What’s the world coming to when we’re telling little girls that Minnie Mouse is too fat? Believe it or not, that’s exactly what the department store Barney’s is doing.

For a holiday window display, Barney’s and Disney have agreed to showcase Minnie Mouse wearing a designer dress — and distorted so she looks like she’s 5’11” and size 0.

I work with kids who have eating disorders, so I’m not exaggerating when I say the message this sends is deadly. According to one study, hospitalization for children younger than 12 with eating disorders went up 119% from 1999 to 2006. Younger than 12.

I don’t think Barney’s and Disney should be telling little girls that Minnie Mouse needs to be skinnier, so I started a petition on Change.org asking them to cancel this window display. Click here to add your name.

Studies warn again and again of the dangers of promoting an unrealistic body image. 81% of 10-year-old girls say they’re afraid of being fat, and 47% of girls in 5th-12th grade say they want to be thinner because of the pictures they see in magazines.

There is nothing wrong with tall, thin women. There is something wrong with changing a beloved children’s character’s body so that it looks good in a dress that almost nobody looks good in.

Earlier this year, Seventeen magazine agreed to stop photoshopping all models after 75,000 people signed a petition asking them to do so on Change.org. I know that if enough people sign my petition, we can convince Barney’s and Disney not to distort Minnie Mouse to make her look tall and skinny.

Schoolhouse Rock- How a Bill Becomes a Law

a message from Alan Grayson

Member of Congress?

Members of Congress can claim expertise in two things: getting elected, and getting re-elected. But they legislate on everything that the Constitution allows. So you have lawyers and businessmen conducting hearings on space exploration, lawyers and businessmen drafting legislation on mining, lawyers and businessmen voting on foreign policy resolutions.

Wouldn’t it be nice to support a candidate for Congress who is a true expert in something other than campaigning? Well, you can; his name is Dr. Lee Rogers, in California’s 25th Congressional district.

Dr. Rogers is a podiatrist and an award-winning medical researcher. He runs the Amputation Prevention Center in Los Angeles, and he teaches medicine. He pioneered a new protocol for diabetes patients that reduced amputations by 72%.

If you want to see a person like that in Congress, click here.

Back in the 1990s, I worked with someone who had a severe case of diabetes. I watched his health deteriorate over the years. The circulation in his legs weakened to the point where a foot was amputated.

It was terrible.

But if my friend were alive today, Dr. Rogers probably could save that foot.

Healthcare is now one-sixth of the US economy. Imagine how good it would be to have someone in Congress who knows it so well.

A doctor who would be in a position to improve healthcare in America? What a concept!

I’m happy that Dr. Rogers is a solid progressive. I’m happy that a Rogers victory means the defeat of Buck McKeon, who has been called the most corrupt Member of Congress. But I’m especially happy that Dr. Rogers knows something about something – a quality that Congress sorely needs. For the good of Congress, and our health, I’d like to see Dr. Lee Rogers in Congress.

California is holding its “jungle primary” next Tuesday, where Democrats and Republicans are lumped together. To have a chance against Dirty Buck in November, Dr. Rogers has to do well on June 5. Please show your support.

Courage,

Alan Grayson

Prevent Southern Utah From Becoming a Coal Wasteland!

care2 petitionsite actionAlert

A 3,500 acre coal mine next to Utah‘s pristine Bryce Canyon National Park? Such a horrible idea.We were successful in sending tens of thousands of messages opposing the Bryce Canyon coal mine. Now, it’s up to Secretary Salazar to make the final decision, and we need to put serious pressure on him to reject this horrible plan.

Bryce Canyon is known for its delicate red rock formations and abundant flora and fauna. Don’t let Bryce Canyon National Park and southern Utah become a wasteland! »

Also as a result of the mine, the park, the state’s tourism, and the health of local residents would be put at considerable risk.

It would make much more sense for Los Angeles to make use of its Southern California sun and instead look into creating its own solar energy.
