abusive legal tactics won’t change the facts that Chevron is guilty.

Assault on the EPA …Kathleen Rogers, Earth Day Network

The Environmental Protection Agency is under attack. As early as today, the House is scheduled to vote on a bill that would strip the EPA of its life-saving ability to regulate the greenhouse gases that are cooking our planet.

Sponsored by Rep. Fred Upton, this bill is a free pass for polluters and would allow them to fill our skies with limitless carbon emissions. Upton’s bill poses a serious danger to public health and to our economy. Yet, amazingly this legislation is almost certain to pass in the House.

We need to act now before this bill hits the floor tomorrow. Join us today and let Congress know we stand united against this radical legislation.

URGENT: tell your member of Congress to reject Rep. Upton’s bill and VOTE NO on HR 910!              http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=BpGLHXyxRgWd6V4loTjGQaVCDO5Dx%2BX0

The EPA’s stance on greenhouse gases is critical to improving our economy, safeguarding national security and maintaining public health. Undercutting the EPA’s regulatory power is not the way forward. Our future lies in a new green economy, powered by clean energy innovation.

Please contact your member of Congress today to oppose any efforts to restrict the EPA’s ability to regulate pollution, protect the health of the American people and build a new green economy. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=3H4q9tUxVISnQ1QV%2F%2FuD%2FaVCDO5Dx%2BX0

Thank you for taking action,

Our Purpose … a message from kathleen Rogers

climate deniers in the House worked long hours loading a spending bill with amendments to weaken the EPA, block regulation of mountaintop removal, and stymie the federal climate research program. Even scarier, the bill was passed.

Clearly, the political winds are changing. So is our climate, and the reckless antics of Congress speak to the need for broad-based action to defend our environment.

Ironically, the House just gave us a perfect lead-in to Earth Day 2011. This year, Earth Day is themed after A Billion Acts of Green – our campaign to generate acts of environmental service and promote Earth Day events worldwide. Our goal is to reach a Billion Acts by the Rio Earth Summit: an environmental statement no one could ignore. Especially the climate deniers in Washington.

We need you to get involved! Join A Billion Acts of Green in honor of Earth Day 2011: organize a local event or pledge an Act of Green – starting with a phone call to your members of Congress demanding that they stop threatening to block the EPA.

Billion Acts of Green is our strategy to make Earth Day 2011 a success on the ground. We created a new community-powered website filled with ideas for simple things you can do to make a difference. We created easy-to-follow guidebooks for event organizers. Getting involved is easy or multifaceted: it’s really your choice.

Already, Our community has generated over forty-five million acts, but we need your contribution to take Billion Acts of Green to the next level.

Join us today – register an event or pledge an Act of Green on our website. Together, we will build the largest environmental service and advocacy project in the world.

Thank you for taking action, we can’t wait to credit your Acts of Green.

P.S. You can also do your part by supporting The Canopy Project. For every dollar you donate, we will plant a tree in one of many areas where they are needed most. Each tree you plant is an Act of Green!

Trees are life … from Earth Day Network

Let’s forget about carbon for one day and focus on a simple fact: trees are life. Over a billion people living in extreme poverty rely on forests to survive. They need trees to provide food, shelter, fuel, and to preserve the very fabric of their culture.

Think of Haiti. Its people rely heavily on local forests. But harsh economic realities have forced forest management to take a backseat to survival. The result: rampant deforestation, leading to devastating landslides, erosion, and floods.

Scenarios like Haitian deforestation are calls to action – it’s our duty to answer them. And we have. Using sustainable agroforestry, we planted 500,000 new trees last year to combat centuries of environmental degradation and bring life-sustaining fruit to Haitian communities.

Much work is left to be done. Frankly, we cannot do it alone. Thus, we created the Canopy Project – a people-powered campaign designed to plant a new tree for every dollar our supporters give. Let’s get to work! Will you help us plant 10,000 new trees by March 31st?

www.democracyinaction.org

Please join the Canopy Project and defend forests where they are threatened most. We will plant a new tree for every dollar you give.

Our tree programs have brought over a million new trees to life in forests and communities around the world. We’ve enhanced thousands of lives. With your help, we can do so much more.

Maybe you can’t travel to Haiti or Mexico to plant trees, but you can still stop the decline in forests worldwide. For just one dollar, plant a tree! Contribute $50 or more to receive a t-shirt as a token of our appreciation.

Help us reach our goal of 10,000 new trees by March 31. Give to the Canopy Project and fight the global threat of deforestation.

Thank you for your amazing support! Who says you need to get your hands dirty to make a real difference?

What Happened in Cancun

We just returned from the UN climate change conference in Cancún. At best, the results are mixed.

The good news is that over 190 countries agreed on aid to the world’s poor who are coping with climate change impacts such as malaria, drought, and extreme weather. These leaders also agreed on programs that promote clean technology and rainforest conservation.

The bad news is that we still don’t have a fair and effective solution to stop climate change. We are disappointed that world leaders don’t grasp the urgency of this crisis nor the opportunities that clean energy solutions provide.

We are still committed to building a new green economy. High-level negotiations continue to stall but we’re working with a new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs with the vision to build a sustainable global economy from the ground up.

COP16 was the stage for the official launch of Earth Day Network’s Women and the Green Economy (WAGE) initiative. In partnership with the U.N. Foundation, we are working with leaders like Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, to galvanize women entrepreneurs into a force that will green the global economy and advance climate solutions.

Do your part. Let’s show our leaders that we demand an ambitious treaty. Share your reaction to COP16 and show support for effective new agreements that can reduce pollution, stop climate change and save our planet!

Thank you for everything you do,

The Earth Day Network Team

P.S. With your help we can make Billion Acts of Green and Earth Day 2011 strong referendums on climate change and the need for a green economy. We have only a year until the next UN climate summit to galvanize the support of nations.
