New Jersey Becomes 10th State to Pass Paid Sick Time!

Last week, New Jersey passed the Earned Sick and Safe Days Act. Once it is signed by the Governor, New Jersey will be the tenth state in the U.S. to guarantee workers the right to paid sick time. Nearly all New Jersey employers will be subject to the law, regardless of size. Workers will be able to use earned sick time to care for themselves or a family member—defined broadly to include chosen family members—for “safe time” purposes related to domestic and sexual violence, and to attend meetings at their child’s school or meetings concerning care provided to their children.
This tremendous victory is the fruition of years of advocacy work ABB has been part of starting with the first of 12 local sick time laws passed in the state as part of a long-term strategy to pass a statewide law. Congratulations to our partners in the New Jersey Time to Care Coalition and New Jersey Working Families, and to workers across New Jersey!

Good News from Tennessee!

Right now Tennessee state employees who have a new baby or adopt a child may only use 30 accrued sick days for maternity or paternity leave because of a statutory cap. That means that even if they have more days saved up, they are not allowed to use them. With the near unanimous passage of a bill (HB 2590 by Rep. Powell; SB 2379 by Sen. Yarbro) earlier this week, employees can now use up to 12 weeks of sick time and vacation time as well. Although we will not rest until all employees–both in the public and private sectors–in the Volunteer State have access to paid family leave without having to rely on accrued paid time off, we recognize this important step forward toward ensuring no one has to choose between caring for a new baby and critical income to keep their family afloat. ABB worked on the bill with our partners at the TN State Employees Association and Healthy & Free TN, among others.

#TeresaTuesdays – 4 in 4, Advancing Energy Conservation, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights Update, and more!

Thanks to your support, we passed (and the Mayor has signed!) four big pieces of legislation in just four months that will positively impact our community, workers and the environment.
  • We put a moratorium on rent-bidding sites, like e-Bay for rental housing, because we want to make sure these platforms conform with our city laws around fair housing.
  • We made sure that all workers are treated fairly and banned the use of sub-minimum wages for workers with disAbilities, because all work has dignity and all workers deserve respect.
  • We helped to ensure greater energy efficiency in Seattle buildings. By allowing contracts of up to seven years for energy rebates associated with energy conservation efforts, we continue to move toward 100% clean energy usage for City Light customers.
  • By utilizing Energy Efficiency as a Service and Metered Energy Efficiency Transactions (currently in use at the Bullitt Center), we’re incentivizing more green buildings, built with good labor standards. As part of the 2030 Challenge, this will help ensure that new buildings and existing buildings meet carbon-neutral goals to protect our environment for generations to come.

Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights Listening Sessions Kickoff!

On Saturday, April 7th, our team, joined by Council Central Staff, staff from the Mayor’s Office and the Offices of Councilmember Herbold and Councilmember González, held our first of four community listening sessions on what you would like to see as part of the Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights.  We heard from nannies, house-cleaners, employers and advocates about workplace harassment, discrimination, subminimum wages, lack of training, healthcare, retirement and more.  Thank you to all who attended.  Next up, we’ll be meeting this Saturday, April 21st at 1pm at Seattle Central College – we want to hear your voice.  Click here to RSVP!
