“The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.”

  — Martin Luther King, Jr., The Purpose of Education

just another rant …
We all might agree that in an election year the most important thing most voters on the fence should be asking themselves is which politician running for office has been the most authentic, has not just your list of things in mind but that of your family, friends, co-workers and those who are now in need. We know the middle and lower class have been routed and that is on the list of targets the Party of NO has as a mission. I ask you to stop and think about what President Obama has tried to do or has done for ALL Americans not just for a select few like we have seen coming from the Republican Party. The choice for President2012 in my opinion is obvious. Yes, I will support Barack Obama for a 2nd term but it is not because I am a person of colour though I admit no one not one Teapublican person opposing President Obama has minorities in mind; we are all a second thought a group of invisible people who as newt says need paychecks not food stamps and or entitlements. Well, some may know this now since he forced it upon us, but there are more Caucasian people on food stamps than African Americans and or people of colour. if you are a Woman, the war waged against us by Teapublicans has become personal for me and given what this Party of No claims; to be for less government one must search for a codebook to find out exactly what that means and what is it they want from the middle and lower classes because it ain’t equality. I wonder, do they expect us to accept separate but equal. Whatever It is; it is utterly apparent that “these people” feel, act, or negotiate nothing like our parents conservative politicians and here’s hoping We the People do not have to experience what they all have been jabbering about because it does not sound sane efficient or address what all Americans need to move into the 21st Century. I watch, listen, and wonder what kind of education these conservative Teapublican candidates for President have received or have they just become more jaded more narrow minded, as they got older as they appear. I think a President must be willing to fight for the rights of everyone especially for those in need. I still cannot and probably will not forget what Eric cantor and Santorum said to women about health care. It definitely made me realize why I vote for the Democratic Party more often than not. I am no expert and I do not play one or pretend to be one; I just have a lot to say or rant about. In my need to reach out to those who may still be wondering who should be our next President. I ask them to compare and contrast President Obama against the Teapublicans who claim to want to “restore America”“, take back our country”, or insist on if they do get into the WH, that all Americans will conform to their “Family Values” platform. After hearing what they do not want to do for “We the People”, please think about family friend’s co-workers or neighbors who will be negatively affected by this type of attitude and the consequences of such a way of thinking and or living.

Food Day: Let’s transform the American diet …Earth Day Network

We here at Earth Day Network know all about special dates. After all, the first Earth Day in 1970 is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Today Earth Day is observed in 192 countries and is the largest secular modern day holiday in the world. Now we’re seeking to help promote another special date on the calendar, one that is equally as important–Food Day.

Food Day is October 24, 2011 – Learn how you can participate

Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life-parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes-to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. We will work with people around the country to create thousands of events in homes, schools, churches, farmers markets, city halls, and state capitals.

Food Day seeks to transform the American diet. It is about time that we all started eating real. Right now there are far too many people eating diets composed of salty, overly processed packaged foods clad in cardboard and plastic; high-calorie sugary drinks that pack on pounds and rot teeth, but have no nutritional benefit; and fast-food meals made of white bread, fatty grain-fed factory-farmed meat and French fries.

We want to get Americans cooking real food for their families again. We want fewer people at drive-thrus and bigger crowds at farmers’ markets. We want to celebrate fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy whole grains-and to support the local farms and farmers that produce them. Food produced in a sustainable manner helps to keep pesticides and other toxics out of our water and ecosystems. When you buy food locally you also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation of non-local food sources.

We are committed to:Reduce diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods
Support sustainable farms & limit subsidies to big agribusiness
Expand access to food and alleviate hunger
Protect the environment & animals by reforming factory farms
Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids
Support fair conditions for food and farm workers
We welcome you to join us in celebrating Food Day by hosting or attending an event. Transforming our diet is a big step in transforming the way we live so that we may be better stewards of the earth.

Sincerely,
The Earth Day Network Team

With Earth Day only a couple of weeks away, many of us are taking a moment to reflect upon the state of the planet. Let’s see here: nuclear meltdown, continued drilling in the Gulf, ever shrinking forests all over the world. Ugh. We can’t deny it looks pretty depressing.

That’s why, when the going gets tough on the environment, the tough get actors…and Girl Scouts! That’s right. Entertainers and intrepid young activists can be just the inspiration we need during the darkest of times. Sometimes you gotta go big. Enjoy.

You Be the Judge

Chevron has found a U.S. federal judge who is a little too willing to help the company launch counter-attacks against Ecuadoreans suing Chevron for environmental and cultural damages in the Amazon. Let CEO John Watson know that shady and abusive legal tactics won’t change the facts that Chevron is guilty.

Assault on the EPA …Kathleen Rogers, Earth Day Network

The Environmental Protection Agency is under attack. As early as today, the House is scheduled to vote on a bill that would strip the EPA of its life-saving ability to regulate the greenhouse gases that are cooking our planet.

Sponsored by Rep. Fred Upton, this bill is a free pass for polluters and would allow them to fill our skies with limitless carbon emissions. Upton’s bill poses a serious danger to public health and to our economy. Yet, amazingly this legislation is almost certain to pass in the House.

We need to act now before this bill hits the floor tomorrow. Join us today and let Congress know we stand united against this radical legislation.

URGENT: tell your member of Congress to reject Rep. Upton’s bill and VOTE NO on HR 910!              http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=BpGLHXyxRgWd6V4loTjGQaVCDO5Dx%2BX0

The EPA’s stance on greenhouse gases is critical to improving our economy, safeguarding national security and maintaining public health. Undercutting the EPA’s regulatory power is not the way forward. Our future lies in a new green economy, powered by clean energy innovation.

Please contact your member of Congress today to oppose any efforts to restrict the EPA’s ability to regulate pollution, protect the health of the American people and build a new green economy. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=3H4q9tUxVISnQ1QV%2F%2FuD%2FaVCDO5Dx%2BX0

Thank you for taking action,

Our Purpose … a message from kathleen Rogers

climate deniers in the House worked long hours loading a spending bill with amendments to weaken the EPA, block regulation of mountaintop removal, and stymie the federal climate research program. Even scarier, the bill was passed.

Clearly, the political winds are changing. So is our climate, and the reckless antics of Congress speak to the need for broad-based action to defend our environment.

Ironically, the House just gave us a perfect lead-in to Earth Day 2011. This year, Earth Day is themed after A Billion Acts of Green – our campaign to generate acts of environmental service and promote Earth Day events worldwide. Our goal is to reach a Billion Acts by the Rio Earth Summit: an environmental statement no one could ignore. Especially the climate deniers in Washington.

We need you to get involved! Join A Billion Acts of Green in honor of Earth Day 2011: organize a local event or pledge an Act of Green – starting with a phone call to your members of Congress demanding that they stop threatening to block the EPA.

Billion Acts of Green is our strategy to make Earth Day 2011 a success on the ground. We created a new community-powered website filled with ideas for simple things you can do to make a difference. We created easy-to-follow guidebooks for event organizers. Getting involved is easy or multifaceted: it’s really your choice.

Already, Our community has generated over forty-five million acts, but we need your contribution to take Billion Acts of Green to the next level.

Join us today – register an event or pledge an Act of Green on our website. Together, we will build the largest environmental service and advocacy project in the world.

Thank you for taking action, we can’t wait to credit your Acts of Green.

Kathleen Rogers

President, Earth Day Network

P.S. You can also do your part by supporting The Canopy Project. For every dollar you donate, we will plant a tree in one of many areas where they are needed most. Each tree you plant is an Act of Green!
